The answer is, arguably, yes. In years past in our state, many football coaches doubled as ADs, either to save the school district money, or (more often) to effectively overpay and retain coaches, whose "influence" often outstripped their interest in anything other than football.

Not surprisingly, when PE and Driver Ed teachers (and other faculty) were hired, the AD/FB Coach often insisted that the new hire double as an assistant coach. As a result, many "other" sports were coached by incompetents, volunteers, or WORSE, assistant football coaches who enhanced their salary packages by coaching spring sports they knew NOTHING and cared LESS about.

Thankfully, this is beginning to change. More and more big schools are creating a separate AD position, or designating an Assistant Principal/AD. I would still point out, however, that many high school FB teams have outrageously bloated staffs of 12-15 coordinators, assistants, trainers, etc. Next time you go to a football game, check the sideline. You'll be amazed.

Also, a handful of HS soccer programs in our state are similarly over-staffed. Whether taxpayers are getting bang for their buck -- same could be asked of players' parents, who often pay participation fees -- is subject to debate.

Not all coaches on a coaching staff are paid. Several are volunteer coaches that literally do it for free.

As for the other, I agree with much of what you said.

It's a tough one, for sure. And many staffs, in all sports (including football), include some volunteers. We know who THEY are, and we honor them.
But, as a coach yourself, do you really think a boys varsity soccer team needs more than a head coach and two assistants (volunteer or not) "working" the sidelines (and the officials) during a match?
If I were the SCHSL, I'd mandate that only two coaches can stand during a match, and that all staff be restricted to a technical area near midfield. Then, I'd put BOTH benches on the same side of the field, to simplify substitution and game management.

It doesnt seem to help some teams - they still cant beat Wando no matter how many coaches they have!

I agree with the restriction on standing. Just like club...which adheres to FIFA soccer rules
