West Ashley played Berkley. Summerville played Colleton County. Stratford played Goose Creek. Ashley Hall played Pinewood Prep. And on the boys' side Fort D played Colleton County. Clearly more rain fell east of the Cooper than elsewhere in the low country. No, I think Ferguson, when he can, will control every controlable aspect of a game, and his team, more so than some, is subject to seeing their style of play degraded by a wet field.
I really do have a dislike for Mount Pleasant and try as I might I haven't been able to overcome it. First, most of the people who live there are prettier, on average, than those of us who don't. Straighter teeth, better tans, less wrinkles. They drive nicer cars, too. Many have moved beyond the hand clapping stage of evolution to the black plastic hand clapper stage, thus saving wear or skin and bones. Mount Pleasant discovered soccer as a girls' sport about a generation ahead of the rest of the low country and there has been a persistant rumor that some Mount Pleasant mayors have, in the past, brought about arranged marriages of athletic MP couples to produce a genetically superior player. (I present this only as unsubstantiated rumor). Then there were all those years of listening to the cowbell... Of course Coach Ferguson's quote after Wando's loss to West Ashley in last year's playoffs did little to endear his program to me -- "Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good and tonight West Ashley was lucky". Anyway, there should be some good soccer this week... Do you know when they will squeeze in the Wando-JI make up?
