RHS did not respond to the 2007 post tourney questionnaire and evidently has elected not to return in 2008. The Warriors were invited to defend the '07 title. I believe Riverside is planning on hosting its own tournament next spring.

Once again RHS is looking in from the outside when it comes to the Palmetto Cup. Last year RHS was not in the initial field because they didn't have a coach when they were putting the tourney together. A late withdrawal after Finotti was named coach allowed RHS to get in and they end up winning the thing. Finotti told the RHS players and parents at the start of the season that RHS would have their own tournament next year so RHS didn't apply. Then Finotti leaves and the team is left without participating in the Palmetto Cup and no tournament of their own.

The Palmetto Cup is pleased to announce that 2007 Class 2A Runner-Up Emerald will be the 16th and final team in the 2008 Palmetto Cup.
Thanks to the Emerald administration and former coach Brad Nickles for making this happen. This will be the Vikings first appearance in the Palmetto Cup.

Dobyns-Bennett of Kingsport, TN has replaced Morristown West-TN. The coach, Shane Calvert, has moved from MW to D-B. The Indians were 13-4-2 overall in 2007 and reached the State Sectionals where D-B lost to eventual Class 3A State Runner-Up, Bearden.

Socastee wasn't invited due to North Myrtle Beach having already been issued an invitation extended to the Palmetto Cup for several years.
The Braves have played in the PC five times and posted an 8-9-1 mark, while the Chiefs have never participated in the PC.

10/8/07 @ 7:30 p.m. *** MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT *** Cullman High School of Alabama has had to withdraw from the 2008 Palmetto Cup due to a Senior Prom being held on Friday, March 29. Therefore, we are looking for one team to fill that void. There will be no rearranging of the schedule so the team that joins will be placed in Group B along with T.L. Hanna, North Myrtle Beach, and Wando -- no concessions. We would prefer that no teams from any of those regions (1-4A, 6-3A, and 7-4A) apply because we don't want multiple matches for the teams already competing in the tourney. If your team is interested in filling this spot, please contact Tournament Director Kyle Heise at kyle@scsoccer.com. Below are the teams committed to the 2008 Palmetto Cup: Airport -- 3A Second Round, 8-13 PC = 0-8 (0.0%), Last appearance '07 Bishop England -- #1, 2A State Champions, 22-5 PC = 10-4-1 (70.0%), 1 Championship ('02), Last appearance '05 Brookland-Cayce -- #9, 3A Second Round, 13-11-2 PC = 27-15-11 (61.3%), 2 Championships ('93, '97), Last appearance '07 Cardinal Newman -- #2, SCISA 3A Finals, 21-3 PC = 0-4 (0.0%), Last appearance '00 Dobyns-Bennett-TN --3A, State Sectionals, 13-4-2 PC = First appearance Dutch Fork -- #6, 4A Second Round, 15-6-1 PC = 18-16-7 (52.4%), Last appearance '07 Eastside -- #5, 3A Quarterfinals, 19-5-0 PC = 0-3-1 (12.5%), Last appearance '03 Emerald -- #2, 2A Finals, 17-5-0 PC = First appearance Farragut-TN -- #1, 3A State Champions, 19-3-5 PC = 6-2-1 (72.2%), Last appearance '07 T.L. Thanks to Kempsville HS of Virginia Beach, VA for committing to the 2008 Palmetto Cup. The Chiefs, coached by Adam Schultz, will be making their second appearance at the Palmetto Cup as Kempsville posted a 3-0-1 record and third place finish in 2000.
KHS will face Wando, North Myrtle Beach, and T.L. Hanna as members of Group B next March.

