When was the last time in 4A girls that a #1 seed fell in the first round to a #4 seed?

It looked like a possibility for this year until I took a look at the brackets. We all know that the #4 seed out of Region 5 will be very competitive (RNE, DF or RV). Unfortunately, their first-round match will be at the #1 seed from Region 7. Do either of these three teams have a shot at beating Wa, WA or JI in Round 1 of the state playoffs?

Two years ago #4 Fort Mill (who finished behind SV, RV & NW) went to Lexington in the first round. FM had a 2-1 lead with less than two minutes remaining before Lex converted a free kick. Lex then won it in OT.

Any other 1 v 4 close calls or upsets?

I think all three teams match up pretty well with that division, but must be playing at the top of their game to pull it off.

I anticipate RV haiving the best chance to pull it off but NOT BY MUCH Over DF OR RNE. Though I would pick DF as having the next best chance. I pick these two teams over RNE primarily because they have better defenses and better defensive play all around that RNE. RNE though is dangerous especially if their forward is on, because when she is and the rest of the team is playing at a high level, the team is definitely one of the top in the state.

I think it's unfortunate the way the brackets came out. The Region 5 #4 seed would have a great shot at most #1's....but not Region 7's.

It does make it a tough "row to hoe" so to speak, but I do not think it is as far out of reach as it may seem. Players from RNE and RV have played with and are familiar with players from region seven and they always play those teams tough, I am not real familiar with DF Players so am not sure how they would fair. Physically though RV matches up the best with DF next......

But I do agree with you........ it is unfortunate because I think either of these three teams could knock off other regional #1 seeds.

The closest thing to an actual upset was in 2000 when #5 seeded Dorman lost to #12 seeded Hillcrest 5-0. This was back in the dark ages of first round byes, non region strength of schedule, and long playoff weeks. Region 7 #4 almost pulled off the clean sheet with JI, WA, and Wa in the 1st round.

Is Region 7's #4 team any good? Can they play with Irmo?

Last year they could have. "Strad-fuhd" apparently has graduated a bit of talent from last year's squad. Their scores don't seem to be as competitive, but I still would not want to play that battle tested group.

Maybe it's not too late to change the playoff brackets for this year. It could be a whole lot of fun if every one of the 32 teams involved got to pick the team they'd most like to play and play them. I know a lot of you are thinking that most everybody would jump on the "I want a #4 seed from a weak region" approach to the first round, but I bet there are lots of teams who would like to get outside the Region X always plays Region Y first round match ups. I say, open the whole thing up and see what happens. There's a full week before the first games. Surely that's enough time to put some color into this old painting.

How old is this painting? The canvas constantly changes for us up here. Three years ago we were in a region that included Spartanburg, Dorman & Byrnes. Past two years we had Spring Valley & Ridge View. This year and next we got Gaffney and York. In 2007, it's possibly an All-York County region as we get Clover and South Pointe (new HS in Rock Hill).

I guess we have moved regions and that's why we have seen different first-round opponents (South Aiken, Lexington, Boiling Springs).

Irmo will destroy the #4 from Region VII!

The region match-ups for the playoffs do not stay the same from year to year. This year's match-ups are: 1v3, 2v4, 5v7, 6v8. Last year the match-ups were: 1v4, 2v3, 5v8, 6v7. In 2003 they were: 1v2, 3v4, 5v6, 7v8. In 2002 and 2001 I believe they were seeded in the Upper and Lower State respectively without regard to Regions (kind of like the other football).

As for upsets this year, I think that the highest likelihood of #4/#1 upset is in the Region IV #1/Region II #4 game. Byrnes, Hillcrest and Dorman seem to be playing their best soccer of the year. Dorman was ranked in the top ten (maybe even top five?) at the beginning of the year (somebody thinks they have some talent), and could end up being the #4 coming out of Region II.

**NOTE TO ALL OF MY SOUTH AIKEN AND LEXINGTON FRIENDS**

I am not saying that this upset will happen, only that when compared to the other #1v#4 match-ups, it has the highest likelihood of happening. As a recovering instigator, I needed to make this last comment...
