When will the new state rankings come out? It seems like there should be some movement after the Viking Cup results.

Personal allegiances aside, FM failed to win even one match at Viking Cup. They have a lot of potential, but not sure they're top 15 yet.

Spooky yes, disappointing yes. 3 starters were out like R Johnson stated. Two midfield and the starting keeper. Our starting forward played keeper in the 1st half, and then moved to the field in the 2nd half. No excuses though, still should have finished better in the 2nd half. Dang flu bug.

I really am amazed at the weight you folks put on scrimmages. I've been to scrimmages that ended in a one point difference in which most of the starters sat the bench for half the game (including the last 20-30 minutes of the game.) But based on a one point loss to Aiken in a scrimmage in which a lot of players were sick you folks are writing off Dutch Fork as a top 5 team? Wow.
I think Dutch Fork is the number 1 dark horse to reach the state finals this year.
Mauldin is much stronger than #7. Although injuries have hurt Irmo; they have the core of a wonderful team and I think they'll be strong this year as well.
And respectfully -- since "realmccoy" and others would know a lot more about this first-hand than me -- I'd be amazed if Fort Mill isn't a top 10 team when it's all said and done. The coach there has a tendency of getting a tremendous amount out of the players -- hard to believe that won't be the case this year as well even with a young team.
West Ashley made it to the bracket finals and they can't get any respect either. The greatest problem West Ashley has, along with TLH, is that they play in a relatively weak region and thus it's that much more challenging for them to get better as the year goes on. And while I'm a fan of TLH, and think that they're a top 10 team, I'm not quite sure what the euphoria is regarding their rocketing upward into the top 5.
One fascinating thing in all of this is that I think everything is debatable other than Wando being #1. They returned 18 players, lost just 3 seniors, and clearly are the best overall team in the state -- and in my opinion would have been regardless of the Viking Cup final. Most of the other teams aren't quite so fortunate; and it's going to be a real treat to see which teams grow during the season and which stand still.
Wando's problem is going to be getting past two things: teams that bunker down and hope for a 1-0 win with a single breakaway and referees that might not allow the extremely physical play that the team favors. Wando reminds me of a fighter that is at it's best standing toe to toe and slugging it out -- teams that have their best chance are those that are quick with the ball and which play in games in which the referees don't allow the game to become a slugfest.
Should be an interesting year...

I like to sandbag scrimmages and come in low under the radar. We scrimmaged Sparkle City two years ago, took it on the chin, and then got the W in the playoffs when needed. Kinda did the same with NW as well that year. I worry that no matter how hard we try today, it might look like we're sandbagging anyway!

mccoy,
just kidding. I just have a hard time moving anyone out of the top 15 with preseason scrimmages. even if you lose every game in the VC, you are playing the top teams in the state.

I agree w/you Shibumi:
Scrimmages amount to nothing when thinking of ranking. Every coach uses his or her own objectives in scrimmages.
I also agree that DF and FM are strong and will be stronger as it goes. TLH and Weat Ashley deserve a top 10 ranking, not a top 5. Although, TLH has a very heavy out of conference schedule. Those games, not the region, will determine their worth.
Mauldin and Irmo will rebound nicely.
1. Wando 2. Lexington 3. Dorman 4. Dutch Fork 5. Byrnes 6. Mauldin 7. Fort Mill 8. Irmo 9. TL Hanna 10 Spring Valley
W/E: I hear that whine going on. Just bring your cheese to go along with it and come on up the road. You should have to leave shortly, right? 9

i do not think real mccoy was giving that opinion based on scrimmages.he was comparing their play in the VC.like cid stated "you are playing the top teams in the state"and by not winning a game and being one of those top teams mccoy based his opinion on that.

