futbolesvida,

I won't argue that being able to play a full 100 minutes of soccer without a break is one measure of fitness. I think, however, the James Island coach is missing the opportunity of both "fresh legs" and the benefit a brief rest can bring to the starting playes late in a game. How many times have you seen a starter who is rested for 6 or 8 minutes late in a game come back in and look faster and stronger for the final minutes? Not substituting is not a virtue, it's a weakness of coaching. Knowing when to rest your stars is an art. JI has competent subs on the bench, their new coach should make use of them, especially in tight games.

I thought girls' varsity games were 40 minute halves, not 45. 40 + 40 + 10 = 90, not 100. Is the 40 minute half only by region and other regions play 45?

FMD20,

You're right. 40 + 40 + 5 + 5 then pks. My mistake.

What do you think about not substituting at all during a game?

Substitution is heavily dependent on game conditions, bench depth, and flow.

So without knowing the whole scenario most people should not be able to comment.

I have seen it work both ways.

I was at that game and did think down the stretch the JI offense slowed a bit. Strategic substitutions are, in my opinion, a useful tool that can make the difference in a game.

I thought JI's sophmore Marisa Terry had a great game. She played up top in the first half but was moved to a defender in the second half and pretty much stopped penetration by Wando down her side of the field, driving everything to the outside. Ashley Mack also had a great game in defense for JI. A solid defender.

futbol(soccer),

I agree. But as a general rule resting a tiring starter for a few minutes seems to be solid strategy, provided the bench is adequate. Not considering substituting is nearsighted. I didn't see a single James Island sub get off the bench and warm up at any point.

Well a lot of teams have players that play the entire game, because most strong teams only have three or four subs that can be put in and not have a downfall in production. Its not like hockey where a complete line change can be done, that would be cool, but it can not happen. So in a close game, a lot of players do not get breaks. But the whole team not being subbed, that is impressive.
