Good to see former Bishop England standout Lawrence Smith and Socastee all-star Tommy Irwin having success against a Palmetto State team.

College Soccer News Honors Troy Lesesne and the Cougars

Charleston, SC – The College of Charleston men’s soccer team, still fresh off its 3-0 win over then 15th-ranked South Carolina last week, is ranked 26th in the latest College Soccer News poll. College Soccer News also named Troy Lesesne to the National Team of the Week.

The Cougars, who received votes in last week’s poll, enter the national rankings for the first time since 1996 when they ended the season ranked 24th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll.

Charleston is currently 11-4 overall and 5-0 in the Southern Conference. The league mark is the best since the Cougar went 8-0 in the TAAC (now Atlantic Sun). Charleston defeated Elon Sunday to give the Cougars their sixth win in a row, tying a CofC Division I record for most wins in a row. Charleston started its win streak with the win over 11th-ranked St. John’s Oct. 3rd.

The College of Charleston leads the Southern Conference in shots and is second in points, goals and assists. Cougar Tony Myers leads the league in shots, while goalkeeper Keith Wiggans is fourth in the SoCon in goals against average and second in saves.

Troy Lesesne, a senior from Columbia, scored the game-winner last Wednesday against South Carolina and contributed a goal and an assist in the victory over Elon Sunday to earned his spot on the national team of the week.

The Cougars host Georgia Southern Wednesday, Oct. 27th at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, SC. They are 4-0 at home this year and are 17-1-1 over the past three years at the facility. Charleston closes out its Southern Conference slate when it hosts #1 UNC Greensboro Oct. 30th. That game will also be at Patriots Point at 6:00 PM.

From a recruiting standpoint it must be a huge disadvantage for USC not to be a part of a soccer conference. I’m sure there are other disadvantages for USC since the SEC doesn’t have men’s soccer.

Why can't the SEC add men's soccer?