3/20/08 Emerald boys rock Bulldogshttp://www.indexjournal.com/articles/2008/03/20/sports/sports01.txtKevin Fiorenzo, The Index-Journal (Greenwood, SC)Against an inferior team, the concern for coaches is always whether their team will drop its standard of play. Fortunately for the Emerald High School boys soccer team, that didn’t happen Thursday night. The Vikings gave a forceful demonstration for why they are undefeated so far this season, routing Newberry 15-0 at Frank Hill Stadium. Walter Nunez led Emerald (9-0 overall, 4-0 Region 3-AA) with four goals and three assists, while Nick Shahan and Joseph Taylor scored twice. Taylor and J.C. Spearman also each had two assists. Though Emerald had six goals in the first half, three coming in a 10-minute span, the Vikings didn’t let up, tacking on nine more in the final 40 minutes. “I think against a team like this, it’s really doing the simple things right and I think we did that today,” Emerald assistant coach Colin Kent said. “Maybe a little bit of a slow start, but as soon as we got into the flow of things I thought we showed our quality. “It wasn’t like we dropped down to their level, we kept our level of play. It’s always a worry as a coach when you play lesser teams, that you’ll play to their standard, and I think we kept away from that.” Through the beginning of the first half, Kent and Emerald coach Brock Scott opted to take a hands off approach and the Vikings responded with four goals, two by Nunez. Kent said he was pleased by the team’s effort to not try to do too much offensively. “I think for the first 20 minutes, coach Scott and I just let the guys play,” Kent said. “We didn’t say a word. We let them see how they could play without being coached. “They did OK. They were a little bit slow to start with as you saw in the game, but as it progressed, they got more confident. They started playing their game instead of trying to dribble through 20 players and score.” The Vikings got off to a slow start again in the second half and didn’t score their first goal of the period until the 12th minute, on Hunter Riddle’s unassisted score. Defensively, Emerald struggled very little and managed to keep the ball on its end of the field for much of the game. Charlie Lambour had one save in the net for the Vikings, while the Bulldogs made no scoring attempts on backup goalkeeper Shahan in the second half. With a tough stretch of games coming up next week in the Palmetto Cup, Thursday’s game was good precursor for the upcoming slate where the Vikings will be looking to maintain their unbeaten record.
“It gets everyone relaxed for those bigger games,” Kent said. “We’ve got a big task ahead of us next week, some really tough games, and I think the boys are ready. They’ve worked hard in practice and they’re ready to go.”

Anyone think Farragut gets beat 10-1? That was quite a final two years back.
Why would they get beat that bad again? I think that is their worst lost in the longest time.
I am interested to see how they do down there. It seems as though they got a tough draw. I haven't really looked at the other groups other than Dobyns-Bennetts though. I am sure some other Tennessee soccer fans are interested as well.

That was an insane game. Who would r of that Farragut would get beat 10-1! Anyways, it won't happen again for while. They will be a competitive team once again in the tournament. I don't think they will win it, but they will do well.

Indian Soccer Team Wins 10-0 in South Carolina TriCitiesSports.com
CLINTON, S.C. -- Sophomore David Geno had a hat trick and then some Monday, booting four goals to key Dobyns-Bennett's soccer team to a 10-0 victory over Clinton on Monday.
The game was a warmup for D-B for play in the Palmetto Cup, which begins in Columbia, S.C., on Wednesday. The Indians will play Dutch Fork on Wednesday, Bishop English on Thursday and Brookland Cayce on Friday and then play an opponent to be named on Saturday.
Knox Farragut is among the teams playing in the tournament.
In addition to Geno's four goals, Ray Menya had two, Craig Mitcham had a goal and two assists, Danny Clark had a goal and an assist, Chase Givens and Bryce Herlong one goal each and Colton Clark three assists. Tim Eastridge also had an assist as D-B improved to 4-0.
A total of 28 players saw action for the Indians with each playing at least 10 minutes.

