Did anyone attend the rules clinic at the HS league office last night?
I heard that Roger Hazel was quoted as saying "cones were not allowed" in pre-season conditioning. If this is the case, I would suspect most HS teams would be in violation of this rule. Also, are the officials really going to check every players guards to make sure they have the HS federation logo on them?

i was at our meeting in florence; yes he said that cones are not acceptable if you have more than 8 people at conditioning; if you have 8 or less you can do whatever you may like, play 4v4 if you want. He said any training that will enhance the skills of the sport ie. putting a row of cones and doing agility drills is not allowed (i know what are you supposed to do...)

He also said that it is the discretion of the referee's if they want to check all shinguards; i guess it is better to be safe than sorry...my guess is that if there is a question about someones shinguards that they may check, but as we know how refs can be at times-

that is what i got from our meeting in florence

On the cones issue, the rule states that if it enhances the skills of your specific sport. However, you cannot tell me that if i set up cones for agility drills for soccer that it would be any different than football. Therefore, it is not enhancing a specific sport!!

Yet another example of the SCHSL showing their infinite wisdom to all who love the beautiful game in SC.

this is what he said-if you had more than 8 people at the pre-season session...i questioned him again about playing 4v4 with 8 people and he said that you could do anything with the 8 people;

i am the messenger and sharing what he said at our meeting...i agree-some team, not soccer, use items they are not supposed to use...i guess if you caught

I was at the meeting in Columbia last night. Roger Hazel did say that "no cones" or any other sport specific equipment. Yes, a few other sports also could and do use cones. But not all sports use cones.
He used the an example of baseball and running the bases as a specific drill of what should not be done due to the uniqueness of that drill to that sport. While generic for many sports, it is the weaving drill around the cones that directly enhances soccer - while not being specific to just soccer.
Reading between the lines of what was said, I would not use cones, but create or use some other drill - and use something other than cones (or nothing at all) to organize your conditioning.

I hope this helps

So anything else could be used to weave in and out?, like paint spots or sticks (maybe even better, if they are the full height ones which you can angle them and force full motion).

Sounds ridiculous...

sprinting enhances soccer is this illegal? running 3 miles enhances soccer is it illegal?

Playing club in the fall and tournaments in the winter enhances soccer is it illegal?

The confusion is that you may not have cones being used to simulate a player or a team formation. But you may use them to hop over and run around as you are conditioning. I was given the example of not being able to be on the baseball diamond and running around the bases for conditioning, as that is sport specific to the use of the equipment. I just got off the phone with Rodger Hazel and got the clarification but I will ask him again at the Clinic at the end of January.

That was the way he explained it at the Stratford High School rules clinic as well...the context was no putting out cones to mark positions in team formations to run through drills. There was no mention of not putting out a cone to mark how far you want the kids to run before stopping.

I've got good news and bad news...
