I admit that this one of the premier jobs in S.C. high school soccer and maybe the top job amongst girls teams. Who has interviewed for this "plum job"?

N,
This entire thread is dedicated to the anticipated arrival of the newly crowned King/Queen of Wando girls soccer. I am to believe that before the ink has dried we will know on this board. Until then we must wait...

I didn't think the international flavor was geared to me, but if it did...they aren't in "the know"! Think I'll try my luck with latin america next.
That job is a "plum, a peach, and a pear"...but not for me. You know I'd never leave T.L. Hanna...

"the deal is done"
But nobody's talking. Wando is so good, I think, that they don't really need a coach (maybe they never have). You just get all those rich, fit, soccer savy HS girls together with a ball and good things will inevitably happen. Forget it. We're not even intererested. Fort Mill is the future, West Ashley is the past. Wando, like Mauldin, is in soccer purgatory (one brilliant season notwithstanding).

The wheels, guardrail, the wheels. Fort Mill just needed tighter attachment so they wouldn't fall off at the 60th minute. H66 told us this would happen, he just thought it would happen to the wrong team.
Do you have any thoughts on the new Wando coach? Clues I see here are:
International man of mystery LPAF may know him better than he thinks, according to S! "Pert Plus" formerhscoach understands what "Pert Plus" means OPG doesn't (nor does anyone else posting) R!C.com says it's Jeebus S! ain't talking, but appears to know more than anyone else

From what I understand, interviews concluded almost two weeks ago.
I am curious as to why there has been no announcement made yet and why no one has posted and said, "i got the job". Even if the person does not know about this site, i would think s/he would know someone who they would have told and that person would know about this site and they would post who got the job.

From what I understand, quite a the list of "Who's Who" have been brought in for this interview. As long as they don't hire/announce anyone in the near future, this website will continue to entertain me over the summer. I say hold back from revealing the name until December. What else am I going to do?

How can teachers afford to live on Mt. Pleasant these days? I don't know what real estate sells for across the Ravenel Bridge, but it must be exorbitant these days.

I have heard that the former migrant farm worker camps on Johns Island and Wadmalaw Island have been leased by the the town of Mount Pleasant and are to be used for housing teachers and coaches who could not otherwise afford Mt P housing prices. Shuttles will move them across the new bridge or they can use their own cars if certain standards are met I'm told.

According to this article, Hilton Head Island is the second largest on the eastern seaboard. Are you referring to the land size or population? The State (8/18/03)As for Hilton Head Island, the second largest island on the Atlantic coast, with a population at the time of about 2,500, news of what had happened there was scarce or nonexistent in the early reports. Cola Fan is not far off from the truth. Wando has a couple of coaching vacancies right now and a big problem is finding affordable housing for the teachers/coaches who want to work there. Several coaches have left for jobs in Dorchester and Berkeley just because it is more affordable for them. Wando Booster Club 's main mission is to raise money to supplement the coaches' stipends allowed by Charleston County School Board.

add to the housing issue the fact that the AD wants his coaching staff teach AT THAT SCHOOL, the school is in the middle of no where, and the CCSD requires signed contracts by 3/15. That means that 3 months after contracts are signed (true the contracts are with the district but the district is very upset by late moves between schools) who ever takes the job is in the unenviable position of requesting a reassignment chnage from a district that discouranges them and doing so for non-academic reasons. I think this is going only more difficult to fill as time elapses.

Mount Desert Island of Maine is the third largest island on the Eastern seaboard after Long Island (N.Y.) and Martha's Vineyard (Mass.).
I don't know which island is bigger in South Carolina between James Island or John's Island.

Well, knowing Bob Hayes from a previous life, looks and appearance of the coach will be of the utmost concern. He is a very conservative person with strong family values, but isn't the easiest person to get along with.

Wow. Coach Champ will be an awesome addition to the Wando HS girls soccer program. She left the year before my daughter got to have her as a coach but I did get to watch her coach and she knows her game very well. I know a lot of Chapin girls wish she where still there...

She (Shannan Champ) introduced herself to my daughter from WA and her other WA player friends that are attending the Clemson Camp this week. She noticed the "We Did It The Hard Way Tour '05" t-shirts and said "This must be the West Ashley girls". She said she looked forward to the triple rivalry- WA, JI, and Wando.

FYI- the formal introduction of the Wando coach to some of the West Ashley players happened on June 19th and was "passed" on to the Charleston community that night.

