He's played at a high standard for an American player of his day, knows the game and at least talks like an American.
The jargon and lingo used by Max Bretos, Christian Miles and Chris"topher" Sullivan on FSC is repulsive. Meters, football and pitch, to name only a few, are yards, soccer and field. Disgusting!
Let's take another step forward as a soccer country some time and create our own identity instead of that of the English or some other second tier, soccer-playing country.

I just think he always acts cocky when talking about other players. Always hints that he was much better than they are. Plus I can't stand him using the words 'inswinger' and 'outswinger' on every single free kick.

WhatDoesItMatter, I think you are right on key. I think he knows what he is talking about when it comes to soccer, but he always seems to discredit other players and hints that he is better. Take Freddy Adu for example. If you watch him play with Wynalda commentating, Eric always bashes on Adu. It is very annoying having Wynalda commentating.
Who wants to bet he will give some horrid excuse as to why Donovan will be the all-time leading goal scorer in USA national team soccer history?

Yea I have been waiting for that one...
They need to get Balboa doing commentating on ESPN I agree with 95% of the things he says about soccer and that is very rare for me.

Wynalda has been cheering on Donovan for the past year. He is honored that Landon is getting his just reward. He has said so publicly often. What he says elsewhere who really knows. I am surprised that Balboa and Wynalda can be seen as any different. Both will feast on any player who has a lackluster performance. They are both player-commentators so they fill that role perfect. Max Bretos, Christian Miles and Christopher Sullivan I believe try and bring the game on a world level. It can sound disjointed but you gotta agree they do have a passion. I will side with ya on one thing Max does not and never will have the pipes to exclaim "GOOOOOOOOAAALLLLLLLL" Now the matchup of the century in the booth Giorgio Chinaglia, Eric Wynalda and Eric Cantona? Or did I read that in Revelations?

Totally agree here. It's bad enough that most of the people that work in soccer media 1) are almost completely ignorant to the game 2) are complete stiffs.
I have to say that I probably wouldn't like Wynalda personally, but he has the type of personality that you can't help but admire a little. No matter how foolish or full of himself, his confidence, passion, and animation are inspiring.
Case in point: His comments about Jim Rome.
I really loathe Jim Rome. Though I don't condone Wynalda's attitude towards alcohol - who here isn't going to like a guy that tried to put one of those carbon-copy ESPN guys in their place?
The stigma associated with soccer in America is frustrating at best and even if Wynalda is overly critical of players - I really believe he wants the best for the game as a whole here in the States.

I would like Wynalda if and only if Bruce Arena walked up to him and delivered four fingers and a thumb to his face, all the while taking it gracefully and admitting "I can see where I deserved that."
He reminds me of Hugo Sanchez. I can see where he wants more for America, but at some point you have to be accountable for what you say.
Bruce, if you're reading this, I promise to post your bail if you would just do it...
Eric, if you're reading this, Joe Max Moore is your daddy.

When Wynalda and Arena were doing commentary together a few months ago - that was GOLD.

Jack, I could feel the tension when they were doing that!
Wynalda said "I want to see his head rolling down the street!"
I would find it hard to restrain myself sitting next to someone who ordered my decapitation.
To Eric's defense, Bruce did play conservative. We go lights out with 3-4-3's and 4-3-3's in the CONCA, but freeze up like Beasley on a 1 v 1 when we get to European competition.

Hey speaking of announcers, I have one you would love Whatdoesitmatter. On the U20 WC the main announcer sounds like Stewie Griffin. Thought you might get a kick out of that.

Balboa sucks! He is an idiot. Also, Arena is so bad at speaking, and Shep Messing is the worst out of them all. At least Wynalda is honest about his opinions of players. He does not try to build them up, but try to show them for what they are. Also, FSC needs new analysts. Christopher Sullivan always tries to talk like he is of hispanic descent, but he grew up in SoCal. Also, Bretos is a toolshed and never should be announcing a game.

SoCal, Mexico, what's the difference! JK Give me Balboa, his son, his grandson, and his half brother Ricardo over Wynalda any day of the week!

But you had to love his comment after Hopkins talked with Arena before the start of the second half. Something like,"I hope that wasn't his halftime speech against Ghana".
