I know that the person that portrays Chief Illiniwek has to go learn the traditional Indian dances at a reservation. It is not a traditional mascot as we may know them, but more of a respect toward the Indian heritage. I personally don’t see how someone could be offended by this. Are they offended by the portrayal of their own culture? I just don’t get it. I personally think that it is fairly respectful the way that the U of I does their bit with Chief Illiniwek. What power does the NCAA really have over such things? The next thing we know, The Fighting Irish will no longer exist, the Vikings, the Celtics, the Braves, the Redskins, the Redman, the Indians, etc…etc…etc… Why can’t people get over themselves, and accept the names for just that, names. Pretty soon you are going to have PETA going on the offensive against the Jaguars and the Panthers and say that they are bad images for those animals. The Packers may go away because people that work in a meat packing plant may be offended that a team does not reflect them accurately. Pretty soon we will have teams that are just known by numbers. “Team 12 will play team 35 today in a battle that will be tremendous….” Won’t that just be fun?