16th Palmetto Cup soccer tournament opens Wednesday at B-C, Airport John Devlin, The State - MidlandsPreps.com
From humble beginnings in 1993, the Palmetto Cup has grown into one of the top in-season boys soccer tournaments in the Southeast. Four teams made up the inaugural field, including local entries Brookland-Cayce, the host school, and Dutch Fork, which was then in its second year as a varsity program. The event was a four-match affair at Lexington District Two Stadium at Airport.
The 16th edition of the spring soccer classic, which begins Wednesday at Airport’s Eagle Stadium and “The Cage” on the Brookland-Cayce campus, features 16 teams and 33 matches though the championship showdown Saturday at The Cage.
The tournament has had a variety of names through the years, beginning with the Brookland-Cayce Classic. It eventually was dubbed the Palmetto Cup in 2002 to reflect the diversity of the field, which has increasingly been attractive to out-of-state teams from as far away as Alaska and Wyoming.
About the only thing the Palmetto Cup has not had in recent years is a Midlands champion. That could all change this season with unbeaten, Class 4A defending state champion Spring Valley in the field. The Vikings, in fact, were the last Midlands team to win the tournament title (2003), which was also the last year an area team even advanced to the tournament finale. Spring Valley went 2-2 at the Cup last year, finishing in 10th place.
Riverside beat Christian Brothers (TN) for the championship last season, and neither team is entered in 2008.
Four out-of-state teams are entered this season, including familiar Norman North (OK), which will be making its sixth Cup visit since 2000. Norman North has the highest tournament winning percentage on the books amongst teams that have made more than one Cup appearance (16-4-2, .722) and is the all-time leader in championships with three titles in five tries.
Dobyns-Bennett and Farragut from Tennessee and Kempsville, VA are the other out-of-state teams on hand. This will be the third straight appearance for Farragut and the first in eight years for Kempsville.
Dobyns-Bennett, Emerald (ranked No. 2 in Class 2A) and North Myrtle Beach (No. 5 in 3A) are the three teams making their Cup debuts.
The field also features Lexington (No. 2 in 4A), Dutch Fork (No. 15 in 4A), Wando (No. 7 in 4A), Eastside (No. 6 in 3A), Brookland-Cayce (No. 8 in 3A), Bishop England (No. 1 in 2A) and Cardinal Newman (No. 3 in SCISA).
PALMETTO CUP NOTES Bishop England, which won a Cup championship in 2002, is returning for the first time since 2005 ... Wando is seventh on the all-time winning percentage list (10-4-2, .688) but has never finished higher that fifth place ... Lexington is 10-10-4 in six previous Cup appearances, never placing higher than fifth place ... Spring Valley’s all-time Cup mark is 14-10-3 ... Only host Brookland-Cayce has played in more tournament matches than Dutch Fork ... The Silver Foxes are 18-16-7 in 12 appearances, and have finished second three times ... B-C has a 27-15-11 tournament record and two championships, the last coming in 1997 ... Cardinal Newman is back for the first time since going 0-4 in its 2000 tournament debut.

I'm going to quite giving interviews if I keep getting mis-quoted! Gotta love the newspapers!

You know....???? I get up this morning and read the State newspaper ,and said to myself... This Akilah Nelson reporter apparently only knows the I26 corridor because if it is Irmo, Dutch Fork or BC she is allover it , everyone else forget it. Then I read the Spartanburg link above and see that it is not just the State it is everyone...... apparently west of I26 in the SC actually belongs to Ga.... (insert picture of Jack nicholson in the courtroom in "A few good men"?) "YOU WANT THE TRUTH?!! YOU WANT THE TRUTH?!!!! YOU CAN"T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!! " (spit flying out of mouth) BTW SSM - I hear that Jeff Donham is coming to SC....

So, of the teams I was able to watch, Spring Valley looked to be extremely strong. I didnt get to see Farragut. BC and Bishop England looked average. Cardinal Newman played well, but I dont think they can hang with the big boys. Airport, well, looked like Airport...horrible. Eastside looked good against Lexingtion.
I say Spring Valley rolls through their group, as well as Farragut. I look forward to seeing the rest play.
Great job on putting together another solid tournament.

