Cruz Azul coach feared kidnapped

Associated Press

MEXICO CITY -- The Argentine coach of the Cruz Azul soccer team was attacked and feared kidnapped Tuesday as he left a practice facility on the Mexican capital's southern outskirts.
Ruben Omar Romano, 47, was forced from his gray BMW van by five armed assailants who swarmed the area in several vehicles as he left the team's La Noria sports complex. Mexico City police said they could not confirm Romano had been abducted, but they did not know where he was. Cruz Azul vice president Alfredo Alvarez told a local radio station that five men forced the coach into a vehicle and drove away.

Outside the practice facility, police recovered Romano's vehicle, which had one of its back windows shot out and was pressed against a concrete wall. Two sport utility vehicles, which investigators said may have been used by the assailants, were found a short distance away.

Romano's father, Jose, who lives in Guadalajara, Mexico's second-largest city, said he had not been contacted with ransom demands, but that he feared for his son's safety. He wept while speaking to Mexican newspapers and television stations late Tuesday.

"I would like to ask the people who have him to be understanding with him, because Ruben is a very good person, a good son, a good father," Jose Romano was quoted in Mexico City's Reforma newspaper. "Please return him as he is, please don't hurt him."

Romano took over a struggling Cruz Azul in December 2004 and guided the squad to a speedy turnaround that included several weeks in first place of the Mexican League. Romano's team was eliminated by another Mexico City powerhouse, America, the eventual champion, in the playoffs.

About the comment, unfortanly we still have a lot of crime and violence down in Latin America, and is sad, but is true.

"Maybe they'll let him watch some Futbol videos??"

I found that quote really interesting. I don't know what is the reason for posting this kinds of comment. Let me tell you that people around the world don't see Americans as "heroes" because of "liberating" other countries from regimes.

A kidnapping is nothing comparing to all the people American's Presidents have killed all over the world! I don't think this has nothing to do with "racism" or "hating"

All this things happens around the world because of POVERTY, EXPLOTATION, AND ANOTHER WORD WE ARE ALL FAMILIAR WITH

IMPERIALISM!

If you don't know what's going on down is those countries, just SHUT UP.

I BET YOU WOULDN'T BE HAPPY WITH ME PICKING ON THOSE STUPID HOOLIGANS, OR THOSE ITALIANS THAT HURTED DIDA IN THE INTER-MILAN GAME?

MAYBE ALL THOSE SICK *******S THAT FILL THE INTERNET WITH UNDERAGE PORN, ALL THAT COMES FROM EUROPE YOU KNEW THAT? FROM "INDUSTRILIZED" COUNTRIES THAT EXPLOTE TEENAGERS FROM EASTERN EUROPE!

MAYBE THOSE THAT BRING BANANAS TO THE FOOTBAL FIELDS TO CALL HENRY OR ETO A MONKEY?

AGAIN, DON'T BE STUPID, IF YOU DON'T LIKE MEXICAN OR SOUTH AMERICAN FUTBOL FINE, DON'T WATCH IT, WE DON'T NEED LOSERS LIKE YOU!

YOU ARE STUPID, A LOSER AND A RACIST.

JUST TALK ABOUT SOCCER MAN, I'VE DECIDED NOT TO COME BACK, BUT YOU'RE FORCING ME TO DO IT WITH YOUR STUPID CRAP...

YOU'RE NOT AN AMERICA, AND YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT FUTBOL SO SHUT UP, AND TALK ABOUT PREMIER OR SOCCER THE ONLY THING YOU KNOW!

Although some of the items written here can be consider derogatory, Fenomeno, you should bite your tongue or otherwise keep your mouth shut. Those who will show themselves as racist can do it without anyone's help. You fanning the fire does not help. Back off the politics, we have enough disagreement within the sport to keep us talking.

Fenomeno,
I cannot understand why you link discussions about soccer or futbol to the political/military policies of the USA.????
I served in the military in Britain for 12 years and carried out operations on every continent and believe me, murderers are murderers and it has nothing to do with poverty or exploitation of anybody, by anybody. That is an argument made by people to justify the murder of innocents in the name of some "cause". It is nonsense.
This is a soccer forum and lets keep it that way. Try Free Republic if you want a political or foreign policy debate.
I, for one, will not be disappointed if you carry out your oft-repeated threat to withdraw from this message board.

I cause trouble because I actually know a lot about soccer.

I cause trouble because I'm good at it.

I cause trouble because I know who is the best!

I cause trouble because I think Henry suck!

I cause trouble because I DON'T ENJOY LONG BALLS AND THAT THING YOU GUYS CALL SOCCER.

I cause trouble because Americans actually learn what futbol is all about from me!

