Pretty good results for SC girls from the ECNL Winter Showcase. The U-15, U-16 and U-17 girls were a combined 8-0-1 for the event. U-18 girls had a tough time with three 2-1 losses.

Kudos to the U-18 coach for sticking to a "showcase" strategy in the face of league play, and kudos to the team for wrapping up its last major event of 5 months play in 3 different leagues. Now, THAT was one long season.

With all the games and travel you did, I am sure the sights were good.

Feel free to double check my figures, but from what I can tell the CESA 92 girls played:

7 ECNL games
11 R3PLE games
7 SCSCL games
3 State Cup games
4 CESA Tourn. games
3 Greensboro Tourn. games

This started in Greensboro on Sept. 4th and ended Dec. 29th. That's 3 months and 25 days for 35 games.

Last year, Mauldin HS played 30 games starting on Feb. 25 and ending on May 21. That's not quite 3 months for 30 games.

Did any of the CESA players play in every single game this fall? If so, how many? Did any of the Mauldin girls play in every single game last spring? If so, how many?

I know it's not the point, but how may college coaches saw Mauldin play last spring? How many coaches saw the CESA girls play?

Sounds like the HS season can be pretty long too.

Actually, the season began with full training starting in late July shortly after return from Seattle, then CESA team camp last weekend in July, "friendly" with Southern Wesleyan Aug. 12 in preparation for R3PLE league games beginning Aug. 21 with back to back weekends in Jacksonville before they ever got to Greensboro for the Labor Day Tournament. (Somewhere in there also picked up a game with Newberry College.) For the current season let's call it the last week in July to the last week in December... 5 months.

For many on the team the season probably seemed a little longer because of training for and participation in PDA Memorial Day, followed by prep and participation in Southern Regionals in June, followed by prep and participation in Seattle in July, followed by... see first paragraph.

I completely understand how the club 'season' is long. I guess my point is that adding in the friendly vs. a college program makes it 36 games in 5 months. Which comes to approx. 7 games per month. The other season I'm referencing had 30 games in less than 3 months. Which obviously is a little more than 10 games per month.

Were there any other games in June other than regionals? Were there any other games in July other than Seattle? Would that make 42 games in 7 months? I guess my point is that I heard all this talk about kids being forced to play in 3 leagues at the same time. The concern being that they were playing too much. I know you complimented coach Shelley above. Is it true that he accomodated players taking weekends/games off as well? It seems to me that the spring HS season is actually the season that puts too much stress on the body etc. with the number of games per month that the players are forced to play. I've also heard horror stories of the amount of 'fitness' (or punishment) that sometimes happens at a Tuesday 'practice' in between a Monday game and a Wednesday game. That can make for a long season.

I couldn't agree more. Of course, when I played I actually loved the game. I would have played 100 games per year if I had the opportunity. I didn't enjoy the games that we won 8-0 or more at my HS nearly as much as my club games, but I still loved to play. I can't believe some of the opportunities kids have these days. Events, facilities, exposure; I think they actually have it great.

Its not the amount of games required at club level. They could play all weekend every weekend if they wanted. Its the travel that wears you out. High School is very little travel. Much easier.Although the Viking Cup wears them out if they make it to the finals. Thats 5 games in three days.
I watched a few finals and they looked tuckered out.

Patriot, why do you and many others keep griping about the travel? That trip to Seattle we took resulted in my daughter getting full scholarship offers to UCLA, Southern Cal, Stanford, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State etc., etc., etc...

Waste of time? Waste of money? Naaaaaaahhhh.
