The first annual Fort Mill Invitational Girls Soccer Tournament kicks-off on March 16 at the beautiful new Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex in Rock Hill. This competitive three-day event features fifteen of the best high school varsity girl’s soccer teams from both North and South Carolina.

All of the matches played in Rock Hill will be held on the two state-of-the-art synthetic turf fields, which feature grandstand seating as well as stadium lighting. This inaugural event was able to attract the following teams from South Carolina: Fort Mill, Irmo, Riverside, James Island, Wando, Lexington, Spring Valley and Northwestern. Participating schools from North Carolina are Charlotte Catholic, Butler, Lake Norman, Cardinal Gibbons, JT Hoggard, RJ Reynolds and Forsyth Country Day.

Riverside is the defending South Carolina 3A state champion and Lexington, Irmo and Wando all reached the 2006 4A state semi-finals.

Should players and coaches be worried about playing on synthetic turf?

Didn't you read? Its "state-of-the-art"!!! That means that there is no way anything bad could ever, ever happen. Seriously, though, people do get "Astro turf" and synthetic mixed up. Astro = old, bad brand. The new stuff is at Clemson's practice fields, and all the northern schools stadiums.

It's the new stuff....you know, when you take your soccer socks off and all those little black rubber pieces end up all over the laundry room floor......

I don't know about the games on the 16th and 17th since I don't know anything about a lot of those teams, but it looks like the 18th is going to have some really competitive games........

Yes, I think all of those teams should be toward the upper part of the rankings by mid-March. Everyone will have their basketball players back in form, the kinks ironed out, and hopefully not too many injuries. Should be some great matches.

Basketball players??? The North-South and North Carolina-South Carolina high school basketball all-star games are taking place March 17th at Winthrop Coliseum. I don't know who will be involved, but it provides a nice distraction for those of us who will be in town for soccer anyway!

H66,

No need for a hotel . . . Mom lives in Fort Mill, and a brother in Clover.
