North Squads Win and Draw vs. South at North-South Soccer Classic

June 22, 2019

Anderson, S.C. - The annual North-South Soccer Classic was held Saturday, June 22, 2019 at T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson. The girls match ended in a 1-1 draw while in the boys’ contest the North squad was victorious 4-1 on a sun-splashed day in the Electric City at Jim Fraser Field.

The girls match was scoreless in the first half but not for a lack of action as each goalkeeper, South Aiken’s Amorie Kostelak of the South team and York Comprehensive’s Haylee Myrup from the North squad, recorded four saves in the opening stanza. In the second period, Ashley Ridge’s Campbell Gibson opened the scoring when she slotted home a shot to the near post in the 56th minute to give the South a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until two minutes remained in the game when Marianne Ross of Riverside connected on a shot from the top of the 18 to level the match at 1-1. The North’s Ashleigh Keiser of Southside Christian was tabbed the Most Valuable Player while Gibson earned MVP honors for the South. The South now leads the overall series 10-8-5 and has lost just once since 2011, a span in which the South is now 4-1-4.

In the boys game the North halted a five-match skid in the series with a comprehensive 4-1 victory. After a fast start by the North team in which they fired five shots on goal in the first five minutes there was only one goal in the first period. That score occurred in the 19th minute when Spring Valley’s Jeyson Diaz lofted a corner kick over White Knoll goalkeeper Jacob Koon that found its way into the back side netting. 15 minutes into the second half, Lexington’s Nolan Pollard evened the game at 1-1 when he knocked home a pass from Philip Siegwald of Oceanside Collegiate. But from that point on it was all Royal Blue as the North recorded a score less than one minute later by Dixie’s Bradley Nickles followed by scores at the 60’ mark by Colton Pereyo on an assist from Northwestern’s Carson Guest and then at the 69’ mark again by Guest. Siegwald was selected MVP for the South and Guest notched the MVP for the North. The North now leads the series 16-11-4 and was victorious for the first time since 2013.
