Yes, there were some people touting the Upstate and the Lower State should be proud. However, all three Championship games were extremely competitive with two going into overtime. Also, this is the first time since 1991,when the SCHSL began sanctioning soccer, that the Upstate has been shut out.
My advice would be don't crow too loudly until you have won multiple titles like Riverside, Eastside, Mauldin, etc.
The Lower part of the state especially the Charleston area is going to do well for the next few years. Why? Because of the number of talented club players that attend high schools in the Charleston area. Once you get past the GFC U-17 team, all the State Challenge Cup winners are from the Charleston area. This makes a big difference in how well they do in high school. The classic teams in the Upstate are not nearly as strong as a few years ago when the Upstate had all the girls Challenge Cup Champions. This depletion of talent at the club level has made the state more balanced and competitive. This will probably continue for a few years and then it will shift again.
Enjoy the ride, but remember it is much tougher to maintain excellence, than it is to achieve it.
