I think the BL - Woodruff game was actually 3-0.
Woodruff won the game over an unenthusiastic Ben Lippen team.
Woodruff also won for the most obnoxious parent of the year.
Anyone that continues to yell for players to hurt someone, as in "knock them down" and"go for the knees" should be escorted out of the stadium.
Of the 20 games I have attended this year from 4A to 2A, I have not heard or seen anyone on the sidelines/stands act in such an obnoxious manner.
You want to say that Woodruff is a good team, well coached and that #9 is a very good player but it is hard when you've had to listen to a parent shout the worst things from the stands.
A Woodruff player received a red card during the game.
The parent should have been removed too.

Well its time to pull "dadburngummit" out of the bag and use it.

At Blythewood- Dreher 1 Blythewood 0

Our girls played well- really well. Kept Dreher on their heels much of the time, absorbed the couter attacks, executed all the adjustments and corrections, played unselfishly, and worked the ball around pretty good too. Gave up the goal on a corner about halfway through the 2nd half- my mistake to not to square away the marking assignments beforehand. Still, probably should have tied and maybe gone ahead but for an offsided (yes it was the right call) and a good save by their keeper. Last 15 minutes was a sheer joy to watch and coach, all except for the score- unfortunately-dadburngummit

I saw where Spring Valley beat Lexington last night in pks. I understand it was tied 1-1 after regulation play and Lexington had a hard time making their pks. Does anyone have the details of the game?

One obnoxious parent yelling to "take the knees out" of players should be embarassment enough for that school. There is NEVER an excuse to yell for your players to hurt someone on the other team - period.

I wasn't going to respond to any of this but gunners you have pushed my buttons. I was at the game too. The whole situation escalated from the fact that the refs had absolutely no control of the game from minute one. The BL players and the "ball men" made most of the calls. The refs just went along with it. By the way, how many coaches does BL even have? I saw 3 by the bench and 2 or 3 more "coaching" from various locations around the field. The entire match was like a bad CUFC club game. BL has a really good team and we were fortunate that they couldn't get a shot into the net. As far as the confrontation between fans, you need to look at your own before you start hating on Woodruff. Remember you come to us next time.

I watched the game; Lexington did have the upper hand on the first half. They were able to score, when the ball was cleared out of the box, after a corner kick. The high ball slipped right through the keeper's hand and the bar, very impressive goal. After that not too many shot's made it to the goal by Lexington. Second half SV was fired up, and was able to press Lexington's defense. With 20 minutes left, SV changed their offense, and began multiple attacks on goal. They were able to score on one of the attacks, and missed several others. Overtime was uneventful for both sides. (During PK's) Both teams missed their first shot, with Lexington stopping the first. SV was able to score three PK's to Lexington's none. Center referee called the game well, kept the game under his reigns.

jv-mama,

Powerful last sentence!!!! Should they bring a police escort?
Despite all descriptions of what went on (bad officials/bad ball men/bad parents/etc...), no parent should be yelling the things that were being yelled, period. Neither your post nor fat boys post deny these comments. Parents have to remember that they are the adults, and no matter the situation, they should act like adults.

Do you really think the officials, had absolutely no control of the game whatsoever? When they blew the whistle, did players stop? When it was halftime, did the BL players and "Ball Men" tap the official and tell him? I think a bad situation has caused you to go a little on the deep end. It even sounds like a threat with your last sentence. Yikes

To all BL and Woodruff players, great game ladies. All of you played the game hard and very physical. Nothing for any of you to be ashamed of. As I have always said, the parents should pay more attention to see if their kids are complainig, and if not, then the parents shouldn't either. Because they are letting you know that they expect that from the game. So please watch and enjoy the game. It was a great game, don't ruin it. And don't blame the players for the parents mistakes. AGAIN GREAT GAME!!!

At Charlotte, NC:
Fort Mill 1
Charlotte Country Day 1

I was really, really, really tempted to post this as a 1-0 FM victory. Who's gonna know, right? But...no...I am way too honest and have way too much integrity to do that. So, in the spirit of total honesty I will simply tell it like it is...WE WUZ HOZED!

