No repetition of last year's 0-6 and 0-4. Riverside by 3 goals, but if Erin Raffaldt's game is on, she can be an additional threat to Riverside's defense. She knows at least 5 Warriors from her most recent club season when they played successfully together for FSCG. It won't be an easy-going reunion although I'm sure they look forward to meet again.

Woodruff played Riverside & Eastside.Riverside is a very talented team, a loss by 3 goals would be a good outcome for Blue Ridge.

Blue Ridge is looking strong this year, but Riverside will be too much for them. I think Blueridge will be able to net one goal.
Final score will be Blueridge 1, Riverside 4.

Riverside won 3-0. Went up 1-0 in first half on a soft goal and scored on two corner kicks in the second half. Best team won. BR played Catennacio with Marissa and Erin deep in defense/mid. Choice was to prevent scoring and not to score - Riverside was just too good.

Last year's scores were 6-0 with Riverside not shooting in the second half, and 4-0 when the game got rained out with 10 minutes left in the first half. Riverside could have named the score last year.

This year, BR is much better. Also only had 12 girls due to spring break and injuries. Not an excuse, just a fact.

Heard that BR packed it in and that RHS had 48 shots on goal, very windy (with 6-7 hitting the post and cross bar and many more just missing left or right) Heard that the BR goalie played very well!

48 shots on goal for 3 goals... that's 45 saves. sounds like she played just a little better than "very well".

Uh. . .not ever missed shot = save. . .

Most shots are missed entirely by the player striking the ball. . .

"...had 48 shots on goal.."

It's not a "shot on goal" if it's not on frame. It's simply a "shot". A shot on goal results in either a goal or a save.

rebound off frame wouldn't be a save. . .

and i doubt 48 shots "on goal" as the "shots" v. "shots on goal" terminology is not strictly applied in SC HS soccer. . ..

IF she stopped 45 shots on goals, it was a fruitful night for a keeper. . .but i never take people's claims of "shots on goal" very seriously. . .thank Coach P

Very often people use the term "shots on goal" inaccurately to mean "shots". I think we should promote the proper use of these terms and the differentiation of "shots" and "shots on goal" for high school statisticians. I don't know of a high school statisticians' manual, but the following quotes are from the NCAA Soccer Statisticians' Manual:

“A shot is an attempt that is taken with the intent of scoring and is directed toward the goal”.

“A shot on goal is a shot that is on net. The results of a shot on goal must be either a save by the goalkeeper or defending team or a goal by the attacking team. A shot that hits the post or crossbar without being deflected by a goalkeeper or defender and does not cross the goal line is not a shot on goal.”

Coach P:
Is spot on, a ball that hits the post or crossbar is not a shot on goal, even if the ball is deflected against the post or crossbar it's still just a shot.

Riverside had 20 shots on goal and shot about 20 balls 10 feet or more wide. They got very frustrated and just started kicking it in from 30 yards out. Had about 17 serious shots. Scored on a fluke miss by the BR goalie(concentration lapse), a header by their 7'6" midfielder (girl is VERY tall), and Sara bulling a pinball in from about 2 feet.

BR keeper is very, very good. She visited PC on Friday.

For the record, Riverside had 43 "shots", but only 20 were on goal, keeper for BR had 17 saves. They scored on two corners, plus one once-in-a-lifetime miss by the BR keeper which was just an easy catch that she missed.

BR kept the shots to 1/3 of last year. We don't worry too much about the 30 yarders that go out between the edge of the goal and the corner.

Don't remember the 6-7 crossbar. Caitlin blocked two shots off the crossbar. I'll look for the rest on the film.

Magical moment at the BR-Riverside game. Remember, Blue Ridge is a team that won 1 game three years ago and 2 games two years ago.

Riverside showed up at BR in their red unis. Well, BR had only black jerseys and red jerseys (no pants for either) at the first of this year. We used our uniform money for pants. Tells you something. As coach, I promised them if they made the playoffs that I would get them a set of white uniforms. Had them made, printed, and delivered by Lloyd's Soccer while on vacation earlier this week in three hours, and brought them in the trunk of my car to the game.

The highly nervous girls excitingly came to me and said that we had no unis to wear and that as home team we had to wear some other color. Ta Da! White unis, smiles, and another groups of girls who feel better about themselves.

This is fun.

ROH—

I suspected as much about the shots, and know the uni dilemma well. Woodruff has had only the Maroon kit most of the years of the program, with a few years having an alt T-shirt. We also ran into having only one sock color a few times. . .

In fact, in the state champ last year, Woodruff girls wore their "yellow" T's instead of the Maroon jerseys to help with the heat. . .

Great story...moments like that mean a lot to them, often more than wins!

I can't think of a better reason to be involved in the sport...and you're right.

This is fun.

I have been taking stats for a long time. I always have questions. These are a couple of stat rules I thought was interesting. 1. If a player takes a shot and it hits the cross bar deflects off and one of their own players shoots it in, the player that shot off the cross bar gets an assist. 2. Can there be two assist on a goal. The rules say yes. Yep it is possible if there is a one touch to another player that one touches it to the player that shoots there can be two assist. At least that is what the rules say. Very interesting I thought.

The assist rule in soccer runs against the concept most people bring from basketball, where assists usually never out-total made shots. . .it is interesting as a soccer concept. . .
