6. Brookland-Cayce Girls Soccer

The Brookland-Cayce girls soccer team won its first state Class 3A championship, and a lot of the credit goes to co-head coaches Ken Smith and Lauren Eudy.

Maybe some of that credit also belongs to a pair of players, senior Mallory Phillips and Christian Patton. Midlands girls soccer coaches voted the pair The State's All-Area Class 3A Co-Players of the Year.

"I wouldn't be surprised if you don't see her coaching one day," Eudy said of Phillips, who won the award last year. "She'd always come up to me and ask, 'What do you think about this?' It's kind of neat to see a player thinking from a coaching perspective."

Phillips wound up with 46 points, on 13 goals and 20 assists, but the fact that she had more assists than goals goes a long way in explaining her value to her team.

Patton was the player of the year in the region after scoring 28 goals. She also dished out 12 assists.