Yessirree Bob, the FM girls got a real taste of NC home cookin' tonight. The 3 ref/chef system? Better than 2? Is it better to have 3 who can't read the recipe? Example: Offside. We all know this rule, right? Harder to call with 2 refs, can't always be in a good position. 3 refs mean no mistakes, right? The player is ONside as long as she is ONside when the ball is played? Nah, not in NC. If you've made it behind the defense when the ball comes DOWN, you're OFFside.

And complaining about CCD players climbing your FM players back? The center ref stopped play, walked to the FM sideline, and said to the coach (and I quote, I cannot make this stuff up!) "You are not going to get a call. Not tonight. Not in Virginia, not in North Carolina, not in South Carolina. Not tonight"

Idle words? Puleeze! 79th minute, FM leads 1-0. Ball is in the FM box, 1 foot from the goal line. The ball has rolled to a stop. CCD player stands over it. FM player stands behind her. CCD player locks her heels together, keeps her legs stiff, and slowly, gracefully, starts to lean. It looked like ballet, it was so graceful. As her center of gravity moves beyond her ability to recover, she keeps herself ramrod straight until she topples to the ground like a redwood. Question: If a CCD player falls in the forest at home, and no one can hear it, is it still a PK?

Unbelievable. CCD is a good team, too. It could have been a good match. Oh well...

Thanks to Goooalaso for the word of encouragement to all the girls. They all played hard and gave it a great effort. There is no ill will on my part toward any of them. Hopefully any ill will can be left in the stands never to rear its ugly head again. As for the earlier question concerning the # of BL coaches, there is 1 head coach, 1 assistant, and 2 who volunteer when time allows. Sounds about like most programs to me. Let's put it all in the past...

Tuesday night at Greenwood Christian, Ben Lippen won 5-1.
Goals scored for BL by Meritt Rollins (2), Rita Walsh, Lauren Jones, and Elizabeth Hodges. GC has a good young team who played hard the entire game. Great job, ladies!

Tonight at West Ashley:

WA 3
Beaufort 0

I got to this game about 15 minutes in; WA had already scored. Beaufort hung tough in what turned out to be a very physical match--the yellow cards were flying by the end of the game--and looked like they had the momentum to challenge for the win. A second WA goal with less than 15 to go took the wind out of their sails, though, and WA took advantage of the change in momentum to plug in a third game-sealing goal in the final minutes.

All in all, a hard-fought game; plenty of contact, one good scuffle, and a very professional effort by the WA squad to get their heads back into the game and find the net when they needed it.

Not so often I get to just sit and watch a game these days...was kind of nice!

Anyone out there have scores for Summerville girls? This is a major program in this area that a lot of us would like to keep up with, but there have been no scores posted since 3/18.

Lowcountry folks, we're falling down on the job a little here...let's get these scores in!

BE @ WANDO, 4/9
Tied 1-1
Wando Goal - Sally Hyland
BE Goal - I do not know her name, but it was a perfectly placed goal in the top corner.
1-1 at end of OT. BE wins in PK's.
Wando keeper, Jade Davis, made a couple of saves during PK's. Four Wando players miss their PK's. One over the goal, one hit the left bar, one hit the right bar, one miss to the right.
Congrats to BE.

The BE goal was scored by Katie Runey, a sophmore.

Wando scored first, but BE settled down and kept working very hard.

BE Keeper Erika Christensen played an awesome game - made some great saves and had some awesome punts. She is amazing.

Both teams played a good clean game and the refs did a great job. Good luck to both teams for the rest of the season!

Hanna 3 Wren 1

Wren jumped on us early and that does not suprise me. I almost posted earlier on the other thread about under-rated teams supporting Wren, but I thought it would come off as pandering to the team I was about to play. Wren is tough and their results bear that out. They beat a great Mann team and lost close matches to us and Dorman and that megastud school Parkview from Georgia.

