Anybody needs some info on the much anticipated BHP Tournament I will be your play-by-play broadcaster. I promise to leave no match unturned as title implications appear to be on the line.

I plan to try and get out there around 5:15 today. I really want to watch both of the early games. I want to see Dreher because they are in our region and I want to see DF because of personnal interests. I am so torn. Luckly for me they are on fields next to eachother.

R!C --

I'm waiting anxiously for the Taco Bears report. In my day (late third quarter of last century) BHP was better known for tennis and golf than soccer. Has this changed?

Lapf, the Bear faithful have but one laurel to rest their hope, pride, and economy on and this is football. The gamble paid off as they took home state this year. Due to this event, the megapolis of Anderson was littered with early model chevy trucks with fat women and four kids hollering "How 'bout 'em Bears" at every stop light. Thanks to quick action by the city council, an ordinance banning the phrase was quickly passed.

With all pointless rambling aside, T.L. Hanna is not entering in this tournament, however crosstown juggernaut Westside is. I support Anderson Soccer and my close friend, Coach Roseberry, therefore will update the world on the ongoings. The Lady Jackets square off against Gilbert High School and White Knoll in the 2nd Annual T.L. Hanna Invitational next weekend. I fully expect a pm about the Taco Smell Tourney and how those dear to you have been doing. I, in turn, will give you the exclusive season outlook of Radio High and update you on the Electric City's latest.

I believe the score from the other 6:30 game was: Ridge View 2, Chapin 0.

I was watching the RV/Chapin game a bit while keeping an eye on the Lexington/BC game - which was a downright thriller with 4 goals being scored in the last 10 or so minutes. Unfortunately for BC, three of them were scored by Lexington. The game ALMOST made me forget it was still basketball season - it was that exciting!!!

I was very impressed with Brookland-Cayce. Lexington was very fortunate to pull out a game that BC seemed to have a good handle on. Unless the Bearcats were playing way above their heads, they are going to be a tough out for whoever they play.

Here's what I saw/remember (to the best of my ability, which may not be saying much):

Marshall (Campbell)
Marshall (Otto)
Campbell (PK, Bigbie Fouled)
Moon (Campbell)

That looks right. It was a great shot by Moon in the final minutes from about 25 yards out to the far post upper 90, keeper had no chance. This was a very good game between 2 teams which the core players of both teams have been going at each other from about U11 till now in club ball. I don't understand how Dutch Fork beat BC by as many as they did earlier (5-1) execpt that it's still early and the pre-season. None the less a very even, well played game by both teams.

OK....I'll go out on a limb. Four games have been played, and neither of these two teams have participated yet. They both debut tonight.

James Island and Fort Mill to meet in the final.

LF,

In the DF win over B-C, the Bearcats were without a number of players. I don't know why. The team that DF played that night was wearing the B-C uniforms, but it was not the same team that faced Lexington last night.

Spartanburg 3, Wando 1

I heard that Wando had the better of play, hard to tell from the final score. FM & S'burg are both 1-0 and in the same group, but they don't play eachother. S'burg probably has the easier route with BC and Irmo remaining. FM has Lex and Wando. They both could run the table but I see Irmo giving S'burg a tough match.

Deahl,

You had told me that lex would be short-handed this weekend. How strong was BC Thursday night? I suspect Wando will give FM a great match. It will be FM's second game of the morning and Wando's first.

BC looked awful good to me! I felt like Lexington was very fortunate to win that one. I haven't seen Wando yet this year. However, I can't remember a year when they actually had anything less than strong team.

Not looking good for Fort Mill. After a nice 4-0 8:00 AM win over Lex, they had to come right back at 11:30 to play a Wando team that spent the entire morning resting comfortably in their hotel rooms. Can't really make too many excuses, FM had their chances and should have finished. 0-0 after regulation and Wando knocks in the golden goal in the first OT.

FM needs serious help from Irmo and BC if they are to advance. i watched these two teams play the match prior to FM-Wando. BC has a lot of heart and is a real nice 3A team. They were down 0-1 but forced OT and won it on a nice goal. Irmo looked uninspired and was not very created offensively. I hope they get their act together and give S'burg a game.

Also saw a real exciting match between Chapin and West Florence. WFlo went up 2-nil but Chapin fought back. 3-3 after regulation and Chapin pulls it out in OT. Fun game to watch.

Do you believe in miracles????......Yes!!!!!!

Did I call Irmo uninspired and not creative?? Shame on me! I love IRMO!

After another unbelievable result - Lex beating Wando (how? FM beat Lex 4-0, Wando beat FM 1-0....Lex beats Wando???).....the only way S'burg can advance is with a 3-0 win over Irmo. Irmo scores.....and FM is now on to the semi!

Thanks also to BC, who had a great run with a 3-2 win over S'burg and a 2-1 win over Irmo....both in OT! BC and FM both finish 2-1 but FM advances on points. S'burg can still finish 2-1, but they can't catch FM.

The Group of Death was everything we anticipated!

