the turnout was terrible for 87s and 88s, I thought that more people would tryout for these teams.

The reason there was little turnout is that people have found out how political and expensive ODP is. It is social soccer for the well-to-do!

What does ODP in SC cost / year?

In NC, there is a $60 tryout fee, and then training 2X/month for 4 to 6 months at $25/training session.

Last year my son attended the Jekyll Island event, the cost for that was $250. He played in Charleston in June (?) for $250, and Regional Camp in AL was $830. They took one team to a tournament in Nantes, France, the cost for that was $1550 (It was not a required trip).

In NC, tryouts have been (and should be) very well attended, with between 50 and 100 players trying out for each age group (at least up to '88).

ODP handout estimated costs this year to be $1300. This included regional camp. We have $25 initial tryout fee...no monthly training fee...$50 state trial fee...the rest is tournaments and region camp. For those who are already struggling just to pay club fees and all the traveling for tournaments...it does seem like this is something only the financially "gifted" can afford. Scholarships are hard to come by and don't actually cover much. Is ODP absolutely necessary to be noticed by college coaches?? Is this the only reason we play ODP... Would like to hear responses on this...

I started a thread on the NC Soccer Forum regarding College Recruiting. Here is the link.

College Recruiting

People talk about their experience with the recruiting process, is HS soccer important, and how to get "noticed"

Enjoy! [Wink]

Thanks! Interesting points made there...especially about choosing the school...I guess the secret is to be pro-active.

To mbsocfan:

Yes, being proactive is the key. You have to "sell" yourself.

10 top reasons to participate in ODP

10) Prestige of being selected as one of the best soccer players in your state in your age group.
9) More soccer to fill up all those empty weekends.
8) Increased name recognition for college recruiters.
7) You can never have too many roadtrips.
6) Did I mention having more soccer to fill up all those empty weekends?
5) Exposure to new coaching
4) Opportunity to support the economies of other southern states
3) The ability to play/practice with a group of soccer players whose overall talents exceed those found on even the best high school or classic teams. (The no weak player hypothesis)
2) Making your club coach jealous.
1) If you make it to the Regional team you get all that great Addidas stuff and the trip expenses are free.

and one more...

Some of the kids really will make it to the olympic teams...
