A couple of surprising results in 4A. Can we get a game report out of somebody? Hasn't been much noise on these boards from Irmo and Dorman all season. Lex and Wando....give me your take.

LF, deahler and Chico,

I'd like to get your perspective, from the openning whistle to the post-game handshake.

Hurst66: Actually in no pain this morning at all; I'm proud of the Lexington team for getting into the final four when two years ago they were unranked and this year came into the season ranked #9. As I said all year, Lexington continues to be young...and their inexperience showed last night while Dorman did an excellent job. I think Lexington exceeded all expectations coming into this year -- and I believe that Lexington's coach should be considered for coach of the year given the unexpected excellent results of this team.

But in the last thread I told you why I didn't participate much in talking about teams -- and that thread was the actual embodiment of why I don't do it very often.

I'd like to nominate Fort Mill coach Jim Finnerty for COY. He wins with class, he loses with class. His 2005 team lost to WA in the state championship in what many people have said was the greatest girls high school game they have ever seen. His 2006 team lost at Lexington in the state quarterfinals in what many people say was the best high school girls game they saw all season.

H66,

When was the last time you remember me doing soccer game perspective. I’m just a “soccer dad” I leave that analysis to you "experts". Now if you want some perspective on a basketball game, I am happy to contribute.

Anyway, here is my take. The third straight "BIG GAME", mounting injuries and a great Dorman team on the other side of the field finally caught up to the Wildcats. While Lexington certainly did get the home field (whatever that is worth), the slate of teams was straight from HELL!!!

The Wildcats have played the Cavaliers three times in the last 13 months and have yet to play them with a healthy team. Not making excuses, Dorman showed up with what they had and played their game and won. It would be interesting though for Lexington to have all of its horses just one time for a game against Dorman. Oh well, not to be...kudos to Dorman on their victory.

GO IRMO!!!!!! (the NEW underdog)

deahler: Despite the fact that Lexington lost two starters, one a 2005 all-region player, in the games against Mauldin and FM that couldn't play last night and lost a third 2005 all-region player earlier in the season to an ACL that couldn't play last night, I thought that Dorman did an excellent job. Until Lexington can get consistent play on the outside [particularly like we saw the team do so well against Mauldin where the crosses were as nice as I've seen all season by any HS team], Dorman or any team with that level of talent is going to give Lexington fits, just as Dorman did the last two times the team played them.

Lexington will miss the two seniors graduating; but I believe that barring injuries, Lexington will be pretty tough next year.

Now you see why I don't do analysis for soccer games...Chico is spot on!!! I learn new things every game...

Normally I would pull for the Upper State team (which Irmo will be next year). However, our family has way too many friends on the Irmo side for me to pull against them in a game not against Lexington.

Things are more complicated where I live, so instead of teams sometimes we have to cheer for people. So go Coach Frederick and Rachel Wadsworth and Britney Horton and Kristen Werdunn [manager] from Irmo and go Carmen Osorio and Hannah Chapman and Nathalie Emplit and Alix Zongrone from Dorman!!! [And any others I missed.]

Chico is correct. The difference between the Dorman game and the Mauldin / FM game, especially the Mauldin game was the passing, or in lasts night case the lack of passing. Dorman did a very good job of passing the ball where Lex for the most part seemed to just be kicking the ball.
Here is the review from the paper, which is pretty accurate as well The State

I thought Dorman dominated the first half with Lex dominating the 2nd half as well as the 2 OT periods. As VERY poor call by the center ref provided the chance for the game winning goal. Refs were inconsistant. Calling it very close sometimes, and then not calling anything at others.

Dorman just seems to have Lexington's number. Hope we get another chance at them next year. GO IRMO !!

Unfortunately emotions are a prerquisite for state playoff games...

I only got to see the second half and the OT. All lex parents I spoke with said that Dorman was all over Lex in the first half. Lex definetely dominated the second and OT.

The referee appeared to let the teams decide the game in the second half and then mysteriously called everything in the OT (many questionable). I happened to know the center ref, and he has always done a good job. I would be curious to understand what he saw.

In any case, the player of the match for me was the Dorman girl that scored the goal. A pretty header to the far post. But not because of the goal.

The truth is that,in my opinion, she single handedly put Dorman in the finals because of one play in OT. The play was a classic counter in which lex was able to get the ball to midfield quickly. The ball was then passed on forward to a diagonal running Ms. Maupin who caught the defender flat. She flew towards the goal with the defender in hot pursuit. As the keeper came out, she "gave" the far post for what would be an easy tap in, as Ms. Maupin adjusted her body for placing the ball in the corner, the defender cleanly slid and tackled the ball for a corner.

Lex scores and the game is over, Dorman defender takes Maupin down and the game is over. The play was the play of the match for the time I was there.

Good luck in the finals.

I thought Dorman played the prettiest soccer I've seen all year -- there were almost no mistakes in their passing, they moved the ball all over the field and had very well organized attacks, drops, field changes. Dorman's defense did a nice job of taking penetrating passes away from Lexington, aided by less than stellar passing at times by the Wild Cats. I missed the first 20 minutes, but thought Dorman dominated the last 20 of the first half with lots of play in and around the Lexington box. 0-0 at the half.

A wicked shot from an undefended Cavalier forward 1 minute into the second half hit the left post and rolled back across the entire frame before it was cleared by a Lexington defender. I thought Lexington then did a nice job of applying offensive pressure over the next 20 or 25 minutes and took over the pace of the game. A number of balls played into the Dorman box were bogged down by the sheer number of defenders and forwards trying to occupy the same space.

Dorman was the more physical of the two teams and, to my eye, bigger on average. In my opinion, the center ref allowed an excessive amount of "take down" contact, which played to Dorman's advantage.