PER PALMETTO CUP TOURNAMENT RULES & GUIDELINES
The GROUP winner/seedings for the fourth match will be determined according to a points system: 6 points for a win; 3 points for a tie; 1 point for every goal up to three; 1 point for a shutout; 0 points for a loss; -1 point for an accumulated red card (two yellow cards); -2 points for a straight red card 10 points maximum for each match
*** Dobyns-Bennett senior Colton Clark received cautions at the 31:15 and 71:47 marks of the match for "an accumulated red card", thus the point deducted from their total.

Trying to get a wireless connection at The Cage is hit-and-miss at best especially since Lexington School District Two is doing server maintenance this week -- that's why I didn't have any more updates after 5 p.m., yesterday. Dave Easley is trying to establish a connection at Eagle Stadium today -- I'll keep plugging away at The Cage, but as of 12 noon, it looks like no access at BCHS.

What is the impetus for using this scoring system as opposed to a FIFA oriented style?

So you don't think DB will beat wando? I'm thinking DB will come out and beat wando 2-0 in the semis. They have a VERY talented team... with David Geno, Ray Menya, Matt Merrow (who's injured), Mitch Gardner, and of course their sweeper... Bryce Herlong. They are the team to beat this year. DB will get into the final.

Spring Valley is the team to beat in this tournament, not D-B. I think that is very apparent if you have watched both teams play.

DB just beat DF and shots were about equal and DF is not too good. DB tied an average BE team.

Anyhave final on Lexington Emerald game? Also an explanation on rules, please. With a game max of 10 points per game....does that mean, for example, that Farragut's 6-0 win over Emerald would max them at 10 points for that game(6 for win; 1 for tie, but only 3 for goals)?

6 for Win 1 for shut-out 3 for goals equals...10 PER GAME! Details are earlier in this thread.

If, at the completion of group play, a tie in the standings exists in determining the group champion, the following criteria shall be used to determine the champion: (1) Head-to-head competition; (2) Goal differential; (3) Goals against; (4) Goals for; (5) Penalty Kick Shootout.

That's 10 points. 3-0 is all they needed to get the full 10 points. I wouldn't read anything else into it.

AHS held their own in that match. 1 nil at half and the 3rd goal was put in with only about 3 minutes left.

The only reason DB tied with Bishop England is the fact that they were not playing their forward. David Geno would've changed that game in a heartbeat. Can't wait till later on today when they take on the hosts.

Indeed, Farragut beat Lexington 2-1 with an acrobatic beatiful save by the Farragut goalkeeper as time expired to preserve the win

Disappointing I am sure for Farragut to not advance to the semis. Does this mean Farragut will play Cardinal Newman tomorrow? Woulda been nice to see Farragut play SV again. I think it would have been a battle of #1s from different states.

Wow, what a great tournament. Congratulations to Coach Heise and the Bearcat staff on putting together another solid tournament. It was an excellent week of soccer.
My thoughts:
biggest suprise...Farragut not making the semis, and the outstanding play of Cardinal Newman. Great job Cardinals.
biggest disappointment...Lexington not having a better showing, and the horrible officiating. Of the officials that I was able to see, Barry Lee was by far the best, and nobody else was even close. Its like they dont even care about keeping the games in control.
All in all, great weather, great teams, great games made for another wonderful Palmetto Cup.
Congratulations Bearcats.

??? -- There will be an all-tournament team posted as soon as all emails are received from each team's respective coach.
Brookland-Cayce High School would like to thank all of the teams and coaches that participated in the 16th Palmetto Cup! The tourney was a huge success and for the most part (with the exception of the final) we had very good weather.
A special thanks of gratitude to our amazing volunteers -- some who take 3-5 days of annual vacation -- to make this tourney a reality.
We enjoy hosting the Palmetto Cup and will aim to keep the standard high in the future! Congratulations to Spring Valley on the tourney title and Bishop England on the Runner-Up finish.

