Leverkusen through to final; Manchester United out

Bayer Leverkusen's Oliver Neuville looped a shot over Manchester United goalkeeper Fabien Barthez late in the first half to put the German side into the Champions League final with a 1-1 home draw Tuesday on the heels of last week's 2-2 decision in the first leg. Roy Keane had put the English giants ahead in the 28th minute. On Wednesday, Real Madrid guards a comfortable 2-0 first-leg advantage at home against rival Barcelona.

I was laughing so hard my sides hurt yesterday...the look on Fergie's face... [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Kind of a pity the Bayer fans didnt sing YNWA again though...

Seriously though, that epitomized why i hate Manchester Utd.
1. They are bad sports. Twice they refused to return possession to Bayer after injuries [Mad]
2. Donkey-boy continues to dive, and is shocked that European refs arent intimidated like the ones in England.
3. Fergie's incessant whining. "Leverkusen got lucky..." "we deserved to go through..." "There was too much stoppage time..." Of all people, fergiscum has no reason to complain...

Oh well too bad mancs, your out of the CL, and Arsenal will paste you this weekend...cheer up, and have a prawn sandwich on me... [Big Grin] [Big Grin] [Big Grin]

Thanks for asking. Yeah, they made it in with their fourth place Premiership finish. Here's an article if you're interested. It includes the other clubs too!

UNITED CLINCH CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFICATION SPOT
The point earned by Newcastle at Ewood Park last night in a 2 - 2 draw, courtesy of two Alan Shearer goals, finally confirmed United's place in the Champions League. Assuming, as is likely, a finishing position of fourth, Newcastle United will enter the competition at the third qualifying round stage in August - and victory in the two-legged tie launches United into the first group stage of the Champions League.
The top two teams from the Premiership go directly into the first group phase of the Champions League and currently the teams placed third and fourth are entered into the third qualifying round where matches are, subject to confirmation, played on 14 and 28 August.
A delighted United Chairman Freddy Shepherd said:

"It is absolutely tremendous that we have secured fourth place in the Premiership, and with it, a place in the qualifying round for the Champions League. Bobby, his staff, and all the players have done fantastically well this season and it is an achievement we have thoroughly deserved.

"During our time in the Premier League, the Club has played in European Competitions, six out of the last eight seasons. We are all now looking forward to the new challenge ahead."

United last competed in the Champions League in the 1997/98 season. Then, under Kenny Dalglish, The Magpies defeated Croatia Zagreb in two nail biting matches, with Temuri Ketsbaia scoring the deciding goal 30 seconds from the end of extra time in Zagreb.

Newcastle went on to face Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven and Dynamo Kiev before going out in the first group phase. - the memorable 3 - 2 home win over Barcelona, who had Rivaldo and Luis Figo in their line-up, being the highlight of the campaign.

But who will join United in the final qualifying round of Europe's premier club tournament next season? Only three countries - England, Spain and Italy - have two guaranteed third qualifying round entries, and a dozen more have one guaranteed entry.

Looking at the European league tables to find the clubs presently occupying the third qualifying round positions, and other clubs who could do so at the season's end produces the folowing.

Spain: Deportivo La Coruna and Celta Vigo. Other candidates: Barcelona, Real Betis.
Italy: AS Roma, Chievo Verona. Other candidates: Lazio, AC Milan, Bologna, Juventus, Inter Milan.
Germany: Bayern Munich. Other candidates: Schalke, Hertha Berlin, Borussia Dortmund.
France: Auxerre. Other candidates: Paris St Germain, Olympique Lyonnais, Lens.
Holland: Feyenoord. Other candidates: PSV Eindhoven, Vitesse, Heerenveen.
Turkey: Fenerbahce. Other candidates: Galatasaray.
Greece: AEK Athens. Other candidates: Olympiakos.
Russia: Lokomotiv Moscow (season finished).
Portugal: Sporting Lisbon. Other candidates: Boavista.
Czech Rep: Slovan Liberec. Other candidates: Viktoria Zizkov.
Belgium: Genk. Other candidates: Bruges, Anderlecht.
Ukraine: Dynamo Kiev. Other candidates: Shakhtar Donetsk.
Austria: Tirol Innsbruck. Other candidates: Sturm Graz.
Norway: Rosenborg. (season finished).

All other European countries have only one team entering the tournament, either in the second or first qualifying round.

Teams entering the second qualifying round are likely to include Celtic (Scotland), Basle (Switzerland), Zagreb (Croatia), Hammarby (Sweden), Legia Warsaw (Poland), Brondby (Denmark), Dinamo Bucharest (Romania), Partizan Belgrade (Yugoslavia), MTK Budapest (Hungary), MSK Zilina (Slovakia) and Maccabi Haifa (Israel).

There are 22 other entrants into the first qualifying round, including Barry Town of Wales and Shelbourne of Eire.

Teams who lose in the third qualifying round of the competition have the fall-back of being entered into the first round of the UEFA Cup and the team finishing in third place in the first group phase of the competition, goes into the third round of the UEFA Cup.

The early matches in both competitions, up until Christmas, are provisionally scheduled as follows:

14 August 2002 Champions League Third Qualifying Round (1)
28 August 2002 Champions League Third Qualifying Round (2)
18 September 2002 Champions League First Group Phase (1)
UEFA Cup Round One (1)
25 September 2002 Champions League First Group Phase (2)
2 October 2002 Champions League First Group Phase (3)
UEFA Cup Round One (2)
23 October 2002 Champions League First Group Phase (4)
UEFA Cup Round Two (1)
30 October 2002 Champions League First Group Phase (5)
13 November 2002 Champions League First Group Phase (6)
UEFA Cup Round Two (2)
27 November 2002 Champions League Second Group Phase (1)
UEFA Cup Round Three (1)
11 December 2002 Champions League Second Group Phase (2)
UEFA Cup Round Three (2)
