What countries have spots in the World Cup? ESPN.com didn't help me squat on what I wanted to know. Did the USA team make the World Cup...and why did they start the qualifying a year before the World Cup?

The teams that have qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany are:

1. Brazil, 2002 World Cup Champion (Korea/Japan)
2. Germany, host nation

The "qualifying" rounds are actually a two-year process and for more information, check out this link at http://soccernet.espn.go.com/feature?id=275159&cc=5901.

Kyle you suck!! [Smile] The champion of the World cup does not qualify directly anymore, they have to qualify(that is why Brazil is playing in the S. American Qualifiers)

I stand corrected after FootballerTR informed me that even the past champion has to qualify for the 2006 World Cup. Argentina hosts Brazil tomorrow night in a winners-take-all clash in CONMEBOL action. The top four teams from this region will qualify for the World Cup in Germany. The fifth place team will take on Oceania in a "play-in" game for a berth to the 32-team tournament.

In all fairness, this is the first year the defending champion does not automatically qualify. France (defending champs from 2002 did automatically qualify for Korea/Japan). I think it is a good thing since so much can change over a four year period.

However, the host country must always have an automatic bid. If the interesting scenario occured that the defending champion happened to be the next host, well, you have to give them the free pass.

Love soccernet

Does the fourth place CONCACAF team get to play a play-in game or are they out?
