I believe the requirement is that the number be visible from the front and the back, I think numbers on shorts in the front are allowed, instead of the jersey.

I questioned a rule at meeting this winter and my response was "You guys use the NFSHSA as your rules makers so it's really up to them. We just enforce them". I couldn't be upset with the SCHSL as they were just going by the approved book.

Numbers do not have to be on the front of the jersey itself. Shorts do count. But of course they must be on the back of the jersey. They just have to be visible to the referee from both sides, whether on the shorts or jersey

This is the exact rule:

All jerseys, except those worn by goalkeepers, shall be numbered on the back with a different arabic number at least 6 inches in height and on the front (jersey or shorts) with the same number which shall be at least 4 inches in height. Numbers shall be of contrasting color to the jersey (or shorts) and clearly visable.

This Rule needs to be on the SCHSL website under the Soccer Rules. Not burried in the Ref's Handbook. Coaches, Parents , and Players show have all rules visible.