Kevin/Kyle,
A truly amazing tournament. Quality. In the four days we played, we had not one hold up or delay. Can't thank you enough for inviting us. What an awesome time!
Thanks to Mr. Heise and David Easley for all they did at AHS! You made a second rate enviorment(due to thing out of the Heises control) first class. Now why wasn't the field lined and cut like the cage again?
Also what a job by the bearcat ball boys. Man they worked their butts off.
thanks again.

Coach Eudy & The Cardinal Newman Team:
Congratulations on a great run in the Palmetto Cup! It makes me very, very proud to see head coach Will Eudy and assistants' Benjie Poston, David Faulkenberry, and Andrew Richardson vaulting the Cardinals to the pinnacle of South Carolina soccer.
These coaches work tirelessly to make CN a top soccer program in SCISA and across the state, and I am very fortunate to have coached/worked with them in their earlier years and see them mature into fantastic coaches! They are certainly great people and Cardinal Newman is fortunate to have them directing their soccer program!

Just more thanks for a great tournament; I was impressed by the stats on number of close games historically, and that continued this year, showing the quality of teams and soccer played is very high - great week!

I don't mean this as being too critical but I watched Emerald on the first day and knew they were in trouble. It's only the second time I've seen them play (other time was 3-4 years ago in the 2A Finals). Those types of teams are fine amongst themselves but really have to step up in class against these other teams. It was fitting that they got a tie against Airport, I guess. Good tournament once again and it's time the Heises got Dreher or Flora involved again.
50th for a reason!

In defense to Emerald...they were in the group of death...they were also beating lexington 1-0 at half until a player got injured and any on other day emerald would beat Airport 5-0

that player is actually a very good friend of mine, but he would not have made a 4 goal differnce. and emerald was lucky to be up 1-0 at half
one can be beaten, two can defend themselves, but a a strand of three is not easily defeated

Rivals.com FAB 50 http://studentsportssoccer.rivals.com/viewrankhs.asp?ra_key=383StudentSportsSoccer.com #1 Spring Valley - With the Palmetto Cup title in hand, a Class 4A state crown will give Spring Valley the national No. 1 ranking for the spring. #8 Farragut (TN) - Farragut shut out McMinn County and Christian Academy of Knoxville last week. #32 Northwestern #34 Wando #42 Eastside #47 Irmo http://studentsportssoccer.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=805382Preston Cox and Scott Armbrust each delivered a goal to carry No. 3 Edmond Memorial to a 2-0 victory over No. 13 Jenks in the Oklahoma Class 6A state semifinals. Edmond Memorial will face Norman North in the final at the University of Tulsa. No. 33 Norman North upended No. 18 Union 1-0 in the other semifinal. The state final will have major national ranking implications. A win by Edmond Memorial will secure its place among the nation's elite. A win by Norman North, however, will give added credibility to Southeast soccer since both of Norman North's losses this season were to South Carolina teams at the Palmetto Cup. Below are the reported scores from FAB 50 teams from Tuesday. The FAB 50 scoreboard: Boys No. 1 Spring Valley (S.C.) 1, Fort Dorchester (S.C.) 0 No. 2 Blacksburg (Va.) 6, Salem (Va.) 0 No. 3 Edmond Memorial (Okla.) 2, No. 13 Jenks (Okla.) 0 No. 6 Pope John Paul II (Tenn.) 4, Battleground Academy (Tenn.) 2 No. 15 Lakeside-DeKalb (Ga.) 2, Whitewater (Gaa.) 1 No. 27 Walton (Ga.) 1, No. 28 Brookwood (Ga.) 0 No. 30 Collins Hill (Ga.) 2, East Coweta (Ga.) 1 No. 32 Northwestern (S.C.) 10, Hillcrest (S.C.) 0 No. 33 Norman North (Okla.) 1, No. 18 Union (Okla.) 0 No. 34 Wando (S.C.) 7, Conway (S.C.) 0 No. 46 Walker School (Ga.) 4, Providence Christian (Ga.) 2
