Not to belabour the obvious, but I'd like to salute the West Ashley Wildcats' climb to the top of the heap in the AAAA division. These girls matured as a team over the course of the year and followed the sage advice "if you must lose, lose early and lose infrequently." They marched through their bracket as perpetual underdogs suffering the extreme indignity of the Wando coach's back-handed compliment ("Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good") before going on to besting Summerville (for the third time this season) and finally beating Mauldin and their 4 All State players in Columbia for the title of AAAA State Champs. The team has a tremendous core of talented freshmen who double as members of Andy Grist's CGSA Fusion (currently ranked 10th nationally in U 16 classic soccer) and should provide a lot of interesting soccer over the next few years. Opposing opinions welcomed.
