Colleton County 0 @ West Asley 3

An uninspired effort by the Wild Cats. One really pretty goal by Danielle Jordan. WA had best bring a different game Wednesday night or their post season could be very short.

RNE 5 Hartsville 0, Hartsville's goalie played a super game and kept the score from being much more than it was. Any word on Summerville / Stratford??

2nd round games will require the best from every team. Most of 1st round games were lopsided.

Seeing that Wando - FD Score Brought Back Memories.......

....of the worst girls' high school soccer game that I ever attended. It was my Junior Year. My group of friends were close with some of the girls on the team, so we would make many of their playoff games. Wando was 20-something and 0 at this point. They were #1 in state and playing Fort Dorchester in the first round of the state playoffs. The final score was 23-0, but all I remember was the 23rd goal.

Not only were all the 2nd teamers in, but the 2nd team offensive players were plaing defensive positions and the 2nd team defenders were up front. Some girl who was playing fullback (although she was really a forward) cracked a shot from just on the Fort Dorchester side of midlfield. It was hit so hard and so accurately that FD's goalie had to attempt to save it, or it would have gone in. Unfortunately for her, the ball had more juice on it that she expected and went through her hands and cracked her in the head. Poor girl is lying their on the ground as the 23rd goal was chipped in by a second team fullback turned forward.

We await many more reminiscences as Wando travels through the playoffs. Can they make it past DF?

I really don't know much about the girls team. I keep up with the guys team because a very good buddy of mine who won three state titles as player at Wando is now coaching with them as an assistant. I just had some good friends on the '94 and '95 state championship girls teams at Wando. We tried to support them when we could. Girls high school soccer was/is a great game.

A freshman from Wando came in to Newberry College to play soccer as I was finishing up my career. He graduated in 98 and was named Brian. Can't think of his last name...real short guy. Any clues?

wando95 --

As an only slightly related aside, trying to hold a score down by subbing in the second string of a really good team against a really weak team seems doomed to be counterproductive. The second string front is always hungry to score and generally very talented. If, by chance the coach then puts the defenders (and starting goalie) up top then everybody cheers them on, since they almost never get to play those positions. Everybody likes to put the ball in the net.

Very true, as represented by last WA - Berkeley game. FT D actually put up a good effort against Wando for about the first 20 minutes.

Playing weaker teams in the early round of the playoffs is a waste of time and counter productive to a team trying to go all the way. I know if i played for a weaker team why would i want to drive 2 hours (on a school bus) to get killed. Just look at some of these scores in the first round, i do not know what the solution is but what does it tell the kids about the game when a coach packs it in the back and hopes for the best.

first thought is to reduce to 3 team per Region but that still doesn't address problem that some areas just aren't soccer rich areas. Same goes for other sports. High School regions are set up for travel budgets so I expect that not much is going to change. I don't see many 4 seeds beating 1 seeds in basketball, softball, baseball, etc so maybe they could reduce it to fewer teams.

We are headed towards High School Ethics here shortly. Shortening the brackets would then have to be across the board (basketball, football, baseball, etc...) Not too mention informing little Susie she has to miss out on one more game in her career because no one wants to see Soccerprogramjustgettingstarted High School obliterated in the first round. Besides, teams split the gate at these games, thus improving (even if slightly) their facilities. Athletic Directors are looking for any type of revenue to pay for the financial drain some programs may be (see half of the high school girl's programs in state). And if all of these still do not sway you to reconsider, think of Hoosiers, the Bad News Bears, Jimmy Valvano, Gonzaga, the US World Cup squad, and even the Taco Bell dog if it helps. Sometimes we have to throw common sense and logic out the window for a feel good story every once in a while. Thank you and have a good night...

Conway lost 8-0 to Dutch Fork. However, even in World cup, there are unmatched first round games. How else would new teams get the experience to push them to the next of several levels. Conway is a very young team, and this experience will be priceless to them in the up and coming years. I hope your arrogant comments about how it hurt Dutch Fork to play this game isn't felt by their players. If so, maybe they should declare a bye for the first three rounds and see how sharp they will be in later rounds. I personally don't like the first game back from a bye in any sport.

Summerville has some talented players, Shaw, Embler, Wright, Catapano, Brady and a few others, strong goalkeeper as well, i think that West Ashley's speed will be too much for Summerville, West Ashley has to contain Taryna Shaw because if she gets forward it can cause some problems. This game will be played on the bigger West Ashley field Friday night @ 7:00pm.
West Ashley's defence is yet to give up a goal in the play offs. Should be another good one.
