With state cup pushed back, many of the tryouts across the state appear to be in direct conflict with SCYSA wording on recruiting violations. Go to SCYSA site under ethics. "any coach or player still involved in cup play may not initiate any contact with any player until that player's cup play is completed". Anybody heard any recent ruling from SCYSA pertaining to this?

A player showing up at tryouts is not the same thing as a coach initiating contact with a player, so it's legit.

The problem is every club is having tryouts before classic cup, and now challenge cup, is overwith, so if a coach wanted to contact a specific player before tryouts, the coach cannot. If the coach does, it is in violation of SCYSA rules.

But if the player contacts the coach first, then it's legit.

Having tryouts before players are done with state cup play, any age group, fall or spring, is a stupid idea and SCYSA should enforce a "tryout start date" that makes sure every player is done with state cup play before tryouts are held across the state.

BTW, SCYSA Rules and Compliance Director Michael Cook issued SCYSA's opinion:

a player still participating in the challenge bracket is not finished with cup play until after the rainout is played. You cannot make contact until the tournament is over. The last thing a player needs while getting ready for the state championship is coaches calling to recruit for next year. Hold your contacts until after the rain out is played.

So, let's see how many coaches and parents adhere to this...

Are you guys implying that everyone should change their tryout dates because state tournament was rained out?

Maybe this would be a mute point, if SCYSA was a little bit more careful with the facilities they select to host the state tournament.

in response to soccer parents concerns about the selection of the facility where the cup is played, i don't know any facility that could handle the amount of rain that the CSC complex received on the saturday of the challenge cup. were you there that morning? were you there last fall for the U15 & up state cups? if we had not gotten 3+ inches of rain in just a few short hours the fields and the complex would have been in marvelous condition to hold the cup. i have been the the mesa (?sp)complex in greenville when it has rained. those field do the same thing the CSC fields did, flood!!! if you have a problem with where the cup is held then i suggest that you get off your duff and sponsor the cup next year. CSC and the staff and volunteers have put in hundreds of hours getting ready for the 4 tournaments that make up the state cups. DO NOT COMPLAIN UNLESS YOU ARE READY TO DO THE WORK YOURSELF!!!!!!
right now barring another deluge the field are in great shape and ready for the cups. good luck to all teams playing in both cups.

GO NIGHTMARES!!!!!!

Forgetting the digression about adequate facilities and the shameless promotion that followed, the real question here is about tryouts being held before all teams are done with state cup play.

First off, "gawaine": No, we can't change our tryout dates now. The problem is that many clubs had already scheduled their tryouts to occur before the classic cup was completed. they should not have. My club did, and I now think it was a mistake. BUT, this year was weird--Easter was in March, Memorial day is not the last weekend of May, and instead of challenge state cup happening on the first weekend of May it was scheduled for the second. That's Mothers day weekend. Anyone who's been around SCYSA soccer knows that the classic cup is always on mothers day weekend, not challenge. But this year SCYSA scheduled it differently. They put memorial day as a rain-date for either cup--very bad idea. But so it is. With school getting out sooner, it put clubs in a bind: run tryouts before players leave for end of school vacations and before classic cup is completed, cram then in after classic cup, or wait until players return from vacations?

Second, SCYSA should enforce a date that before which no club can hold tryouts. If one club respects players in classic cup and does not schedule their tryouts until after, but a rival club goes ahead with tryouts before classic cup, then they have an advantage over the club that tried to do the right thing. Every club should have 1 day set when tryouts can begin. This would not interfere with challenge cup, classic cup, and the rain date. Woa--what a concept--give players a whole week or two between the end of state cup play and tryouts.

sorry for the digression.

you are right, tryouts should be after everything is complete. but this is a very strange year and it is too late to change dates, etc.

Let's be honest, NO state should hold tryouts until every player in the state has completed cup play. There should be at a minimum a state rule and preferably a national rule as to when tryouts can start.

Most people may not realize it, but the district cup play is actually the first round of the National Championship in ages u14-u19. There are a number of players that won't try out for another team until they are finished with cup play even if they already know they want to change teams. Is it fair to players to tryout and go to regionals without knowing their fate in tryouts. The results of the tryouts for teams attending regionals is not supposed to be released until after their season ends. Hopefully, another SC team can make it to nationals this year making their release early August.

Why are we as state so behind everyone else? I guess everyone here assumes we are going to get bashed every year and wants to get on with the next year. Instead of tryouts, play some friendlies, attend a tournament with guest players. Play some 6v6's and then you might have a better idea what these players can do come time for tryouts. How many coaches let a player come train during the year for a few weeks to get a look before offering him a spot. Why not let the players have a rest before they have to go through the pressure of tryouts. For some players, it is a very stressful situation.

Regionals are the end of June, nationals at the end of July. Tryout's should begin the first of August. Make the team, start practicing and start the season.

Good luck getting everyone on the same page for this on!!!

Who cares about club anyway? They ought to play classic soccer in the summer and end by end of August and extend the high school season to September through May like overseas. That's a real league! I hate club, but I do it just to keep up. No crowds, no excitement, no coverage, in short no one else cares. [Frown]