Shibumi, The rankings I posted were for entertainment purposes only SCOMAX, Of all AAAA girls squads, I do believe TL Hanna may have more, or as many, CESA Premier players that start on their varsity team as any school in the state (9-10 given the line-up), but as you posted, how they fare in their difficult non-region matches will go further in the determination of how highly they are ranked than Region I-AAAA play. I may know a little more after watching the SCRIMMAGE tonight vs. South Aiken. Or I may not...

That old Hanna JV coach loooooooved to talk it up when he wasn't in the driver's seat. Now that he's in the spotlight with all that talent...hahaha, just kidding.
Hanna's got a A LOT of talent, but depth and youth are what will take time to get them top 5. Like last year, they're one injury away from a rough time. I'm gonna cut Craig some slack and say what he won't. If they can get them all back and healthy...I'll sit back and watch the fireworks!

At least your note was entertaining; my reply failed on both that count as well as demonstrating my persistent and aggressive ignorance!
The more I think about it, TLH is clearly and easily in the top 5 and any coach that led them to anything other than the state finals should be shot! [:) <-- Just jumping on the bandwagon -- I also think that South Aiken should easily win Region IV and only some type of coaching debacle will keep them from their destiny!]

Do they still play "Another one bites the dust" after each win up there? Nicest school in the state next to Dorman U.

No dust -- now we have grass on the fields. TLH will be a hard fought game for Mauldin. Maybe you can give us the low down on all those premier players after your match tonight ???

Shibumi, Glad you're on the bandwagon!
W&E, I wanted to put South Aiken at #3, but something told me to hold off for at least a week. I feel your power growing, however... Also, FATHER informed me that the construction of the Death Star is almost complete. I am impressed at your diligence.
Mavsupporter, I agree with W&E about the politeness and class of the Lady Mavs. When Gwynne was the coach, my Westside Girls team had to face some very dominant teams. One year I think all the starters did not even dress, and the next, when I could only field 8 players due to a band trip, she played with only 8 players the entire match! That is class. I will always respect Mauldin.
The same can be said for Dorman High and coach Lorenz. On Westside's first trip ever to the playoffs in 2006, he was the most accomodating opposing coach I have ever faced. He even congratulated my team in the pre-game program for making the playoffs!

Gywnne took a lot of heat for all the US titles, but the Bills results in the big game. Now that she's gone it's been a while, but I know Kev will get them back. He's a hoot for those of you that haven't met him.

Between the injuries and several of the players being sick at the VC we hope to be on the mend. I expect to see a very good match and hope the warm weather returns as those visitor stands are COLD.

If I remember correctly Mauldin has several premier players on there team and most of them are on the same club team. Hanna might have a edge with there senior goal keeper she is awesome.

I think you just like the sponsor on the 07. Next thing you know you will be pulling for Ashley Judd's hubby.
Mavsupporter:
Sounds like CJ is a little sceeerd about Monday, it will be a nice CESA reunion game. Maybe CESA should sponsor and provide a team meal afterwards.
UPSTATE GAMES should be alot more enjoyable than the lower state this year. Seems that teams are more equal this year than in the past.

Hanna moves up to #9. B.E. doesn't seem to be as strong nor Eastside which might have influenced the voting (TLH beat both). Personally, I think they'll breach the top 5 for the first time in school history soon. CJ has this group playing very, very well.
Kicking of the season will be a beautiful match with #9 T.L. Hanna vs #10 Mauldin. I hear the Discovery channel will be filming a documentary called "When Rednecks Collide" based on the HC's themselves.
Kevin vs Craig

Mann up 8 to #2
The Ladies Bengals of Blythewood up 5 to #10
Airport up 4 to #3
Looks like things are beginning to shake up early this season.
In case you can't tell, I'm proud of my young ladies!!! Keep up the good work!

What about South Aiken? 1-1-1 in the VC. They beat Myrtle Beach & Spartanburg lost to Myrtle Beach. Also, South Aiken's record is better than Spartanburg's. Not that Spartanburg isn't a quality side but games played should determine the rankings, not potential. Probably just an oversight & the games to be played this week will determine that both deserve top 15.
