lpaf,
On the girls forum you stated that James Island may not field a girls JV team. At a very competitive 4A school, with grades 11 - 7 to choose from, how can you not field a JV team? The Charleston area is a "hot bed" of girls soccer talent. Are the 7th & 8th graders just playing club....and not playing JV?

I am as shocked as Hurst66. JI has been awesome for a number of years and not to have a thriving program is just amazing. Is anyone else having trouble fielding a Girls JV team?

I think the best 7th - 8th grade girl players are active in club ball. Mostly, I think, for CUSC, which provides training that has always seemed to me to be superior to that offered by a JV program. The James Island varsity team took a big hit in graduating seniors last year, but has a solid core of young athletes ready to step up.

Where's the old school spirit? FM JV girls are all playing high-level club ball this spring too. Two or three of them will also be playing ODP (made the final cut).

The whole JV vs Club controversy is visited and revisited on a quarterly basis somewhere on this board and has been forever. Great HS teams are built of great soccer players, not great JV teams. Why suggest there's a lack of school spirit?

I think most of the lowcountry girls that are 7th or 8th grade opt to play club and not JV. The school spirit isn't there in middle school. The JV teams are made up of lower-tier 9th and 10th graders, for the most part. In my opinion, that is who JV is for. By the time the top players get to high school, most go straight to Varsity.

Your description of JV is spot on. Few play both, opting to focus on one season at a time with age/skill appropriate competition. Makes for worries and nice surprises to varsity coaches in the winter.

A funny French moniker. I like that... Where'd you find the manhole cover quote?

It is interesting to hear about JI not fielding enough players. Also interesting that SSC is not fielding a club team for 13/14 year old girls as their program has been decimated by the lack of focus on the girls program at the club over the past few years. The Bridge doesn't even have a team for this group and that is supposed to be a combo of players from the low country esp. JI and SSC club; and driving to Mt Pleasant or CUSC is difficult at best for parents that can afford to spend hours on the road. Luckily the Summerville girls in 7/8 grades have an opportunity to play on JV there are at least 8 players trying out. Fortunatley, the talent on that team has been deep so the girls will get some good training with the older members of the team. We shall see after the cuts are made tomorrow. Go Smvl!!

James Island's girls program has always been low in numbers. It is too bad they don't have a team.
