Cruz Azul coach feared kidnapped

MEXICO CITY -- The Argentine coach of the Cruz Azul soccer team was attacked and feared kidnapped Tuesday as he left a practice facility on the Mexican capital's southern outskirts.
Ruben Omar Romano, 47, was forced from his gray BMW van by five armed assailants who swarmed the area in several vehicles as he left the team's La Noria sports complex. Mexico City police said they could not confirm Romano had been abducted, but they did not know where he was. Cruz Azul vice president Alfredo Alvarez told a local radio station that five men forced the coach into a vehicle and drove away.

Outside the practice facility, police recovered Romano's vehicle, which had one of its back windows shot out and was pressed against a concrete wall. Two sport utility vehicles, which investigators said may have been used by the assailants, were found a short distance away.


Romano's father, Jose, who lives in Guadalajara, Mexico's second-largest city, said he had not been contacted with ransom demands, but that he feared for his son's safety. He wept while speaking to Mexican newspapers and television stations late Tuesday.

"I would like to ask the people who have him to be understanding with him, because Ruben is a very good person, a good son, a good father," Jose Romano was quoted in Mexico City's Reforma newspaper. "Please return him as he is, please don't hurt him."

Romano took over a struggling Cruz Azul in December 2004 and guided the squad to a speedy turnaround that included several weeks in first place of the Mexican League. Romano's team was eliminated by another Mexico City powerhouse, America, the eventual champion, in the playoffs.

I served in the military in Britain for 12 years and carried out operations on every continent and believe me, murderers are murderers and it has nothing to do with poverty or exploitation of anybody, by anybody. That is an argument made by people to justify the murder of innocents in the name of some "cause". It is nonsense.

every part of the world has their own players which they will argue would be among the best. Your list points to players from Latin America (very few Central American ....HMMMM!) that have made an impact worldwide. (By the way you forgot Zico , Jair, Jairzhino, Carlos Alberto, Cubillas, Salas, etc. by the way I would personally place the 1970 Brazil team against anyone today) point is that the majority of the names are in the past.
The newer guys all play or have played in Europe where they got the recognition.... Why? because of money and Europe has the money and the Latin teams want that money and therefore sell the player. (I can remember when the argentinian and brazilian leagues where considered as the only places for latinos to play.)

In Europe the strengths of the leagues cycles from place to place. Sometimes, it is the premier league, then is the Bundesliga or Serie A or La Liga.
In any case the game is being played and played well by many players from all over. You may not like a certain style but that is all. To say that players like Platini, Beckenbauer, Van Basten, Maldini, Baggio, Raul, Stoichkov, Klinsman, Eusebio, Zidane, Figo, etc are not able to play and play well in Latin teams would only make you ignorant.

The thing is, Feno, that you don't even give anyone else a chance. Everything that is from South America is automatically the best, which is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Yes, the best player ever came from South America, I will give you that, but many of the greats in history have come from Europe, and if you're going to try to deny this, you obviously have no knowledge of and/or respect for soccer. My friend fenomeno.... You obviously do not know your South American Spanish as you would have probably known by the sentence, which part of South America I am from. I played many years and have coached many years, so I do nknow of what I speak a little. To say the same as one of the other posts, you preach about players from a continent you do not even belong to. So why would'nt someone else be able to do the same.

I actually told Fenomeno to come out and play with a group i normally play with..his little brother plays with us a lot and very good...but Fenomeno had hurt his ankle and isn't fit to play right now...i do know that his brother is very skilled.

All Hispanics countries are considered "sisters republics." Our mother nation is Spain. Our ancestors conquered from California to the Patagonia. They lost some of their terrytory after the war in Texas, and they also sold Florida.

EXPLAIN to us why neither of these "top clubs in Europe" didn't even make it to the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Further, also EXPLAIN how two English clubs made it to the semifinals and Liverpool won the Champions League.

I was impresed in the state final the way he played, his name is Jamal or something and he is very young too.

What I mean is that if I say Madrid is the best, is because they are, 9 Champions Leagues speak for itself. If I said South Americans play the best soccer in the planet is because they do.

I can't find anything other than supposedly the kidnappers contacted Cruz Azul Management back on the 27th.
Interestingly the Cruz Azul website has nothing on the situation.
Apparently the Mexican police believe it is the work of a known group of kidnappers as their current behavior and contacts suggests.

I personally would like to keep fenomeno on the forums.
My reasoning:
1. If I am having a bad day and feeling down, i get on here, read an idiotic reply from fenomeno, and suddenly my day is better.
2. It is hilarious to see how off-topic he can get. You could say soccer or futbol is an awesome sport, and fenomeno can make up a theory to relate that post to something about race, and how everyone is trying to get rid of hispanics in america.
3. It is also hilarious how he contradicts himself. He'll say something, someone will call him out on it, and he will say something totally different on his own statement.

For these reasons, i vote to keep fenomeno, but i wouldn't be too sad to see him go!

Fenomeno, first of all, show me where you got that Zidane quote from.

Second of all, I don't want to look at websites to find out that Real Madrid is big, I want to look at the "numbers". Madrid lost to Juventus in the round of sixteen, and didn't make it to the quarterfinals of the Champions League(neither did Barca). Chelsea and Liverpool both made it to the semis, let alone Liverpool becoming Champions of Europe(geography lesson: madrid and barcelona are both in Europe).
