S-Burg 2 Greenville 2
T.L. Hanna 5 D.W. Daniel 0
Daniel's best player went down in a previous scrimmage and only sported 11 players to Hanna's enormous squad of 13. Thanks be to basketball and gimpy knees for the large Yellow Jacket Squad. The first 20 minutes were fairly even but the possession game tired the Lady Lions and they eventually conceeded three goals before the half. An ankle inury took Daniel down to 10 players before the young lady dug deep and found the fortitude to return several minutes later. Despite the emotional surge of her ensuing return, T.L. was able to sneak two more goals past the athletic and aggressive home team to finish the game up 5-0.

Dutch Fork 5 Brookland-Cayce 1
The B-C Bearcats could only field 10 varsity players last night. I don't know what was up with that. Several upper classmen were missing. I don't know if they quit, were injured or had other commitments. I don't think they all play basketball.

So did Dutch Fork play with 10 as well? That would tell us what kind of coach this new guy is.

This "new guy" is not new at all. Bo Sylvia has been coaching soccer for more than 20 years, in SC (Hilton Head) and elsewhere. He's been honored as a Coach of the Year in 3 different states. He's already making a difference in the DF Women's Soccer program. As for the game last night, B-C supplemented their roster with a few JVs, as did DF.

What would tell us about him? It is a scrimmage. You play them to prepare for the season. If one team has 6 then I would still play with 11. You're trying to evaluate players, develop tactics, build depth. Terrible comment.

A little testy are we? Too many expressos in the cafeteria at lunch? What if the other team only showed up with one player and that was a baby who couldn't even walk yet... would you endanger the life of a helpless infant by putting eleven fully developed players in cleats on the field with her? Huh?

If you can't field a damn team, why schedule scrimmages in the first place? There is plenty of time between Taco Cup and the start of the regular season to get a few scrimmages in. Know your team. Know who plays basketball. Know who is committed to classic cup tournaments.
No sympathy here.

What type of baby would this be? Would it be the "giant baby" recently produced? The unamed baby that was thrown from a moving car window after the two parents got in an argument? Either of these two resiliant babies would stand a chance against our injury plagued squad. If it was a regular baby then I would obviously show mercy and have my back up keeper play as opposed to a regular field player. What kind of jerk do you think I am.
Slightly testy at the barb against the coach's character. I think FoxFan picked up on it as well. Nobody questions 2-time state champion coaches so you just wouldn't understand.

Lapf, is 700 the magic number until your posting career officially come to an end? If so, I would feel terrible, devastated even, to have so many wasted on a bitter old man life myself. Allow my anger, rage, and lack of morals to pass by you like a thief in the night and go on living the thoughtful and considerate life.

Thanks for the details on the babies. I kind of wondered about the one thrown from the car but never shy away from a miracle when one presents itself. No, 700 is not the magic number. At the sound of 1000 my carriage turns into a pumpkin. So little time, so many people and programs to offend. I'm dedicated to driveing my star rating down to 2 before the clock strikes 12. Like Edward Abbey, I sit and contemplate my novel...

Your question is old school. Since the formation of CESA (elite being the key word) there is no longer any question about domination in the lowcountry or your beloved midlands. The Borg went 8 out of 8, after all. Only the upstate can be elite -- it's in their name, not ours or yours. We are all lucky to be allowed to participate on the same fields at the same time as the upstate teams. The SCHSL should save money by canceling the spring season and just give the trophies to whoever CESA says is best in the Piedmont.

Glad to hear about Wando. They lost a lot of talent last year, but then East of the Cooper Soccer has always seemed more team driven than individual player driven. And you always predict Wando weakness against JI and WA. If I'm not mistaken, Wando beat JI three times last year and finished off WA's three peat hopes in the lower state final before anihilating Mauldin for the state title. Caternacci (sp?) who scored a hat trick in the state final game didn't graduate, did she?

As for the Dutch Fork game, 3 players were with basketball, the returning All-State sweeper has an ACL injury, and the left back(All-Area) has a broken leg. There may have been more absences, but those I know were out.

Irmo looking pretty impressive in their low country swing. Let's see if they can sustain it at Taco.
Spartanburg 2, Northwestern 1. Good result for the Lady Trojans, I thought S'burg would be considerably stronger.

The Sat. afternoon scrimmage between Irmo and West Ashley JV and Varsity was a great idea. Both teams have a lot of young players on JV who are going to keep the programs going strong. Final on the JV was WA 2 Irmo 1. The varsity match was going to be interesting with WA missing about 6 of their squad including their goalie. The team that took the field did a great job, but Irmo didn't allow any goals. Irmo has an incredible keeper and she was challenged. A lot of good defensive plays by Irmo also. Yep, the Taco Bell tourney will be fun to watch.

