My son has been playing club soccer for two years now. My question is should he tryout for the ODP team just meerily for the competition deffering any decision to play until after he makes the team? He is not going to give up his club team but what are the conflicts if any? I am also anticipating his tryouts for the high schools JV team after the first of the year. Will this cause conflicts with ODP? I am aware that some club coaches do not like for the kids to play both HS and Club but what do they say about ODP and club?

Some clubs love players participating in ODP, some clubs ignore it, and some clubs/teams work against it. Some HS coaches are laissez-faire concerning concurrent play [either club or ODP] and some are deeply against it. You need to ask your coach [and in club, perhaps your DOC].

Conflicts between ODP and club have been minimal in our experience just as conflicts between ODP and HS have been minimal [to non-existent]. If your son eventually makes the region or national pool or team, your son will probably have conflicts; how these are handled depends entirely on your specific club or HS coach.

While almost all coaches at the club and HS level are very receptive to players attempting to increase their skills and are willing to work through conflicts, there are a few that are really against any potential conflict. Talk to your club or HS coach and ask about conflicts, penalties for missing practices and games, and how the coach feels personally about concurrent seasons of play.

After that, you can prioritize and help your son make the best decision based on his talents and goals.

Agreed with Chico.... my involvement showed very little conflict with club. As a matter of fact Club play is priority per the ODP staff.

Then there is the fact that if your son wants to play in college, being a member of the state ODP program gets you more mileage than playing HS.

I would say give it a try, and then decide.

We will be testing the waters over the next few months. My son most definetly wants to tryout for the JV team and possibly ODP. At this point I am not sure what his club coach will say. We will cross that bridge when the time arises. My son is fortunate in that I believe all three coaches will want him on their teams. The decision may come down to the quality of coaching. Thanks for the info.

ODP is really not that big of a conflict if any at the HS or Club. There are plenty of pros/cons on doing ODP but conflict doesn't ever seen to be something that comes up. ODP does the tryous after the club fall season on purpose and asks the ODP coaches to not go crazy until after the club and HS seasons are over in the spring. Probably the biggest complaint againist ODP is that they don't do enough through the HS and Club seasons,so you start to feel a little cheated.

Alright....now that the decision to tryout for the ODP team has been made what are the pros & cons of actually playing. What are the costs and time commitments? It is my understanding that practices are scheduled around the state to share the traveling pain! How are practices conducted? When is the season? and how many games are actually played. By the way my son's club coach is encouraging my son to tryout!

Thanks for the help to all that respond!

Usually one practice a month on a weekend for 4 hours across a lunch hour, so traveling is really not that bad and most of them try schedule in Columbia for the meet half way rule or at there college because of the field scheduling issues. It starts in December and ends in June or July depending on when your camp is scheduled, $75 to tryout, usually $200 for the interstate games in January and $600 for the camp during the summber. Some coaches might do a mini camp just before the ODP camp and that usually runs about $75. College coaches have to charge for the mini camp because of possible recruiting violations. So that comes to about $950 for the entire process.

I hope this helps. Every coach is different so I could be exact or completely wrong.
