In a moderate to light drizzle on a very slick pitch West Ashley outscored James Island 3-1 to knot Region 7 records of the two schools and cross river rival Wando. The two goal margin is misleading and if anything James Island looked the more assertive of the two teams on the field for the bulk of play. Their usual sniperlike passing was disrupted more by the wet field than was the game of West Ashley. WA scored first at 9 minutes into play off a corner kick that went into and off of the JI keep bounced around a bit and was passed out to Julie Bolt by the heads up play of Denise Abate. Bolt pushed a hard ground shot through the crowded box and past the keeper. At 28 minutes Lisa Frawley tied the game on a shot to the left side wall of the goal after positioning herself almost unguarded in the box and receiving a beautiful crossing pass. 1-1 at half.

Play in the second half was physical but clean. WA's second goal was scored by Alexis Brothers on a long pass over the JI midfield to the left of the box. JI's keep came out but Brother pushed a soft shot past the remaining defensive back and the out of position keep to the net. With about 8 minutes remaining WA scored its final goal off a direct kick by Danielle Jordan from about 35 yards out. The ball was aided by a 15 mph wind and sailed over the JI goalie's outstretched hands. This kick was the result of a foul that many thought to have been called on a hard but clean slide tackle. 3-1.

James Island had a number of hard shots on goal that didn't find their way in, particularly notable were two or three short range blistering shots by Frawley early in the match. JI did not give up at any point, though its play might have been aided by resting the starters a bit down the stretch. WA keep Alechia Brothers had an excellent game and may well have been the difference in tonight's performance.

On a dry field this game might well have tilted in James Island's favor early on, and as it was the game was a virtual draw in my overall impression. JI has the best team play in the state and very dangerous forwards. Tonight Coach McNeely showed that the right players in the right places at the right time can win against one of the best teams in the state. If we are lucky we will get to see these two teams play again in route to the Lower State championship. That will be a game to remember.

i strongly disagree, but hey i might just be blind. i dont understand how a 3-1 victory can translate into a "virtual draw". both WA and JI played on the same field, and if it was supposively the weather that lowered JI's level of play, why didn't it effect WA equally? maybe its the education i've recieved west of the ashley, but i strongly doubt that the "conditions" of my education could effect an analysis that obvious.

lpaf,

Great post of game. I only disagree with one thing. The bald man in the middle was the main factor of the outcome rather than the weather. Bad calls = goals. He is the worse, no wait, second worse official I have witnessed in 11 years. Haven't I seen him coaching for a "West Ashley club team"? Ahhhh, now it all makes sense. Hold on for the ride and good luck to all during the playoffs.

Play was very even, believe me. The score could have easily been 2-2. WA deserves the victory and worked hard to earn it. It's the next encounters between W-WA-JI that count. Does anybody know what the seeding in R7 is? How about Region 5?

I didn't think the center ref made a tremendous amount of difference except in the third WA goal. At least as many calls were "wrong" against WA as against JI, to my eye. The third match up is the one that matters, and always has. I'll be proud to ride to Columbia as a Trojan or a Wildcat supporter on May 13th. Lots of soccer between now and then...

Lpaf,

Why not travel to Columbia as a Wando supporter? [Wink]

Wow - based on earlier predictions I was expecting a JI win.

Now for the season that counts! Go Region 7

How dare you try to bring the game into disrepute! If this was the FA you'd be fined 300,000 swiss franks.

Was the circle flowing the other way last year in terms of which R7 member swept which R7 member?

lpaf,

I'm sorry but I strongly disagree (which is unusual) with your view on the official. It was clear to most of us that he was making more calls WA's way and that resulted in goals and stopping momentum and I post this not because JI did not get the win. It is just sad and angers many to see such a bias official, anytime. And being the coach of the WA club U16 girls team for a couple years now makes it all the more clearer. WA outplayed JI in the end and deserved the win. The region 7 playoffs are looking to be very interesting.

ps - As an addendum, I thought the sportsmanship of a couple players on WA was 100% improved from the last time JI and WA met. :-)

James Island's loss comes down to several key factors:
1. Outstanding goalkeeping from Brothers.
2. JI mentally not prepared to win.
3. Tactical formation used throughout the game.
4. Taking starters out for too long.
5. Too many missed chances.

Congatulations to West Ashley on playing JI strong again. I hope the James Island coaching staff can see what improvements need to be made.

ss,

All of the above +

6. Center official was clearly partial to WA.

I hope the coaching staff can work it out and the players can get back on track. WA (and Wando) are not to be counted out as we all knew a long time ago. JI can do it, just have to want it more!

Regular season play in R7 over the last two years:

2004 W-WA-JI = Rock Paper Scissors

2005 W-WA-JI = Paper Rock Scissors

The only season that really counts starts next Monday.

2bz4u - We'll have to disagree on how important a part the center ref played in last night's game. I thought he missed as much in one direction as the other.

juat for public information, the center referee had players from his club team on both JI and WA. i checked the roster and a handful of names on BOTH teams belong to the CUSC u16 United roster as well. also for a little more info, the majority of the JI girls team plays for CUSC anyways, so the majority of them have probably interacted with this center official at any given time during their fall club seasons.

run97,

Your opinion....the game is over, WA won and JI lost - I am well aware of who the center ref was and where he coached and whom he has has coached. I am also very well aware of who he has interacted with on the club side! But no use in crying over spilled milk. Just hoping ALL teams, ALL over the state are treated fairly in the eyes of the officials. Would hate to see a team go down unfairly. Good luck to all next week!