Play in the first OT was very even. 4 minutes into the second 10 minute OT period a lexington foul was called on contact that seemed minimal compared with the muggings we had seen all night. From about 30 or 35 yards out the Dorman player lofted the ball into the right side of the box and a player put a perfect head on it sending it soft, high and out of reach over the Lexington goalie. Lexington came back with 6 of the most intense minutes of offensive soccer I have seen -- a heroic effort to even the score, but too late. The game ended as Lexington was setting up for a corner, I believe.

It was a great night of soccer in the midlands. I particularly enjoyed watching the play of #13 for Lexington, a deceptively fast bulldog of a defender who frequently advanced the ball down the left side when overrun by Dorman. #3 for Lexington had a nice run at the left side of Dorman goal late in the game but the Cavalier goalie played her approach aggressively and blocked the ball. #9 on Lexington is a joy to watch. Great speed and very nice changes in speed to move past and through players, beautiful passing and first touch.

Dorman should match up well against Irmo but I'm betting on Irmo to take the state 4-A trophy back to the midlands.

We have played both(although the Irmo game was a scrimmage) and it should be a fantastic final. It will be interesting to see how Irmo is going to break through Dorman's 12 foot thick wall in the back.

Last night game was a treat to watch. Dorman deserved the win, I thought Lexington's #13 was outstanding, making up for a lack of speed in the midfielders who were exhausted. Fresh legs and more speed down the sides might have made the differece.

Chico, I know you often track the club makeup of the high school teams. How many CESA girls on the Dorman team? I believe Carolina Futbol Club is also well represented.

newbe agree Sam looked great on D and bringing ball upfield. Passes must be better but you could say that for all Lex's players except a couple. Agree with lap that Kelly and Kira looked great to. Both kept running and making things happen when some other O players stopped. Dunno if fresh legs or speed is answer but I do think like lf said passing has to be a TON better.

Chico, My question was a deliberate attempt to bring attention to the fact that Dorman is loaded with Carolina FC girls. 8 of the 11 that started against Lexington are either playing with CFC or did until last year.

Sarah Robinson - CFC
Chelsey Willett - CFC
Jackie DeJonckheere - CFC
Julia Chapman - CFC
Maggie Bond - CFC
Tori Danielson - CFC
Nathalie Emplit (CFC - switched to CESA last year)
Jennifer Emplit (CFC - quit playing last year)

Carmen Osorio - CESA
Alix Zongrone - CESA
Hannah Chapman - CESA

Dorman's success is certainly a reflection of the training the team has received at CFC. My compliments to Justin Collett, Nestor Chacon and the other CFC coaches.

I thought that was what you were up to. Sorry I couldn't be of more help but I'm glad my response gave you the mechanism you needed to praise your club. By the way, I heard from someone that there are 10 players total on the Dorman squad from CFC.

I've never thought of using this metric before as a club measurement; it's interesting and I'll have to give it some thought. The only thing I had seen before was stuff like number/percentage of all-state players and the like.

Congratulations (once again) to Dorman and to Dorman's players.

These stats are meaningless. Players move from club to club for many reasons and sometimes, more than once. UIHWKI must be affiliated with the CFC club. He/she is praising two club coaches and doesn't even credit the HS coach for anything. Also the following was omitted (voluntarily?): those same two coaches coach the majority of the Spartanburg HS team and look at their record. Will he/she blame the SHS coach for that? Bottom line: if someone wants publicity for their club, I don't think this is the proper place and, if it is, please, at least present both sides of the coin.
If you want metrics for club measurement, look at how many “serious” tournaments they attend, how many they won, how many times they won a state cup, etc…

Hurst,

Sorry for the late game report had to be up at 2:45 AM on Wednsday so I went straight to bed.

First off let me congratulate the Irmo Girls and coaching staff for a game well played and well won.

The game started off with Irmo winning most 50/50 balls. The Irmo team as whole had great team speed and their tenacity was endless. Irmo notched their first goal on a corner kick. The ball was curled into the net at the near post off the kick. There seemed to be a comunication breakdown between the keeper and defenders as noone attacked a ball driven about chest high. The next Irmo goal also came on a corner kick when the Wando team failed to clear a ball knocked down in the box. I was told by several players that this was actualy an own goal but I couldn't tell in the midst of bodies. Irmo continued to win most of the balls in the first half. Number 7 (Brittany H played well but was well defended by Wando) Irmo's right forward #9 I beleive had an incredible game, her speed helped create both the corners Irmo scored on. She turns the corner better than any player I've seen in the high school ranks.

Halftime 2-0

The second half saw Wando possess the ball for the most part. Irmo compressed the defense and dropped # 11 behind the backs a bit deeper. # 11 effectively cleared almost every ball that came into the box. #9 for Irmo managed to get around the corner and slotted a great shot to the far post for Irmo's third goal.

The Wando girls pressed hard and never quit til the final whistle. Hats off to Wando for a great season and Congratulations to Coach Shannon Champ for a job well done in her inaugural campaign.

Good luck to Irmo in the Final keep the streak of Lower Sate Champions going. You are by far the best team Wando faced all year.

Thank you MR. You saved me from scouring the internet for a link to a Charleston newspaper.

Sounds like it was just Irmo's night and they earned it. Good luck to them.

Wando will be back.....incredibly loaded at the 8th grade/U-14 level.

sakka, You're a little touchy today!!! Dorman's Coach Lorenz has done a terrific job. Without his coaching ability and leadership skills Dorman wouldn't be in the state playoffs. Did I mention that he was a CFC coach as well!!!!

Not touchy at all! Just trying to make things clear. Yes, Mr. Lorenz is a CFC coach and that is exactly my point: why didn't you mention his name instead of the other two?