Here is a link to the article to appear tomorrow in the Anderson Independent recapping the game:

http://www.independentmail.com/news/2008/apr/09/crafts-corner-kicks-lead-tl-hanna-over-wren/

I am proud of our girls for an important win over a solid team tonight!

At Summerville:

S'ville 5
Berkeley 0

Berkeley started out a little tentative; something about Summerville's stadium seems to bleed the life out of us. Score was 3-0 at half. A halftime refocusing changed the pace of the game a bit; a bounce off the keeper back to a S'ville attacker and an own-goal were the two scores of the second half. Both teams played hard through the final whistle. Officials were kept busy keeping a rein on an increasingly physical game; two yellows on S'ville players rounded out the night.

A loss on the board, but proud of my girls for digging to the end and letting a very talented Summerville team know they were there.

I was present at the Wando Vs. BE game. Wando dominated the whole game including 5 min overtimes. Wando for some reason could not put it in the net.Wando had 19 shots on goal to BE's 4. Wando's goal was by Sally Hyland during the first half, and BE's by Katie Runey during the second. BE's goal was a nicely placed upper 90 shot that no goalkeeper had a chance for. Then it came down to PK's Jade Davis was in goal for Wando a junior that lead Wando to their state championship last year. First PK for BE was perfectly placed in the left corner. Wando's kicker senior Boo Hall shot over the crossbar. BE's second kick was placed in the right corner Jade Davis coming up with the save. Then a Wando player (her name is escaping me) hit the right post. Then BE's kicker hit it wide left. Wando's kicker hit the left post. Then Jade Davis came up with another great save against the BE kicker. Then it was Olivia Urigs chance (4A Player of the year -2007) she sent one flying by BE's keeper. Then it was tied up. BE's kicker put a very nice shot right corner just by Wando's Jade Davis. Sandi Hudson stepped up and hit one wide left. So BE won in PK's. They deserved to win the PK portion of the game. My hat goes off to Jade Davis who made three saves in PK's. No way is this is going to affect Wando they are still looking ahead at another state championship. Wando is now 13-0-1.
But Congrats to BE and good luck for both of the teams in the future!

I was at the BE Wando game also. Did not keep track of shots, but will agree that Wando had many more chances. Give BE credit though for playing tough defense and keeping pressure on Wando. Some of the Wando shots were not very strong. Those shots that were strong were handled by BE's keeper, Erika Christensen - also a junior that led her team to a State Championship last year. She made some awesome saves (maybe 19?). All the BE players, while smaller than Wando, made up for the difference by playing with a lot of heart. A lot of these girls are friends on the field during club season, and friends off the field as well. They are a great group and I saw only one player that did not shake hands after the game and congratulate each other on a well played game. I'm hoping that both teams continue on to state and bring home the championships in May. GO LOWCOUNTRY SOCCER.

Blythewood 3 AC Flora 1

First game all season that our girls came out of the gate ready to play and carried it through (almost) to the final whistle. Just the very last couple of minutes did they start to loose focus. The referees did a good job I thought in what turned into a very physical game at times but was never allowed to get out of control on either side.

Always proud of those Lady Bengals!!

10 April 2008 @ Lugoff-Elgin

Camden 2:1 Lugoff-Elgin (in PKs)

PKs:
Camden 1:0 Lugoff-Elgin

Lugoff-Elgin had numerous chances throughout the match to secure the win, but they could not find the back of the net. Things did not get any better during the shootout either. Hard played match on both sides. Congratulations to Camden.

Tony, excellent result for your Lady Bengals. It sounds like you were really prepared for them this time.

Well played and hard fought by both teams.

1-0 West Ashley at half. 1-1 with 5 minutes to go.
Goals: WA Cash 2 (18' and 76')
AM Farrier 55'

Cash is part of a very strong freshman class at West Ashley. They start 4 freshmen and 3 or 4 sophomores. They are a team to watch in the future.

