RCates: The idea of August tryouts make sense theoretically, but with the league season starting on September 1, waiting until August to have tryouts is impractical. Try getting all the following done in four weeks:

- having tryouts for 8 age groups usually over a 1-2 week period,
- picking the players,
- waiting for their answers and calling alternates if necessary,
- organizing the team,
- getting all the required registration information and uniform sizes from the players,
- ordering uniforms and having them delivered and screen printed,
- submitting the registration info and waiting for rosters and player cards to come back.
- have enough training sessions to prepare the team to play as a team on opening day (especially if it is a new team or a team with a lot of new players)

It just won't get done in that amount of time. The uniforms alone typically take over a month.

One other thing I thought of. The leagues I have had teams play in require an application with deposits and off-date requests by the middle of July. If you don't have tryouts before August, the club would not even know how many teams you will have by mid-July.

ok so tryouts in August or even mid july are not good at all.

still, couldn't scysa have all clubs run tryouts during like a 2 week period in early june?

I know fams like to holiday after school gets out, but don't most fans wait until later in june or july so they can all have a break from school before they go on holiday?

And if so, will not most players who want to play classic soccer in the next year make themselves available for tryouts and not go on holiday during tryouts?

Really, U15 and older players are done with state cup play in December, so mid-to-late May tryouts after SCHSL and SCISA finals are done are ok. But U11-U14s still have state cup. How do you think a player feels when he or she is trying out for a new team, maybe a rival team, before finishing state cup play?

Maybe SCYSA should mandate separate dates for U15 and older and U11-U14 tryouts so that tryouts do not conflict with spring state cup play AND spring high school playoffs/championship, both HSL and SCISA.

Tryouts are a personal thing--one player independent of his/her teammates wants to explore playing on another team. That's stressful in and of itself. Why make a player face this stress while being stressed by his/her current state cup play?

When possessing the ball, players want to "relieve pressure" on the ball so they can maintain possession and then find an opportunity to penetrate the defense. As a coach, our obligation is to relieve pressure on the players so they can experience a better developmental environment. So why should clubs ADD pressure to players when it comes to tryouts while state cup play is still going on?

Why can't all clubs in SC hold tryouts in early June?

RCates, I couldn't agree more. It seems that this topic comes up every year and always has the word "recruiting" included. This year it was the rain-outs, last year it was the Goalbuster/GFC controversy. These would all be mute points if tryouts were held after the games are over.

Tryouts for U-13 and younger can be held in May after State Cup. Tryouts for U-14 and higher can be held in early July after Regionals. If a team advances to Nationals, tryouts for that particular age group and gender could be postponed until Nationals are over. Note: SC has sent only one team to Nationals, so unless we greatly improve our level of play, this will seldom be an issue.

The argument that State officials do not have time to handle the paperwork just does not wash in this age of computerization. Each team can send in their roster over the internet in a very specific format, so a minimal amount of manual work would be necessary.

The idea of sending registration info over the internet has been suggested each year for quite a few years. To date, SCYSA has rejected this idea because of the seurity and privacy issues involved. All registrars, coaches, managers, etc. are strongly urged NOT to send players' personal registration info over the internet.

If SCYSA would agree, transmission over the internet could be done securely in one of several ways. Two examples:
1. Secure email - this would protect the data but would require that everyone involved use a compatible encryption mechanism. Everyone would have to have email software that supports the encryption mechanism and encryption keys would have to be securely distributed to everyone.
2. Encrypted HTTP file transfer - this is probably the more desirable method since it would only require browser software and access to the web. Some form of authentication key would still need to be used to insure that only authorized persons accessed the data.

For now, however, as far as I know, SCYSA still requires a 10 day lead time for registration requests. The 10 days does not start until you get your info to your club registrar and after he/she sends it to the district registrar.

I don't think holding tryouts after regionals or nationals is a good solution, although a number of teams will be going to region III and 1 or 2 might go to nationals. The delay in a team beginning training, or a club offering summer training programs, due to late tryouts would not benefit SC. We need all the player and team development time we can get before playing in the RIII premier league and the U15+ challenge cup.

Most of the players in the state would benefit from all clubs waiting to hold tryouts until after the May rain-date. This would allow enough time to register players and begin summer team and club training programs.

I think clubs are unwilling to unilaterally delay their tryouts for fear of players trying out early for other clubs and then not coming to tryouts.

If SCYSA set a mandatory start date, then no clubs would have this fear and be at a disadvantage if they held tryouts later after clup play is totally completed.