I cause trouble because I don't like racist Europeans, I DON'T CARE IF YOU ARE WHITE, CHINESE, BLACK, CAMBODIAN OR WHATEVER.... THIS IS AMERICA, RESPECT OTHERS! THERE WERE FRENCH AND SPANIARNDS IN THIS STATE BEFORE THE ENGLISH MAN PROCLAIMED THEIR LAND, SO DON'T TELL ME THAT I DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT TO GIVE MY OPINION.

YOU RESPECT ME AND I RESPECT YOU!

I cause trouble because I don't come to the forum to pick on Mexicans or South-Americans...

Yeah dude take me out of the forum, and ban spanish from the high school soccer fields, and keep making fun of Mexicans "kidnapping" and futbol...

I don't really care, I have bunch of white, black, europeans, and even chinese friends, you know why? Because of soccer! I don't descriminate anybody or make fun of their accent. I watch Goltv all the time with my friend who is white-caucasian and he loves MADRID, HE LOVES BOCA JRS,

HE KNOWS WHERE THE BEST SOCCER IN THE WORLD COMES FROM.

HAVE A NICE ONE. AT LEAST YOU GUYS KNOW WHAT FUTBOL IS ALL ABOUT NOW AND WHEN PEOPLE TELLS YOU THAT HENRY OR BECKAM ARE THE BEST FOOTBALLER IN THE WORLD YOU'LL LAUGH JUST LIKE I DO.

ALRIGHT LATER. TAKE IT EASY.

every part of the world has their own players which they will argue would be among the best. Your list points to players from Latin America (very few Central American ....HMMMM!) that have made an impact worldwide. (By the way you forgot Zico , Jair, Jairzhino, Carlos Alberto, Cubillas, Salas, etc. by the way I would personally place the 1970 Brazil team against anyone today) point is that the majority of the names are in the past.
The newer guys all play or have played in Europe where they got the recognition.... Why? because of money and Europe has the money and the Latin teams want that money and therefore sell the player. (I can remember when the argentinian and brazilian leagues where considered as the only places for latinos to play.)

In Europe the strengths of the leagues cycles from place to place. Sometimes, it is the premier league, then is the Bundesliga or Serie A or La Liga.
In any case the game is being played and played well by many players from all over. You may not like a certain style but that is all. To say that players like Platini, Beckenbauer, Van Basten, Maldini, Baggio, Raul, Stoichkov, Klinsman, Eusebio, Zidane, Figo, etc are not able to play and play well in Latin teams would only make you ignorant.

So here is something I hope you understand

Dejate de romper los huevos, y habla sobre el futbol que tu conoces y el estilo con que se juega. O no digas nada.

To my english speaking friends, do not bother to translate in the internet as it never translates right anyway

Latin America vrs Europe.

1. Maradona vrs Zidane = hahahahaha
2. Pele vrs Best = hahahaha, Best is from England right? I think he was good...
3. Ronaldo vrs Henry = hahaha
4. Di Estafano vrs Platini = didn't see them play, but I think Di Estafano won like 4 CLs, I don't know crap about platini, I only know he was from France.
5. Kempes vrs Puskas = hahaha
6. Gonzalez vrs ? Maybe Figo = hahahahaha
7. Franchescoli vrs ? = hahahaha

The thing is, Feno, that you don't even give anyone else a chance. Everything that is from South America is automatically the best, which is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Yes, the best player ever came from South America, I will give you that, but many of the greats in history have come from Europe, and if you're going to try to deny this, you obviously have no knowledge of and/or respect for soccer. The most hilarious thing about all of this is, you're not even South American, and you argue as if you are. Get a life man, and please Kyle/Kevin, it's time to get rid of this sad, sad person.

Fenomeno,
How can you possibly imply that you know more about soccer (or futbol as you insist on calling it), or play better than any of the rest of us?

1. You've never seen me play
2. You are either deaf or refuse to acknowledge any argument the rest of us put forth.

Would you please stop turning every one of our posts into a personal attack on you. If I say something like "European soccer is every bit as competetive as South American", You call me a racist and accuse me of hating latinos and the spanish language.

Seriously man, be rational.

Oh, and by the way, you accuse us of being racist Americans, but you say things like:"To prove what? to who? are you like from southamerica or something?"; Implying that he cannot possibly be any good if he is not from S. America, right?

So fenomeno, When are you leaving? I'll help you pack. Just please leave us "sucky" American soccer players, coaches, and refs in peace.

-p.s. fenomeno- I could school you in soccer, futbol, football, calcio, fusbal, or whatever you want to call it, any day of the week.

