My son was an AR at Manchester yesterday for a game between CESA Columbia and Discoveries U12 boys.

Very good game (2-2 tie) between two skilled and obviously well coached teams. Both groups will be fun to keep an eye on in the coming years.

Your son did a very good job. My son plays on the CESA-Columbia team and we always have very good matches with that Discovery team. They had more scoring chances this go around.

I'm wondering if you saw the two no-calls in the second half in the Discovery goal area (your son was at the other end). The first looked very much like a hand ball on a shot and the second like a trip on our player as he beat the last defender. We thought both should have been awarded PK's but we are admittedly biased. What did you see?

Thanks for your comments....he's a first year ref and is enjoying it. The more experienced guys up here are mentoring him nicely.

I missed the whole first half and probably spent 1/2 of the second at the playground with my 4 year old, so I'm not the best person to ask about specific plays.

I think I did see the one "handball" play. Can't say I saw it clear enough to have an opinion tho. I was on the parents side....but the play was on the far post and the defender was angled away from me. I heard someone say they thought it hit the kid in the face.

I know the other AR very well and have watched her do several games and have always been impressed with her. I'd trust her to be in position and to make the right call.

Don't know the guy who did the center....and on the handball play I'd probably say it was his call to make or not.

You guys have a very nice team.....a couple of superb young players complimented by a core of very good players. Tactically and technically I was very impressed. If you can find 3 extra players to make the jump to full sided you'll be in a position to compete well next year.

I didn't mean to imply that she should have made a call, only that it was not on your son's end. We are searching for new players for next year but really can't do anything until after the season. If you know 3-4 players in Columbia tell them about us. We just started as a club two years ago as a single team and now there are 6 teams playing out of CESA-Columbia, most in the younger age groups.

My son just started reffing this year and realized it's not as easy as it looks. It's also made me seek confession for all the times I've gotten on a ref, especially a young teenager....as long as they look like they're trying. We had one AR a few weeks ago who never got closer to midfield than the 18 even when our last defender was over midfield.

I gotcha. No problems.

I also saw the Columbia United team in this age group play on Saturday. You guys are a much better team.....no comparing. They might have some kids that could help out tho.

If I lived in Columbia and saw the 2 teams play...we'd be at your tryouts....

The Columbia United U12 Elite are playing 11-a-side in the U13 division. Is that the team you saw?

The U12 elite squad playing 11v11 is very good. They were in our division last year but never played against us.
They have a few very fast goal scorers and they seem solid top to bottom.

We did play the other u12 8v8 squad in the fall (surprisingly in Rock Hill!?!) and they do have some catching up to do but are getting better and doing well this spring after dropping down a division.

Thanks for the good words. I agree that Discoveries and CESA Columbia were two good, evenly matched teams. It was a fun game because the teams are well coached, but also have different styles and types of players. I have to believe that CESA-Columbia will find three or four quality players who will help it move to the Select level next year. No doubt, Discoveries will thrive in Select.

Looking for the U12 Boys Elite team for Columbia United?

Under the direction of Columbia United Academy Director and their coach Greg Vallee, Columbia United 95 Boys Elite can be found doing extremely well as the current leader of the U13 PMSL Classic One division. They also recently were the finalist in the Vulcan Cup in Birmingham, AL in the Gold division of U12 11 v 11.

Here's an article about the Vulcan trip on the Columbia United website.

Only saying that I saw the U12 team that plays small sided....and that they are not as good as the CESA Columbia or Discoveries teams.

If CUFC's top team is playing up at U13......good for them!!! I haven't seen them play but from the sounds of things they are a high quality side as well.

Thanks. I notice the U-12B have only 5 teams, three from one club. Seems there isn't much interest across the state in this tournament.
