Posipanko Says Small Class Is Very Talented

ROCK HILL, SC -— Winthrop men’s soccer head coach Rich Posipanko announced the recruiting class for the 2004 men’s soccer season, Thursday afternoon.

Posipanko hopes this year’s crop of players will help guide Winthrop to its second Big South Championship in three years. With the goal of improving on last year’s 11-8-1 record, Posipanko will bring in five new faces to replace only three departing seniors.

Winthrop returns 25 players including three red-shirt freshmen who are expected to make a contribution. Also returning to the line-up, after season ending injuries, will be Thomas Gibson and Steve Winton.

"We are excited and feel very good about this recruiting class," said Posipanko, who enters his 16th season as head coach of the Eagles. "Every player we brought in has the ability to contribute immediately. This is one of our smaller classes in terms of actual numbers, but we feel one of our best in talent."

Sean Weron (Richardson, TX) is a freshman midfielder who played for Dallas Solar Soccer Club and Andromeda SC. Weron was captain and MVP at Plano East High School. Posipanko feels Weron can make an immediate contribution due to his excellent technical ability and vast experience at club level.

David Kenga (Mombassa, Kenya) is a sophomore transfer from Southern Nazarene University. Playing as both a midfielder and forward, Kenga tallied 17 goals and 2 assists as Nazarene finished 12th in NAIA with a 16-5-2 overall record. Kenga is a former teammate of Winthrop standout Michael Chumah and Posipanko believes Kenga can be the player to carry much of the goal scoring load now that Vali Arnason has graduated.

Kevin Keegan (Mullingar, Ireland) comes to Winthrop as junior transfer from Darton Junior College in Georgia. As team captain, Keegan was named to the First Team All-Region in 2002 and 2003 and was a NJCAA All-American in 2003. Darton finished with a 15-3-0 record and 18th place in the NJCAA. Posipanko says Keegan can help fill the void in the midfield created by Arnason’s departure and quickly become a top conference performer. Keegan is a former teammate of Winthrop captain, David Garry.

Duncan Williams (Falling Waters, WV) is a freshman forward from Hedgeville High School. As team captain Williams was selected to the First team in All-Area, All-Region, and All-State. He currently plays for Tri-County Soccer Club. Williams was also an All-State basketball player in high school. Posipanko feels Williams will be one of the best athletes on the squad and now that he is concentrating on soccer, should be able to excel in the future.

Chris Moak (Mobile, AL) is a freshman goalkeeper from W.P. Davidson High School. Moak has been selected to the Alabama ODP team for each of the last three years. He plays club soccer for Capital City Streaks and is also on the Region III Team. Posipanko believes Moak has the ability to challenge Steve Winton for the starting job in 2004 but my ultimately be red shirted to preserve his eligibility.
