A rhetorical question, but what are the makings of a good JV program? Good coaching? Strong varsity program that doesn't move the younger girls up? Solid club structure? Lack of interest in softball?

ps: Can anyone give me an example of a girls' HS in SC where both soccer and softball programs are present at a very high level? I maintain the two (to) (too) are mutually incompatible.

In a 4A program, there should be enough girls around to supply talent for both softball and soccer. Two good coaches, and two good feeder programs would guarantee success.

What suffers...........is track!

One of these three sports needs to be moved to the fall. Logical choice would be soccer.

We've had a young varsity the past two seasons thus creating a stop-gap in our JV program. Big numbers with a lot of 9th and 10th graders can simply give us a physical advantage if skill is not enough.

25-8-1 the last three seasons. Six of those to the abominal mavericks.

Good coaching and a strong number of 9th/10th graders. It's great to have some middle school kids helping fill numbers, but you don't want to have to rely on them for your JV team. I like our middle-school teams that we've started this year in our district (Richland #2).

Thanks for the first concrete example that casts doubt on my premise that excelling in both girls' soccer and softball are mutually incompatible. I don't see many schools that can do both succesfully in the lower third of the state.

202677,

By having middle school teams start up in your district, the HS numbers are down. RNE couldn't field a JV team????

Brookland-Cayce's girls soccer team is currently ranked #1 in Class AAA and is always a good team. Our Lady Bearcats softball team is a perennial power and have won four state championships and finished runners-up on two occasions in the last fifteen years. In short, the two can co-exist and prosper.