Lets not forget Lex beat BC 4-3 in regulation to also go 2-1. One has to wonder what might have happened if Lex had it's 4 missing starters for today's 2 games. Overall a very good effort and showing by Lex in a very talented grouping. This should be a fun season for Lex. Maybe we will see FM again in the playoffs............. [Big Grin]

My thoughts over the weekend:

James Island, what can I say. They are the best team I have seem in a long time. Their touch on the ball was stellar. Their first touch was just amazing. I have not seen WA but I will assume they are just as good. I now understand why everyone thinks it is a fight been those two schools for state.

Chapin is improving a lot and are already showing a lot of heart. They where down 2-0 againist West Florence but never lost heart. Chapin scored a few minutes before the half. Chapin then scored again in 2nd half to tie things up. West Florence didn't take long before they scored again to go up 3-2. Chapin could have fell apart but Chapin came back to tie it up with about 5 minutes left in the game. Chapin then scored the winning goal about 4 minutes into overtime.

Againist JI, Chapin was down 6-0 in the first half. The ladies could have given up but the decided to startover in the second half and held JI scoreless. I was very proud of the ladies. If was their second game and JI's first game.

Have a nice night..

Did Spartanburg beat Irmo? If so Group C had four teams at the top at 2-1-0.

FM 2-1
BC 2-1
S'burg 2-1
Lex 2-1
Wando 1-2
Irmo 0-3

Good point LF, it would be nice to see you at full strength. Lex has some good, young players.

A quick take on Wando, WA, and JI from my observations this tourny so far (Saturday night). WA is a team of great potential looking for its buddhist center. Shayna Lee, returning after a year out for ACL surgery and freshman, Calie Purvis, have strengthened their back line. Lexis Brothers and Bolt played well together and the team awaits Danielle Jordan's post BB arrival on the scene. Wando, at least as I saw it in the Wando - Fort Mill game, has a long way to go to re-enter the race as a repeat contender to hold their state championship crown. The Wando-Fort Mill game had all the finesse of a mud wrestling match, with Fort Mill looking the better of the two teams to me, despite their overtime loss. James Island... Well, JI looked like a mature team of journeymen soccer players who knew exactly what they were supposed to do and did it. A solid, mid to late season look from a team in preseason. Times and tides change and we are only in act one of this three act play, but beware the Trojans of JI, they are tired of being the lowcountry bridesmaid...

Congratulations Irmo. Way to get up off the mat after being 0-2-0 and down 0-1 to S'burg.

FM-Wando was exactly as you described it lap, nice to see that we were actually watching the same game. If the refs would have cracked down sooner, we may have seen a more attractive game. I;m sure both sides are capable of putting on a skillful show.

I'm off to Columbia, let's see how it goes this morning.

Semis:
James Island 1, Mauldin 0

Didn't see much of it because most of my attention was on the other game. I know JI also hit a post and played most of the game without Elyse Clarke who had a moster game (4 goals) against Chapin the day before. Lacey Moskos did a nice job filling in for her and JI survived the Lady Mavs.

Fort Mill 3, Eastside 2

Eastside looked tremendous and took a 2-0 lead into halftime. FM was on their heels and reeling. Eastside has a ton of skill and speed and played a tremendous 35 minutes. Unfortunately for them, the match is 70 minutes long and FM reached down and gutted it out. They got the game winner with about 5 minutes to play on a header.

Final:
Fort Mill 1, James Island 0 (OT)

Great game by two teams that were feeling the effects of a long weekend and their second game of the day. Got a little sloppy at the end as both teams seemed content to wait for the other to make a mistake. Golden goal was scored by Freshman forward (#4) Ashleigh Sheets five minutes into the first OT. FM defensive center midfielder Melanie Blaschke(#12) was named the Viking Cup senior MVP.

Another great job by Spring Valley hosting this fine tournament.

Congrats Fort Mill.....never say die!

FM v JI --

Fort Mill is to be congratulated on staying focused and in the game in both the semis (down 2-0 at half) and the championship match overtime victory (1-0). JI dominated the first 25 minutes of the first 35 minute half spending 75% of the playing time on the FM side of the field. But Fort Mill settled into a more balanced attack in the last 10 minutes of the first half. The second half showed excellent technical play from both teams with players that were clearly showing the effects of 5 games in less than 48 hrs. In the end, I think FM found the only way to score against JI -- over the heads of the defensive back line. Again, congratulations to a resilient and talented Fort Mill team and best of luck against your Region and upstate competition.

Tournament scoring was based on a point system, rather than wins and losses. (Ex: Win=6 pts; Shutout=1 point; Goal Differential=1 point each, up to 3) James Island emerged to the semifinals as the Group B representative by scoring more points in their 2 wins than South Aiken did in their 3. It was very close, but essentially, JI had more lopsided wins than SA.

By finishing second, does taht mean James Island has side stepped the Taco Curse? No Taco Bell 4-A champion has ever gone on to win state the same year, I think. Maybe the same in 3A.

JI advanced to the finals because they had 27 points to SA 26 points.

