Arsenal Reserves 4-0 Luton Town

American Danny Karbassiyoon of Virginia, who played in the 2003 McDonald's All-American Game at Blackbaud Stadium, started for the Gunners.

Sylvain Wiltord made a goal-scoring return to fitness as Arsenal Reserves beat Luton 4-0 in a friendly played behind-closed-doors at London Colney on Tuesday afternoon.

The French striker had not figured in a first-team game since December 16 because of an ankle injury. But he showed few signs of rustiness as he clipped home Arsenal's third in the 65th minute.

Danny Karbassiyoon played the ball into the area from the left-wing and 15-year-old striker Anthony Stokes laid off the ball intelligently for Wiltord to lift it over the advancing keeper.

Arsenal fielded mainly a Reserve side against their opponents from just up the M1, with the notable additions of Martin Keown, Pascal Cygan and Kanu.

It was the Nigerian who put the home team ahead in the 25th minute. Michal Papadopulos sent his fellow striker through on goal and Kanu produced his trademark shimmy to beat the keeper and tap home.

Eight minutes later roles were reversed as Papadopulos ran on to Kanu's slide-rule pass before slamming home his shot.

Wiltord made it 3-0 just past the hour and then five minutes from time, Adam Birchall was fouled just outside the area and Stokes stepped up to curl the free-kick over the wall and into the top corner.

Arsenal Squad -- Graham Stack, Rami Shabaan, Alex Bailey, MARTIN KEOWN, Olafur-Ingi Skulason, PASCAL CYGAN, Anthony Stokes, SYLVAIN WILTORD, KANU, Patrick Cregg, Jordan Fowler, Danny Karbassiyoon, Michal Papadopulos, Adam Birchall

Karbassiyoon loaned to Ipswich
Tuesday, 21 December 2004

ARSENAL NEWS - Daniel Karbassiyoon has joined Championship side Ipswich Town on loan for one month.

The young American hasn't had much of a chance of first team football at Highbury, apart from in the Carling Cup in which he scored the winning goal at Manchester City.

The 20-year-old can play as a full back or wide mifielder and will give Joe Royle more options in those positions.

"He can play left back or left side of midfield and providing the paperwork is completed in time - and I'm sure that will happen - he will be added to the squad for tonight's game." Royle told the club's official site.

"With Drissa [Diallo] out until January, we are short of numbers in the full back positions, but Daniel will give us options now."

Some of you may remember Karbassiyoon from the All-American High School Game played at Blackbaud Stadium a couple of summers ago. He is from Virginia and was scouted by Arsenal and Manchester United at the adidas Elite 11 camp at CASL two years ago.

I saw Karbassiyoon play in the McDonald's All-American Game at Blackbaud Stadium a couple of years ago.

Arsenal set to release five young professionals

DANNY KARBASSIYOON
Karbassiyoon arrived at Highbury as a striker but was soon plying his trade on the left flank and is now making steady progress as a full-back. He made his mark in the Carling Cup last season, coming on as a substitute to score in a 2-1 win against Manchester City and making further appearances against Everton and Manchester United. He then enjoyed a productive loan spell at Ipswich.

Burnley have completed the signing of Daniel Karbassiyoon. The fullback, who has just been released by Arsenal, will solve Steve Cotterill's left back problem after Mo Camara joined Celtic last week. Karbassiyoon has agreed a two year contract with the Clarets.

The American, who turns 21 in August, is no stranger to the Championship after playing 5 games for Ipswich Town last season. Karbassiyoon joined Arsenal in August 2003 originally as a striker before being converted to play on the left.

He made his debut for the Gunners in their 2-1 win at Manchester City in the Carling Cup last season when he came off the bench to score the winner. He also played in their victory over Everton in the following round and came off the bench to play in the Gunners defeat at Manchester United in the 5th Round.

He was released by Arsenal at the end of the season as he was behind Ashley Cole and Gael Clichy in the pecking order for the left back position.