My friend fenomeno.... You obviously do not know your South American Spanish as you would have probably known by the sentence, which part of South America I am from. I played many years and have coached many years, so I do nknow of what I speak a little. To say the same as one of the other posts, you preach about players from a continent you do not even belong to. So why would'nt someone else be able to do the same.

So SouthAmerica is another continent? Oh my god dude, go back to first grade, really!

"cap'n walt" you go to Ben Lipen (really really small school), plis... i though you were cool... what are you doing saturday night? I'll bring you to a practice (let me know) let see if you can play some of the big boys around here.

REALLY I LEARNED THAT THE SOUTH AND THE NORTH WERE REGIONS OF OUR CONTINENTS SINCE I WAS IN KINDERGARDEN.

YOU GO TO SCHOOL AND THE FIRST DAY THE TEACHER TELLS YOU;

"THIS IS AMERICA, WE WERE DISCOVERED BY CRISTOBAL COLON, AND CONQUERED BY SPANIARDS. BRAZIL WAS CONQUERED BY PORGUESES AND THE BRITISH CONQUERED MOST OF NORTH AMERICA."

Dude actually I though you were smart...

"Southamerica is another continent" I wonder what you Kindergarden teacher would think about you saying that.

Really dude, hit up some books man. Read some, and better luck next time.

Maybe you need to change your moniker... as Fenomeno does not seem to fit you

The Continents
A continent is defined as a large unbroken land mass completely surrounded by water, although in some cases continents are (or were in part) connected by land bridges. The seven continents are North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica. The island groups in the Pacific are often called Oceania but this name does not imply that scientists consider them the remains of a continent.

Political considerations have often overridden geographical facts when it came to naming continents. Geographically, Europe, including the British Isles, is a large western peninsula of the continent of Asia; and many geographers, when referring to Europe and Asia, speak of the Eurasian continent. But traditionally, Europe is counted as a separate continent, with the Ural and the Caucasus mountains forming the line of demarcation between Europe and Asia. To the south of Europe, Asia has an odd-shaped peninsula jutting westward, which has a large number of political subdivisions. The northern section is taken up by Turkey; to the south of Turkey there are Syria, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and a number of smaller Arab countries. All these are part of Asia. Traditionally, the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean is also considered to be part of Asia. The Caribbean islands, Central America, and Greenland are considered part of North America.

All Hispanics countries are considered "sisters republics." Our mother nation is Spain. Our ancestors conquered from California to the Patagonia. They lost some of their terrytory after the war in Texas, and they also sold Florida.

Anybody who is born in the New World is considerated an American... since the early colony, we always had problems because of separation of all the differents races... The Nobelity from Europe took the lead of every single country... There are Europeans communities all over the place.

America is unique because of all languages and all the mixes we have. We have convined people from all kinds of races and civilization. Of course the most powerfull people came to North America and to Argentina, some of them to Chile. Want to talk about some history?

Hahaha tell me about not being an American... with an Spaniard, Italian and Native background (some people would call us, REAL AMERICANS), I spent a few years of my life in a French Academy in El Salvador... Played soccer at a national level and having a few coaches from Northern Europe!

You know what really makes us Americans? Our style, our uniquenes, we always proved Europeans wrong in everything we do...

We had Jorge "El Magico" Gonzalez in El Salvador, he was called the "Magic" in Spain, you knew they called him "Americano?" You don't have to be from North America to be called an American dude...

As I said before, you want to find out who plays the best soccer in this world, you do not have to watch European soccer, just go down the South... go to that "continent" called South America... you'll find out what I'm saying. Or maybe in our "own continent" we HAVE THE FATHER OF THE BIKE KICK, HUGO SANCHEZ.

Yeah my Dad is a lawyer, his grandfather found an entired town in El Salvador, they used to own an Hacienda, and a lot of his family has big influences in the governenmt in the church... WANT TO PLAY SMART WITH ME?

Ok dude, just chill and learn some.

Feno, you're just incredible. You don't even attempt to answer any questions or prove people wrong in the points that they make, rather, you just attempt to tell everyone how you are better then them.

You're an idiot! South America is a completely separate continent from North America. How the hell could you pass High School without knowing this? Please challenge me to a game, I would LOVE to tear you apart on the field. It would be my ultimate pleasure after the number of times you have ripped Europeans. Being a European, I would gladly make you look foolish.

The thing I love most about your posts, however, is how much you contradict yourself. You start off saying that your mother nation is Spain, and usually you are faithful to your mother and are taught by your mother. However, at the end of your post, you say, and I quote, "we always proved Europeans wrong in everything we do." Doesn't seem like if you really considered Spain your mother nation you would always be proving her wrong, does it?