Blue Ridge 5, Greenville Tech 1 (scored on PK). Hat trick for Marissa Sumwalt, 2 goals for Caitlin Fountain our goalie who hurt a thumb and can't play goalie for a while so went into midfield and scored twice! Two brilliant ninth grade crosses. Good, tough win in a downpour.

Stats for the Ben Lippen's 2-1 win at Hammond:

BL Goals: Meritt Rollins (PK), Elizabeth Hodges
BL Assist: Carrie Settle
BL Keeper: Anne Armstrong - 8 saves
H Goal: Alex Metropol
H Keeper: Ella Hyatt

Excellent game down to the wire. Great win for my Ben Lippen girls! They played their hearts out in the second half. Hammond led 1-0 at halftime. Meritt Rollins and Sammi Osman anchored the midfield for BL with tremendous games and Carrie Settle played a stellar game at forward. Meritt Rollins is definitely one of the best players in SCISA as a senior. Anne Armstrong played a great game in goal making some exceptional saves. Way to go Lady Falcons!

4/11 at Greenwood

Greenwood 2
Westside 0

Game played at 5:30 due to fear of Thunderstorms that didn't hit until 10PM! Westside bus was late leaving, waiting for jv kids, thus about 18 minutes of warm up time led to an uninspired outing and upset coach. Greenwood scored in the 21st and 69th minute to seal the deal, locking up at least 3rd place in Region I-AAAA, maybe 2nd if they can win in a rematch vs. Wren. Wren has allowed 7 goals against Hanna, G-Wood only 2 in the first match, but Greenwood would HAVE to beat Wren to jump them in the seedings.

Congrats to George and his girls, they are an aggressive bunch, play strong defense and were deserving of the win!

Shots: Greenwood 17, Westside 6
Corners: Greenwood 6, Westside 2

Losses in OT and then pk's. It stinks, but it's encouraging that they are so close and not blow outs like the Byrnes of old. Good stuff Rebels, and congrats to my favorite Region II coach. Yeah, I said it JL.

Two Byrnes players have been out for several weeks, one with mono and the other with a knee injury. Both are CESA Primier players and I'm sure that has affected the team's performance. Hardworking team.

Every team has injuries during the season. Mauldin has had three premier players out since the first of March. They only had one sub Thursday when they beat Byrnes in overtime. You adjust and go on. No excuses.

Hey mavs soccer,

The question was asked in another post about the length these "premier players" will be out of service. Do you care to answer or is this a secret?

Good Luck on your next week games as it is a tough week for any team.

Futbol 08,
I didn’t mean to offend you and you certainly didn’t ruffle my feathers. The point I was trying to make is most teams suffer injuries or sickness during a season. It’s how the coach and players respond that makes the difference. So far Coach Czar has done a great job adjusting his team and keeping it competitive. Byrnes is a great team and we look forward to seeing you again.

I was at the Waccamaw and BE game; did not see the goal but it was noted in the paper that it was in the 11th minute. To be honest, I was not impressed with either team. It was all BOOM ball/Kick ball. Neither team held possession of the ball and try to make things work; BE dominated the 2nd half, having several chances to equalize; they had the wind which was a factor too. Waccamaw's goalie was solid and did not seemed hesitant in play; at the end of the game Waccamaw pressed and had 2 great chances to seal the deal. I guess they play at the end of the regular season in Charleston, and I know last year they split til the playoffs and BE beat WHS for the lower state. Again, not impressed with either team in terms of quality of soccer on the field-no purpose in either teams play.

okay, maybe if you saw the game you would understand. i am not talking about kicking the or clearing the ball out of the back...i am talking about in the middle of the field or when the teams were attacking their goals...their passes were just boom kicks and see if anyone can run onto them. There is a difference in boom kicking to clear the ball and playing possession to control a game.
Dale Jr, maybe you don't understand the concept of "playing with purpose" means...plus these are the top 2 teams in 2A, they should be able to possess the ball and pass to feet, not just "get teh stinkin' ball out of the back" or "get rid of it", no matter who you are playing, or maybe these teams are not as good as i thought. I am just saying as a coach who has coached at all levels and in several states i was not impressed!