I don't know for sure, but I bet that Vivip's comment is a reference to the fact that CSC (Coach Shannon Champ) wasn't actually a member of SCACA/SCHSSCA this past year and thus may have had a lesser voice than she could have had (had she actually been a member). Instead she was able to repeatedly criticize Coach Bennage of AM for failing to adequately promote one of her talented Waccamaw girls for 2A All State. I can't help but wonder if Coach Champ's house on Pawley's didn't have a phone in it... or maybe a cell phone or something so that she could (herself) have promoted her players to other coaches on the committee? Those barrier islands are isolated, I guess...

Believe me, from various reports that I've heard, the "remote islands" are not only restricted to Wando's new girls coach, but another prominent Charleston area girls coach as well.
At least that coach seems to have learned from his/her errors of the past however.

The "formal" introduction (word "formal" was just in joking) was a mere chance meeting at the Clemson camp. When we commented "so you are the mysterious new coach" she was surprised it was not made public. She was very nice and sincere and it just so happens she is the coach for the team the WA girls are on at the camp. They really like her and it sounds to me like Wando is very fortunate to have her.

oh by the way -
if this was such a big deal and a great find, why has there not been a press conference, news paper announcement, TV coverage etc.
If I collare a superstar coach don't I want to stage an event, during NS weekend for instance, and promote the daylights out of it?
The silence is deafening

This is high school. Not college or pros. I'm sure there will be something mentioned publicly in the Charleston paper soon announcing the new hires at all of the lowcountry schools.
Bob Hayes is a good A.D. and this sounds like a good fit for all. But, those are some big shoes to fill at Wando!

Coach Champ was 13-8 this past spring in her only season at Waccamaw HS. The Lady Warriors finished sixth in the Class 2A/1A Poll.
Before that stint, she was the coach at Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania (coincidentally, the alma mater of Clemson University men's soccer coach Trevor Adair).
In 2003, Champ's last season at LHU, the Lady Eagles finished 10-12-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference of NCAA Division 2. Lock Haven finished as Runners-Up in PSAC Tournament. In her first season at LHU in 2002, Champ guided the Lady Eagles to a 16-2-2 mark and undefeated 11-0-0 record in PSAC play, including a Semifinals appearance in the PSAC Tournament. The Lady Eagles dropped a 1-0 shootout decision to Adelphi in the NCAA Tournament.
At Chapin HS, Champ led her 2000 squad to an Upper State Championship in Class 2A/1A and she served as Co-Coach of the North team at that year's North-South Soccer Classic.

nothing on the Waccamaw site or Georgetown Schools site indicating she's leaving or that there is an opening either. Asst coach is open.

That would be your standard dozen. However, the sizing is metric and I never learnt that during my public school edumakation in the hills of east Tennessee. But I figure the size of a hen's #$%^ is also standard the world over.

SW --
The French may have a special way to measure the volumes of eggs, them having invented the metric system and using a different word for everything and all. But mostly eggs are just small, medium, large and jumbo, I think. At least that's how the Mepkin Abbey monks sell them in Moncks Corner.

So Coach Champ was at Chapin in 2000, LHU for 2002 and 2003, and Waccamaw for 2004? How long will she stay at Wando?

one and done? two and thru? three and free? four and no more?
back to my earlier question - if this is the done deal everyone thinks it is, why has there not been a parade and press conference complete with corronation?
Maybe Georgetown schools are wanting to high of a transfer fee?

GR22 is defintely not from Charleston area. Local papers are not going to make a big deal about any coaching change other than football.

I have to completely disagree with Swimmer. If Wando parents wanted the paper to run a small article about this or if they wanted a quick mention on the sports portion of the local news, they would make it happen. The parents at Wando are just that passionate about their soccer program and powerful.
If we were talking about any other school (with the exception of Bishop England), i would agree but not in this case.

newspapers will print anything - just look at what they print most every day.
Send them a press release and in some form it will make its way into the paper.
Like I said - the silence is deafening.
Keep in mind teacher contracts are signed in March and if this coach is coming the contract she signed has to be voided. If she just leaves she is in breach of contract, which she can be sued for.

The new coach will not be sued for a breach of contract.
I would be willing to make a very, very large wager on this if anyone cares to challenge me on this. The thought is borderline absurd in my opinion.
College of Charleston and Francis Marion are producing plenty of candidates to fill any role in that is vacated. If they can't, plenty of other universites such as but not limited to USC, USCA, USCS, Newberry, PC, Anderson College, Coker, and Lander can get the job done. I know personally Charleston County is still hiring and plenty of in field jobs will be open to the new coach. If not, she can go out of field with the PACE program.
Getting a bit silly now...

