HMMMM!

original grouping

GROUP A: Academic Magnet, Fort Mill, Lexington, Wando
GROUP B: Bishop England, Fort Dorchester, Myrtle Beach, Spring Valley
GROUP C: Brookland-Cayce, James Island, Pinewood Prep, Summerville

Moved Lexington from A to B, Ft D from B to C and Spring Valley from B to A, Summerville from C to B...

Friday schedule ...fair... local teams play early providing travel time for others

Saturday.... any reason why field 1 and 3 are not used? You could have played all teams from a group at the same time giving equal breaks to all. As it is Lex, SV and FD get the short end of the stick.

What's now above is actually the original grouping. What was up yesterday was, I think, in error. Looks like a nice field and should be another great tournament.
Perhaps with staggering the games as they are, teams and coaches will be able to see more teams play. Also, I'm sure availability of referees is the real reason.

Ed is correct. The "original" grouping is listed above. The other was an error. The times have been set in the same pattern for 10 years now.

I do not disagree that the groups make for a good field add to that the complex, and you have the best pre-season tourney in SC...
Times on the other hand, not arguing about the time itself just the short break. By adding one field you can have aal teams in one group play at the same time
i.e. 9 Am 4 fields all teams in Group A and B play
10:30 2 fields all teams in group C play
2:30PM 4 fields all teams in group a and B play
4PM 2 fields all teams in group C play

referees... per the tournament you would need 3 crews (4 games) at a given time. per the one above you would need 4 crews and evry crew gets 3 games (unless my math is wrong). Fresher refs may be a benefit...of course if you cannot get a 4 crews it does not matter

I am not sure what coaches will view what games. If we are talking college coaches then you still have games at the same time from different groups so no benefit there, if you are talking HS coaches scouting the other teams in the group....maybe... it is a preseason tournament however...

Nevertheless this would be a great weekend of soccer.

The best preseason tourney in South Carolina takes place at Spring Valley.....and it involves the ladies!

futbol, can Fort Mill win a game in the CSC tournament? That looks like a pretty tough group.

IMO, SV will come out of the group... Wando lost a lot of players this past year... Also Lundy junior will be coming back from knee injury, Academic magnet is a mystery to me. I would guess that FM gets one win.

In theory...Group B is the toughest group. Mb depends what they lost last year, Summerville was rising, Lexington lost some key players, BE is always strong.

Group C would appear to be the weakest... PP should come out of that group.

My picks to win the groups are the Columbia schools. Spring Valley or Lexington will probably win AAAA and B-C returns a bunch of kids that lost to Socastee in the play-offs. Eastside will beat B-C or Socastee in the AAA championship.

Looking at the Massey Ratings for 2007, here is a breakdown of the CSC field for 2008. The rating is in parentheses.

Group A (12.25 avg): Academic Magnet (20), Fort Mill (18), Spring Valley (3), Wando (8)

Group B (13.75 avg): Bishop England (10), Lexington (4), Myrtle Beach (24), Summerville (17)

Group C (27 avg): Brookland-Cayce (32), Fort Dorchester (26), James Island (38), Pinewood Prep (12)

Without question, Group A is the most stout and Group B is not far behind. Group C is the most average, but does have the defending SCISA state champs from Pinewood Prep.

Should be another exciting weekend of soccer! Can't wait for it to get kicked off!

I wanted to update the website this morning, but the ISP is still trying to get some issues resolved so I thought I would post this contribution from Bill Tooley in this thread.

Fort Mill Ready for the Carolina Classic

Fort Mill High School boys head coach Lloyd Chalker is a true “glass half-full” optimist. He gets visibly excited when he thinks about his Yellow Jackets’ prospects for the 2008 season.

“We’re young but the work ethic has been better than ever. I’m very impressed with the team’s attitude. We have great team speed and we are strong in the back, with very solid goalkeeping”.

Chalker, in his third season at the helm, led Fort Mill to a 15-8-1 record in 2007 and a #12 final ranking in 4A. Last year the Yellow Jackets finished 2-2 in the Carolina Classic. This year, Fort Mill will be hard pressed to win two games in the Mt. Pleasant preseason tournament which kicks-off the boys spring season. Chalker’s squad has weekend dates with #1 (4A) Spring Valley, #7 (4A) Wando, and #2 (1A) Academic Magnet.

Chalker’s assistant coach, Mike Cahill, welcomes the challenge. “I’m looking for the team to show well. Like everyone else, we’re going to Mt. Pleasant to find out what we got, and how we are going to compete for the rest of the year”.

Fort Mill returns seniors Eric and Ryan Fielden. Eric was All-Region 3 in 2008 and his twin brother Ryan exhibits tremendous pace, evident by his ninth place finish in last fall’s SCHSL Cross Country 4A State Championship meet. The midfield will be anchored by junior Tyler Vukoder, a member of the highly-successful Discoveries ’90 club team.

Defensively the Yellow Jackets will feature senior Matt Balint, junior Christian Datz, sophomore Austin Chalker and freshman David Walas. Between the pipes is sure-handed junior goalkeeper Sean Van Etten and leading the offensive attack will be junior Chris Landvik-Larsen.

The tournament has been canceled due to the condition of the fields and expected more rain today. No matches will be played this weekend in Mount Pleasant.

Thanks for the cooperation of the tourney committee and their willingness to work it out, but Mother Nature just wouldn't help out this weekend.

Man, I just came back from the fields and there are NO games! What is up with that? They had soccer in the stadium and baseball going on, but no soccer! Ridiculous!

Can anyone explain?

Town of Mount Pleasant owns the fields and made the decision. In their defense, I took my shoes off and walked around. My feet were under water several times.

I understand the town making the decision.
However, teams traveled last nite being told it was postponed not cancelled. Fundraising money was spent for hotels, etc., and some teams may have trouble getting out their contract with the hotels for checking out early. It is difficult to re coup that money. I would suggest a contigency plan for next year in the event this occurs again.

I would HOPE that Wando will be offering some sort of compensation in the form of giving back those entry fees. Every other tournament was played this weekend. People got games in and didn't have their weekends ruined by the harsh weather (sunny and 70).

What were the reasons for this tournament not being played? I watched yesterday's finals of the Viking Cup and it wasn't great weather, but not detrimental to the teams or fields either. Just wondering who was in charge of making the decisions down in Charleston.

Trust the organizers! Half of Charleston and Mt. Pleasant was under water this weekend. LowCountry elevation and mother nature work against field conditions sometimes! Fields would have been demolished if used this weekend.

Fair enough...Then I trust that the organizers would have a back-up plan to accomodate in this type of a circumstance. As of right now some teams bought a 3000 dollar adidas ball and a training top that's too small. Mother nature comes into play every now and then but, to get in NO GAMES what so ever with no word on whether or not these people will get their money back is absurd/sad/criminal/lame/fillintheblankwithdemeaningadjective.

.

This is the key aspect! Teams spent a bunch of money and had nothing to show for it. It will be interesting to see the backlash that the tournament suffers as a result in the future.

To my knowledge, a club tournament was canceled in similar form this past fall. It seems that Mount Pleasant Rec is developing a reputation to squander teams' plans with their cancellations and no backup plans in order.
