You are correct in your assessment of ODP. It is not impressive. I do not remember who was held over last year in the 87 girls, but the following were held over for region pool in the 89s ( current u17) girls: Maggie Blackwell(CESA 88 Premier), Caroline Clark(CESA 88 Premier), Marisa Leconte(CESA 88 Premier). 90s holdover included: Kira Campbell (CESA 88 Premier) and Ellison Sharpe ( 89 CESA Premier). There was one CESA girl, Morgan Thomas I think, that was held over in the 91s (U15). I believe she went to national camp also. I do think that Lindsay Beam (GFC/CESA) and Julie Bolt were held over in the U19 age group.

In terms of picking the best 18 for the team, I think it depends on who comes out to tryout, and who wants to pay to play. My daughter's age group never had a big turnout and not all the top players came out. ODP was approximately $1000, when my daughter played. It's expensive, and the quality/amount of training depends on the assigned coach. Some years it was not good, some it was great!

To echo and elaborate on what "soccermom1121" said, here is the girls 2006 region pool selections from South Carolina. In addition, I've listed the players selected to play in the region pool qualifying games that didn't make region pool.

Girls, 86/87 Pool: Lindsey Beam [CESA], Danielle Jordan [CUSC]
Girls, 88 Pool: Hailey Beam [CESA]
Girls, 89 Pool: Maggie Blackwell [CESA], Caroline Clark [CESA], Marisa Leconte [CESA]
Girls, 90 Pool: Kira Campbell [CESA], Ellison Sharpe [CESA]
Girls, 91 Pool: Morgan Thomas [CESA]

Girls, 88 Pool Games: Shannon Bigbie [CESA]
Girls, 90 Pool Games: Hannah Gmerek [CESA]

No player made the region team. The only player to make the national team was Lindsey Beam.

Benp/soccermom1121: Re: South Carolina ODP "not impressive."

Everything is relative. Certainly making the SC ODP team is not as impressive as making the Texas ODP team, which in turn isn't as impressive as making region pool, which in turn isn't as impressive as making region team, which in turn isn't as impressive as making the national team.

But making the SC all-state team in a particular division is equally relative. Rather than put my own opinion out there, simply ask your favorite D1 coach how much weight they put on a high school all-state selection relative to ODP or club play.

How many SC D1 girls player can you name that didn't participate at least a year or more in ODP?

Finally, to what started all of this -- I've seen Dreher play only a couple of times -- but every time I've thought that Ellison Sharpe stood out. There was little to no offense that didn't start with something she did.

By the way -- I'm not associated with Dreher nor am I related to anyone on the team. I'm not sure what the motivations are of the various people talking about this -- but I think it's a shame when people associated with a team feel they have to put a player down to raise up their own favorites.

if thats referring to me chico i was not putting anyone down to raise a favorite, i dont have any favorites, if you look at my post i named at least 8 players who are good players. i was simply saying as you did that ellison is a stand out thats not a knock on anyone else. and my motivation is that i was asked by the girls to post on them since i usually just post on the guys.

dreherheckler: Wasn't referring to you -- I don't think saying someone is good is equivalent to saying everyone else is bad.

It means every year that people acknowledge (and rightfully so) that Fort Mill's (region) schedule is weak.

The past few seasons people have criticized The Mill for the lack of red on their schedule (ranked teams). That comment then sparks the "Great NC schools" that the team plays seeing how higher quality competition is not available locally in SC. Ask Hurst, he has had to endure this the past 2/3 seasons. I just watch in amusement every year as a new poster (like yourself) pops the question.