As I witnessed my first NASCAR race on TV this weekend watching Dale Jr's version of "Long Ball" [i.e., one more lap, one more lap, oh shoot we don't have enough gas!), .........

It seems with all of the money and time they have, someone would be able to figure out how much gas it takes....

NASCAR ain't soccer coaching, you know!

so dale jr., you are comparing South Carolina High School to EPL? or did you mean that is how they play it in the MLS-as that is how teams in the MLS paly-kick ball. Now i know who i am talking with...you keep telling your kids or team that is how you want them play. If they ever get a chance to play at a high level, they will be watching from the bench as that is not how quality soccer is played.
Maybe these teams strategically did play long ball-but as we can see it did not help as BE lost, and Waccamaw did not score again...
These two teams are full of club players and would have thought to see a quality game, that is all i saying...some teams are effective using kick ball and if it works use it

I'd type slower to help you understand, but it all comes out the same when I post. You've basically said long ball is not a purpose driven style, nor is it quality. To that I question your all-star coaching career that has spanned infinite miles. Bah I say to you, your observations, and your omnipotent, arrogant, and narrow minded vision of soccer.

In my humble opinion...

The number of teams, and players, capable of playing a controlled "long ball" strategy in South Carolina high school girls soccer is not large. The fundamental difference between "boom ball" and "long ball" is that long ball implies both skill and strategy, while "boom ball" is best characterized by an instinctive reaction to kick the ball as hard as you can somewhere, anywhere, that you're not.

Sure, sure, agreed. I've seen the back up, run up and kick the ball high to the parent's "Aaaaaahhhhhhhhh" and "oooooooohhhhhh". I've just got an issue with saying possession is the only way to go. I just find it hard to believe these two top teams were merely stupefied by some unknown being to suddenly begin kicking wildly at the ball in all directions. I also find it difficult to swallow that Arsenal/possession type soccer is the only way in life to go.

Winning with class with 1 goal on a long ball is better than losing with 0 goals and 79.5 minutes of possession.

Playing quick and direct balls to forwards feet or to space in behind the defensive line can be a very effective attacking style. Say for example you are lined up in a 4-3-3 formation, and the opposing team is lined up in a 3-5-2, odviously they have numbers up in the midfield. I would instruct my defensive players as an attacking strategy to play longer balls, bypassing the midfield to the forwards were I have a greater chance of success. Now depending on how the defense is playing the forwards would dictate If we play to feet or to space in behind the defense for the forwards to run on to.

I do not think anyone would doubt the beauty of playing a passing game. However, tactically speaking, when the MF cannot keep pace and control the ball, then sometimes bypassing the MF is a great strategy. Put better skilled ball handlers that have great judgment in the back (change from 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3) and play-it up. Just like the other football (which I coached under now Dr. Maddox), every system in football works. It just depends on talent level as to which one you can get good at! I now post that Dale wins the dissagrement by common sense!

That "unknown being" is typically defensive pressure. There are a ton of players out there that can look good when there's little pressure; there are a lot fewer that look good as the pressure increases.

Take Wando for example. Wando does an excellent job of pressuring other teams into looking silly. I haven't seen Dorman play this year, but in the past they were very good at this as well.

I don't disagree that there are positive and negative attributes associated with direct and indirect styles of play. The key here is the term "control." Many high school games I see are characterized by a lack of control; thus, when someone talks about "boom ball" and "kick ball" they typically are referring to a style of play that is frenetic and without obvious purpose (other than to get the ball away from the player's immediate vicinity.) When someone uses the term "long ball" then it implies that there was an actual intent to play the ball long -- acurately to a teammate.

I don't think anyone is arguing whether "long ball" soccer is either strategically or tactically sound. I do think that equating "long ball" soccer with "boom ball" is a logical fallacy.

