follow La Liga from time to time...Valencia is my favorite team there...i might have a little more respect for Real if they didnt have their government bailing them out so much...

Real Madrid is essentially a government team...the government in Madrid has a long history of relieving Real's debts incurred from transfer fees, salary, etc...how else do you think they would be able to afford players like Zidane, Ronaldo, Raul, Roberto Carlos, etc.?

I guess i really cant argue with that, however the fact of teh matter is really that no matter what caliber players it still takes alot to win big games, however your argument is very valid. I have loved them for about 5 years now ever since i found out of them with my girlfriend, whom happens to live in madrid. I got the priveladge of watching the fifa world vs. madrid game over my christmas break and the experience was like that of no other i have ever experienced and i cant help it but say i really love them. i can see where you are coming from however and maybe one day the team can earn some of your respect until then or after.......

Also on the whole comment of the government bailing out the team, other than being the greatest sport in teh world soccer is also a business just like all other sports and in Madrid if you know anything there are many money making industries but one of the biggest is Real Madrid football, so would youlet one of your biggest money makers get into trouble........ I dont think you would, which makes me wonder why that doesnt happen to more football clubs over the world...

the thing is its not fair to only help out one club and not all the rest...why doesnt Valencia get funding from the government? or Deportivo? or Recreativo Huelva? and you dont see parliament stepping in and funding all the foundering lower division clubs do you?

i dont actively dislike Real, two of my favorite players (Raul and Zidane) play there, i just find it hard to consider them legitimate

In my case i do not really have feelings one way or another what team the govt. helps, i merely love real madrid, however let me leave with one question. It might take a little knowledge of teh govt. which i would have to further research to answer, however if you were in the govt.s shoes what would you do?

Real Madrid won 4-1 at the weekend, the first game I've watched them properly - the scorers were Raul, Figo(pen), Zidane and Ronaldo (Ronaldo missed pen).
It was a good result, but, taking the performance in the context of the Champions League it was poor. They are VERY vulnerable down the flanks - Figo on the right and Carlos on the left may sound like a dream combo, but in reality they can't defend to save their lives!! I can see Giggs and Pires having fun against Real if they ever meet. Real are without rival going forward, but, a team is built on its foundations - the defence, the ugly jobs that don't get headlines, and sadly this is where Real come up wanting - there is only so much the ageing Hierro can do. I do hope they go all the way again this year, but if they come up against someone who'll take the game to them I think they'll REALLY struggle.

um i dont know what you mean foley by a dream combo vulnerable. fist of all carlos's partner on the right flank is not figo it is salgado, a very strong defender. Seeing as i live here and they dont show any of the games i dont know if salgado was out for suspension and figo was back there, but salgado does normally play right back and figo in the mid as an outside attacking mid. I agree with the fact that carlos is not the best defender, however he still is one of the best players in the world and the comment of him getting toyed with by giggs or pires is a joke. Enough said. I am glad you think their 4-1 win was enough for your approval, however we had a very poor opening to the second stage but i promise you we are in good form and are very capable of havig another strong showing the rest of the way out. I have one question for you. Seeing as how we won it last year and have such a strong team year in and year out( which included carlos in the back) how have we won as much as we have if their defence which is pretty much the smae as in recent years, is so bad? I would like to see your response or any others if you feel so inclined.

Another comment to your saying that if we come across anyone who will really take it to us we will struggle. That is rediculous to me for i have one instance...... right before we went on christmas break we played ac milan who arguably could have been THE best team in the world at the time and we were not playin our best football, how could you call our defence that bad if we managed to only give up one goal on a beautiful through ball from rui costa and a great finish by shevchanko. I dont see how you could say we would struggle, it seemed as if we didnt, unless you are saying that ac milan are not a good team that can really take it to other teams.

Firstly, Figo was playing right midfield - kinda - and Carlos was playing as a left wing back/attacking full back. I never said that Giggs or Pires would toy with Carlos - they are both left sided players and so would be up against Figo, who isn't exactly renowned for his defensive qualities - that said, neither are the other two players (Giggs&Pires) but the players they have behind them are more solid than Salgado who, like the rest of the team is an "attacking" defender. My point was that Hierro is the only defender that I could see in that game whose main priority is actually defending!! And that maybe it COULD be a problem, but, like Newcastle under Kevin Keegan, Real are playing with a "who cares if we conceed 3 when we can score 5" mentality - which is great to watch, BUT, teams like AC Milan that rely on a strong defence and grabbing a goal can cause problems for Real. Personally, I don't think Real would have any problems with Arsenal or Man Utd. should they meet - Reals problem will be motivation - they are a club team who could beat most, if not all International teams. The one chink in their armour, you must admit, is defence. I think they should have a more solid man beside Zizou in the centre, instead of "headless chicken extrordinaire" Makelele they should have bought Roy Keane or Patrick Vieira.

what can i say a foley you have a great point, i cant argue with you at all. I very much agree with you on the fact that on the overall basis their defensive motivations, are normally more focused on attacking. I also agree that it makes it very interesting to watch, and yes i also agree that it is very frustrating to see a game end with a lose, simply because we could not score and our defence was not strong, as it is not most of the time. I also agree that hierro is coming to an end of his career and htat hurts alot. I do know that for a while we were looking to try and acquire chivu from ajax but i have not heard much of that since. I also agree that it would be nice to see some def. mid. but can you argue with the skill of the midfielders we have i know you are not trying to i am just stating. Vicente Del Bosque reign as ruler over madrid is coming to an end soon, and they will have a new coach that might change the formation around, but i doubt it, cause real madrid is like all other teams in the spanish league, they are flashy and not based on defense, they are based on overwhelming a defense as you know. For now i could never see them changing the way they play. English teams are based on defense and physical play as the spanish are more based on a flashy offensive oriented game.
I am very happpy to hear your comments however.

FINALLY - someone agrees with me on this site!!
But, about Real, they are without a doubt the best attacking team in the world at the moment - but not the best team. They have 11 INDIVIDUALS who are the best, or there abouts, in their positions. But, you can have 11 of the best individuals against the best "TEAM" - and who'll come out on top??......well, the 11 individuals probably will win 9 times out of 10, but I hope that the one time isn't in the knockout phases of the Champions League - Real need to win it again to keep the books balanced....well, pay the interest on their debts!

I don't really agree about your comment on English teams, its a common misconception that its all defence, but its not really, my team - West Ham, couldn't defend themselves from an angry old lady with an umbrella this season, but they are still playing some great footy.

hahaha ok i appologize for stereotyping all of england i didnt mean to catagorize them all as being that, i was merely using a misconception of the english. I do very much agree with the fact that there are alot of teams including english who play very nice attacking football, so i am sorry for the stereotype.

one of my friends went to see the Champions League final in Glasgow with his brother last year. He said it was unreal. I was in the states at the time, and didn't see Zizous volley until about a week later, my girlfriend had her sateillite hooked up and there was all sorts of "artistic [Wink] " movies on 24hrs a day, looking at the replays of Zidane's goal was 100 times better!