One last note on the Irmo v. West Ashley scrimmage. I don't think irmo is getting credit for saturday's 0-0 draw. Yes, the starting keeper wasn't there, but since irmo didn't score i'm guessing that never came into play. Secondly, WA's tactics probably looked a lot like how they will play all year. Play the ball long out of the back, bypass the midfield and get the ball to julie bolt and alexus brothers to combine with each other. Those 2 players were there and they combined really well at times. I think irmo's defense is potentially a force to be reckoned with in the state. As dennis miller says, "That's just my opinion, I could be wrong." Good luck to everyone as they head into the viking cup this weekend.

I was sorry I had to miss the WA - Irmo scrimmage but did hear that Bolt and Brothers played well together. WA, like most teams while basketball season is still in effect, is playing with less than their full starting squad. I will be surprised if their chief offensive strategy is long ball to the forwards when the full lineup is present. Best of luck to Irmo, at least 'til playoffs...

Agreed. I do not think the results of the Viking Cup are even close. That would be a very interesting side-by-side comparison over the last 3-4 years.
A lot of people make way too much of the preseason. Look at the NFL. The top four teams in the NFL finished last in the preseason. Heck, even us Carolina Football fans can get excited about the preseason.

And Chapin actually beat Mauldin in the Tournament, but lost to Ridgeview. And if I remember correctly everyone was already planning DF and Spartanburg crowning after the Viking Cup. Two hours later trying to figure out how to tab on this site.

One thing for sure, if you go 0-3 and you are a 4A team, it's tough to recover.
I noticed that Wando's girls basketball team did not qualify for the state playoffs. This should guarantee that we see a representative Wando squad unless they have girls tied up in club tournaments.
Does anyone know if they will be fielding their "A Team"?

An interesting thought is how most competitive girls teams have at least one player they are waiting for from the basketball team. I don't recall very many boys teams waiting for players.

If the girls basketball team is eliminated in the first round, the player becomes eligible for Viking Cup. It's just a question of how much rust still remains. Fitness shouldn't be a question, unless she's riding the bench and not working real hard in practice (I've seen that happen).

Maybe somebody could petition the SCHSL to move girls' basketball to the Fall. That way BB junkies could have almost year round roundball between the girls and the boys and the damnable soccer to BB talent drain would stop.

lap,
God forbid we add a real competitive girls sport to the fall season, that could put a serious hurt on cheerleading....the only sport that matters because they exist to support the Effballers.
Anybody south of the Mason-Dixon (excluding PRIVATE schools ever hear of field hockey?).
Unbelievable that we jam soccer, softball and track into the same season while there ain't much happening for the ladies in the fall (v-ball).

Some additional thoughts on these last few posts:
For the past 2 years, DF has played in the Championship Game of the Viking Cup. Then, at the end of both seasons they lost in the early rounds of the playoffs. DF has no starting soccer players who also play basketball. Seems to me that they get a little bit of a head start and then everyone else catches up. Given a choice, I think they'd prefer to peak at the end of the season, not the beginning. Still, the Viking Cup is a good barometer of where you are and what you need to work on. Its a great pre-season tournament with excellent competition.

No doubt that one of the prime reasons why Fort Mill finished in the Final 4 last year was because of the great experience they got in the Viking Cup. It jump-started the season, the 0-0 draw with West Ashley was tremendous.

The first league games usually start the following week. While annoying for some teams this is really just a scrimmage, and allows some players a chance to play in some big games before the full season starts up.
If lexington would just lose more in BB then you wouldn't have to worry about it.

Wouldn't you love to see all 24 of these teams come together in mid-season form and battle it out to see who is #1? Out of JI, WA and Wando, only one team reaches the state final...this is an opportunity for two of the three to declare that they are clearly the best in the state. Plus you have 3A and 2A involved, so Eastside and Riverside get to take their best shot at laying claim too.

In recent year the Rebel Invitational has picked up steam as a quality midseason tourney as well as B-C's. Maybe one of these two will rise up to take the lead as "The Midseason Tournament". Until then its Burritos and JI vs WA vs Wa...uh I mean state playoffs.

Aiken not offended by the jest. R1C is a former South Aiken player just playing around. Specifically, picking at me. It was meant in good fun. Look forward to coaching against R1C again sometime and "all is lost from the start.." was somewhat prophetic with our 0-3 result; however, we will take more positive out of the tournament than negative. We lost to 3 fine teams. Good luck to all & please everyone ignore R1C as much as possible.
And on a much better note, Congratulations to crosstown rival South Aiken that has won something like 16 out of their last 18 (since the beginning of last season) under Coach Bridget Dutcher. I think everyone has still not spent enough time talking about their achievements and only one of their fine players' names has even been mentioned on this site. The scouts better be out at South Aiken's games soon b/c if you aren't, you will have the fate of almost all of South Aiken's opponents.
Coach R Johnson, proud to coach the 0-3 Aiken High School fighting green hornets

Defner, your coach and I go way back and have many similarities from colleges to favorite former Spartanburg coaches. I hope you'll put on some thicker skin before you read my next post.
As for you R Johnson, I don't see how you could ever listen to a word I say as I have twice been on the wrong side of a "whoopin" from the mighty Green Hornets. Email me that NA bit just as quick as you can.