The point is simply one. Teachers are under contract. Contracts are signed in March or April. To get out of a contract requires agreement between both parties. If one party abdicates without permission of the other, thats breach of contract. In this case WHS has to grant permission to leave.
Its a bit funny to think that a student straight out of college is capable of being a head high school coach - even if it is Wacammaw HS. If nothing else, a teacher starts at $28,000 per year which means their entire salary has to go to their rent.
And oh by the way - if the newspaper won't run the story why is their nothing on either website.

Why was Coach Champ not at North-South and why has she not posted anything saying that she's signed at Wando and has moved to Charleston? She visits this message board b/c when she unfairly lambasted Coach Bennage from Academic Magnet, she had numerous posts attributed to her name.
Also, I would think that if you were the next coach at Wando that you would be telling anyone who would listen that you had gotten that position. Heck, I probably would have rented a road side billboard.
By the way, while it may not be considered "suing for breach of contract", Districts have had the State Dept. of Education suspend teachers' certificates for up to 5 years for breaking contracts. Being an uncertified teacher means finding another occupation. So the comment from GR22 is not absurd.

That's happened quite a bit in a lot of sports at the prep level. I don't know why you would think someone coming straight out of college would not be prepared to be a head coach, but would love for you to provide your opinion. I look forward to reading it.

I'm not totally sure on this point, but I believe former Coach Scott Ferguson maintained the website for the Wando HS girls program. From my understanding, he is retired from the program altogether, so I expect those duties will need to be picked up by someone currently involved with WHS girls soccer. Ferguson did an excellent job with the promotion of his program.

Its a bit off topic here but how many head soccer coaches are there in SC today who graduated from college last month? For that metter how many first year head coaches in SC Soccer graduated this time last year.
How many athletic directors in South Carolina would actually read the resume of a college graduate who applied for a head soccer coaching job and or acknowlege receiving it.
Close, personal, first hand, easy to reach out and touch experience for me says the answer to question two is ZERO. I suspect question one is the same.
Whether or not they come out of college preapred is a moot point. They don't because they don't get the detailed experiences of scheduling, logistics, eligibility, dealing with players, dealing with people, dealing with parents, driving the bus, and 10 or 12 other things they don't teach in college.

I came straight out of college and took the T.L. job. 17-5 last year.
Westside high school's coach came straight out of college and took the job. Most wins in history...leading scorer in state. I think certain individuals are ready based on the experiences from the passt i.e. YMCA coaching, high school-club-collegiate playing experience. Nothing prepares you, however, like the job itself.
Someone straight out of college didn't get the job so I do not know why we are arguing that point. The point is an experienced high school and head college coach got the job. Was this person the best candidate? I don't know. But she got it and I will let you dance on my grave if breach of contract is an issue. It is absurd to think a school would sue a teacher. Absolutely absurd.
Being that none of you are a part of Wando nor have any kids that attend the high school...might I ask for the board why it is such a big deal to you?

My only statement to this discussion is I've seen many a coach not get a job because the school district would not release them. It is each individual school districts course of action to take. Most work with you depending on the time of year, but no law states that they have to release you. You can have your license suspended.

Is this final and for sure? She seems to be a good coach and will probably do well with the amount of talent that passes through Wando.

The raw material at Wadno coaches itsefl, in spite of its coaches. Way too many bright, affulent girls well healed in good club soccer. Peice of cake for State in '06. Anything less and the new coach should be canned, whoever he or she mihgt be. There'll be lots of good appilcants again next year if thigns don't work out.

except for the fact that coach Hayes is looking for a long term permanet solution to this opening and there hasn't been a peep - perhaps.
If they could coach themselves they'd have played all 80 min against WAHS. No one is guranteed a title - its why they play the games instead of voting.

guardrail22,
I think our proudly dyslexic friend is trying to say the talent pool East of the Cooper is so strong that exactly which coach is located at the helm of the Lady Warriors may not be terribly important. And for what it's worth, Wando played three games against West Ashley this past season and all three games went to PK's. Both teams did a pretty good job of playing "all 80 min" plus some each time.

on the other hand if the AD can't handle something as basic as a newspaper article, what happens when the new coach really needs some help with something.

Yeah, I think there is way more news to publish about the world than the hiring of the Warriors new girls coach. Write an article next year when she accomplishes something. Don't get the big deal, but really if you want, I'll make some news up and use some hidden sources to verify(isn't that what most newspapers do anyways) and write you a great article!

GQ says she has the job but waited until after she got it to tell the school she was not moving the MT.P - she plans to commute each day.
Not exactly long term dedication. Road trip to Irmo will be brutal

I hate to dissapoint guardrail but the Charleston paper did have a small blurb in high school sports column this week about the hiring - right after 2 articles on high school football.
It is Shannon Champ.