SA Points scored as follows:
Beat West Florence 7-0 (10 total Pts. Max)
6 Pts for win
3 Pts for max 3 goal diff
1 Pt. for shutout

Beat Ridge View 4-2 (8 Pts)
6 for win
2 for goal diff.

Beat Riverside 1-0 (8 Pts)
6 for win
1 Goal diff
1 Shut out

JI (From memory if I am correct)
Beat Riverside 2-1 (7 Pts)
6 for win
1 Goal Diff

Beat Chapin 6-0 (10 Pts)
6 for win
3 for goal diff
1 for shutout

Beat West Florence 5-0 (10 Pts)
6 for win
3 for goal diff
1 for shutout

More lopsided? Maybe but I wouldn't put Chapin in the same league as Ridge View so the tougher road to the finals was for SA. I would venture to guess that JI rested some players in their game against West Flo since it was 3-0 in the first 15 minutes (third party info). Considering both teams played Riverside and won with a 1 goal margin, one could argue they are pretty close. Who knows! We'll see in May! Good luck to all teams!

It pretty much sucks that SA was undefeated in the Taco Tourney yet the rules made it so that they could not advance(should have been head to head play if anything to advance)....I would have gotten up early this morning to see the T-breds fight it out with the "best" of the teams left.

Well, soccerdfner16 you'll get your chance! It's called the State Playoffs.

Anyone who claims South Aiken as the only team left that was undefeated is misrepresenting the facts. Mauldin, Eastside, James Island and RNE (tie not a loss) were all undefeated (just like South Aiken) after group play finished on Saturday evening (FoxFan got it wrong - JI had 3 wins, not 2, in group play). South Aiken read the tournament scoring rules just like everyone else - they knew what they were up against. The "rules" didn't keep SA out of the semis. The fact that they didn't score enough points did (soccerdfner16, SA/JI didn't play head to head). Wando beat Fort Mill, who beat Lexington, who beat Wando. Who gets to the semis? Easy, the scoring rules were sent to all of the coaches well before play began, and published in the tournament program for the fans to see. Nobody was surprised by the semifinalists! If you don't believe me ask all of the Fort Mill coaches, players and fans gathered around the Irmo/Spartanburg game hoping Irmo would score. The FM folks knew exactly what had to happen for them to get in to the Semis. They didn't even stick around to see who won that game!

I found it interesting that the only team in the semis with a loss (Fort Mill) - won it all! Also of note, they came from Group C, which many were proclaiming the "group of death", or whatever. By the way FoxFan, your analysis on another thread for placement determining toughness breaks down when you consider that points were accumulated, hence placement (except for those in the semis), by playing those in your group only. Having watched most of the games in Group C, I will tell you that with the exception of the Fort Mill/Lexington game, they were all very exciting contests. Brookland-Cayce takes the cake on exciting by playing in TWO overtime games and a 4-3 match that saw FOUR goals scored in the last ten minutes. Don't stop at a drugstore in West Columbia if you are looking for antacid. Also of note from Group C, while it was the only group with no team emerging undefeated, it was also the only group in which everyone got at least one win. Six solid soccer squads (say that three times fast).

What does all of this mean? I agree with FoxFan's comment on the aforementioned thread, "It means the regular season starts in a week and we can finally discuss real results from real games. Thanks for playing."

Good analysis Deahler.

In last year's Viking Cup, Fort Mill and West Ashley were both 2-0 going into their final game against eachother. Game ended 0-0 and WA advanced by one point. FM knew what they needed to do going into that game but couldn't get it done.

I sympathize with South Aiken this year, shame they didn't get their shot head-to-head. I also feel Brookland-Cayce can make a case. They finished 2-1 in the Group of Death, tied with Fort Mill, but never got a shot at FM head-to-head. That's the way it goes.

BC, Eastside and Riverside were all tremendous 3A representatives.

The whining about South Aiken not making it through is not coming from within the SA camp. We knew what we needed to do in each of our games to keep up with JI, and simply didn't get it done. You do have to acknowledge some level of disappointment that SA and JI didn't play head to head, and their scores were similar against common opponents. There was some 'luck of the draw' involved, but such is life. JI looked very tough, and certainly deserved to go through. The bottom line is that every team was thoroghly challenged, and it was a great warm-up for the regular season. Kudos to SV for a great tourney!

a fan,

Don't worry, everyone knows where the whining is coming from; and everyone knows it's not the SA camp!!!

What has happened to Dreher? No goals scored in three games at the Taco Bell Tournament? Can someone explain?

I try and be careful about saying anything negative on these boards because it almost always comes back 10 fold.

Dreher looked very young and scared at times. They never seemed to link more than one pass at a time and even that was rare in the game I watched. The girls never switched the field of play and always seemed to want to play the ball straight up field into pressure. They would play with their heads down and wanted to always do a one-touch kick. They have some extremely talented girls on the team and knowing the coaching of teams of the past, I imagine these things will be corrected as the season matures. I am sure Dreher will be fine once the season starts.

Chapindad,

I thought the Chapin vs. West Florence match was the most exciting of the tournament. Back and forth, end-to-end non-stop action.
