The players are merely human beings, just like the coaches and the referees. Twelve players got on the field and a penalty was assessed according to the rules. Were mistakes made in "allowing" this to happen - yes! So what! You can go back through all of the close games played in all of the sports that the SCHSL sponsors and find mistakes. Do all of those players deserve an accurate detailing of the events? I don't think so. Welcome to the HUMAN drama that is SPORT kids. If you're paying attention you just might find that it mirrors life pretty closely.
Someone starts a thread calling these events a "disaster" - NOT EVEN CLOSE!!! It was another drama in an activity (sports) that is filled with drama. So, a group of rich, suburban kids from the Charleston area beats another group of rich, suburban kids from the Columbia area and the newspapers see an opportunity to generate a few more hits for their websites and advertisers - God bless a market-based economy! The players/fans/parents of these teams have access to computers and the Internet, and are willing to tell the whole world (mostly anonymously, mind you) just exactly "how it is", or at least should be. A faceless/nameless Internet forum will elicit all kinds of "courageous" opinions.
A phenomenal soccer game was played between two very evenly matched teams. Throughout that game numerous mistakes were made by all of the humans involved, not unlike any other soccer game played the entire past high school season. On that night, one of those teams was able to score and the other was not. Wando 1, Lexington 0.