Fenomeno, you said that Real Madrid and Barcelona are the top clubs in Europe and among the best in the world. EXPLAIN to us why neither of these "top clubs in Europe" didn't even make it to the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Further, also EXPLAIN how two English clubs made it to the semifinals and Liverpool won the Champions League.

Fenomeno, don't try to pull a "watch a La Garrincha or Jorge whatever video and they'll show you futbol". EXPLAIN why the Champions League turned out the way it did.

You know I always like to be nice to everybody just because there is not point of hating people. Well I like some respect and if you don't respect me, or my comments, certainly you're not going to get anything nice back!

When I say something, is because I know, if I don't know, I just listen to what people have to say.

I've been around... I even have a Coach License type D that I got in here, in the United States.

I love good soccer man, "Fantasy Soccer," I love South American soccer, sorry if that hurts your feelings. I told you, I grew up watching the "magic" of Jorge Gonzalez.

"Give respect for respect to" 50 Cent

I beat Irmo, my brother did, South Aiken is the State Champ, but you know what?

IRMO IS THE BEST IN THE STATE.

Just because I didn't go to Irmo, or because I played some real "battles" againts them or because they're too cocky, that does not mean I'm not going to recognize they have the BEST SOCCER PROGRAM IN THE STATE, WITH THE BEST COACH.

I mean, you know they have won the state so many times, they have pride and they play some good futbol. That other black dude from South Aiken, he is got some "Southamerican" moves, he is very impresive. I was impresed in the state final the way he played, his name is Jamal or something and he is very young too.

What I mean is that if I say Madrid is the best, is because they are, 9 Champions Leagues speak for itself. If I said South Americans play the best soccer in the planet is because they do.

Alrigh man, just stop the hating thing and talk about some soccer.

Take it easy.

The way you tear people apart... I mean they should have never given you a coaching license. I think you try too hard to impress. If you are an adult and coach I hope you are not in this state!

I can't find anything other than supposedly the kidnappers contacted Cruz Azul Management back on the 27th.
Interestingly the Cruz Azul website has nothing on the situation.
Apparently the Mexican police believe it is the work of a known group of kidnappers as their current behavior and contacts suggests.

a history lession is seriously due. spain came over and claimed the land of florida. britain claimed the east coast and the french claimed almost all of the midwest. spain had one land claim and to call them true americans is really ignorant. Jamal gethers is has already signed a contract to go to play in europe after he finishes his college career. his moves do not originate from south america and saying so just proves everyone right.....you talk big but walk small. actually brush up on your english, history, and tons of soccer before you reply again to the post. and hopefully the moderator of this post will pick up on our pleas to ban fenemeno. i move to ban him. second motion is needed to vote so someone do it

oh my god dude, english? i'll give you that but latinamerica history? are you serious, you know more history of latinamerican that a latino? futbol? i can guarantee you that most of the moves comes from Latin America, just for a fact that little "snake" that ronaldinho does was inveted by Jorge Gonzales... the bike kick was in Chile and so and so... "fantasy" soccer is created in the street of latin america man, sorry, better luck next time.

fenomeno, where did you come from? you haven't been on here in about a month!

I personally would like to keep fenomeno on the forums.
My reasoning:
1. If I am having a bad day and feeling down, i get on here, read an idiotic reply from fenomeno, and suddenly my day is better.
2. It is hilarious to see how off-topic he can get. You could say soccer or futbol is an awesome sport, and fenomeno can make up a theory to relate that post to something about race, and how everyone is trying to get rid of hispanics in america.
3. It is also hilarious how he contradicts himself. He'll say something, someone will call him out on it, and he will say something totally different on his own statement.

For these reasons, i vote to keep fenomeno, but i wouldn't be too sad to see him go!

keep up the good posts fenomeno!

For the firs dude, want to know why Real Madrid is so big... why don't you find out! www.realmadrid.com

Ronaldinho: Fifa player of the year.
Eto: African Player of the year.
Messy: MVP of the the u20 world champ.

You know Cheelsea got lucky last year! You know it!

Moves? That will be a good homework for you, who's got the hottest moves?

"My Hero was always Enzo Franchescoli, the Prince of soccer." Zinedine Zidane.

How ironic that the most skillfull European player ever has a Southamerican as a hero!

Fenomeno, first of all, show me where you got that Zidane quote from.

Second of all, I don't want to look at websites to find out that Real Madrid is big, I want to look at the "numbers". Madrid lost to Juventus in the round of sixteen, and didn't make it to the quarterfinals of the Champions League(neither did Barca). Chelsea and Liverpool both made it to the semis, let alone Liverpool becoming Champions of Europe(geography lesson: madrid and barcelona are both in Europe).