The skills to play long ball soccer as per the EPL reference made to begin this discussion are as great or greater than the skills to play a less direct passing game. I haven't seen a lot more outside backs that are better at accurate 40-50+ yard passes than I have seen midfielders who are accurate at 10-20+ yards with their passes.

To summarize all of this -- there are times that "pray and kick" (or kick ball, or boom ball, or whatever) might work and is all you can play with the players and the opponents you have. The only reason I jumped into this discussion was that there appears to be a difference between "EPL long ball direct strategies" and "South Carolina girls high school kick the heck out of the ball and pray it goes somewhere else strategies."

But I'm certainly no authority -- and certainly haven't seen most of the high school teams play in South Carolina -- so I could absolutely be missing something here...

so dale jr., you are comparing South Carolina High School to EPL? or did you mean that is how they play it in the MLS-as that is how teams in the MLS paly-kick ball.

Seems to me he is arguing if it is strategically sound. I think that his first, second, and last point. I know you love playing the devil's advocate, but I'm having a hard time following you on this one.

dale jr.-it is not worth explaining myself...so you just keep playing your long ball in the air and on the ground and never teach the kids possession...GOOD LUCK!!!

ps. my dad did coach me when i was a youth player and taught me the fundamentals....i learned from alot of different coaches and i never said i coached on 7 continents...however i did coach at the collegiate level and never did I once hear a coach tell their players to play KICK BALL

to add on to the comments..what i witnessed of this game, as i was there, was not effective for either team...they played kick ball most of the game and hoped someone could run on to it. it did not work-some of through balls (which is a tatic used in soccer) was at time effective (but this is different than kick or boom ball). both teams with a deep sweeper so they needed to possess the ball and penetrate the backs to be successfully. that was my point in the game....and secondly, if you were not there to see the game and make point of what i saw, then don't say anything....it sounds like everyone has made their points better than how i explained it...but you keep playing kick ball and i hope it works for you

Still confused. Are you keepersd200whatever too? When did I say you coached on 7 continents? When did I say "play kick ball"?

Do you even know what you are talking about? Are you sick? Are you feeling ill or light-headed? Do you need me to call someone for you?

Are you speaking english? Not only has your incoherent rambling created a web of confusion, I'm having trouble deciphering what you are actually saying. Geez man/woman, proofread. Long ball is a genuine, useful tactic that can be used to over compensate a week midfield, or take advantage of team that over commits. Where did I say do not teach possession? Where did I say if my team is more skillful I'll not opt to play possession?

My comment is that long ball is a useful tactic. Do you agree or disagree. One answer goes against all soccer logic displayed in FIFA accepting countries everywhere. The other sends you down Hypocrite Lane. What's it gonna be?

Simple, and already mentioned...the "best" tactic is the one that fits the players available. If you have expert dribblers, passers, and general one-on-one ball handlers, the passing/possession game can frustrate your opponents and make them look silly, and always sending the ball long is a waste of their natural abilities. If on the other hand you have a ton of speed up top, heck, send the ball long and let them outrun the defense; playing short passes all the time would be a waste of THEIR natural talents.

There is no one "right" system, style, or formation; good coaches just pick the ones that play to their players' strengths and minimize their weaknesses.

('Course, that said, even when playing long ball to a super-fast offense, it still pays to control the ball in the midfield and backfield long enough to draw the defense up and create some good running room...but I think Jr. has covered that as well.)

Let the goalie kick it 120 yards into the top 90 and then the other team can kick off. That's long ball!

I think I'm done with this fellas. You want your kids to control well, pass with accuracy, and finish. Should you choose to bypass a difficult opponent's midfield, so be it. It's taught and appreciated all over the world. Chass, like most situations, summed it up best. Good night to all, and to all a good night.

Assuming you're referring to a punt or drop kick from around the 18, you must have a very long field.

Let her play it to a defender who plays it back to her at the end line and let her stick it a dead flat 120 into the top right corner.

[If you know this kid, have her call me!]
