A final shout out and congratulations to Mel Heinz as the final members of the inaugural team she brought together and put on the field 4 years ago at VSU have now graduated. Also to be congratulated is Rebecca Nolin, who took over head coaching responsibilities last Fall.
Over these first 4 years of the program Mel's inaugural team posted winning records every year, never finished below 3rd in conference standings, made 2 trips to conference tournament finals (yrs 1 and 4), and was selected 3 of 4 years to the NCAA post season tournament. In the last season under Coach Nolin, the team gave up no more than 2 goals in any game (never losing by more than 1), made its second to trip to the conference tournament finals winning 3-0, and after a close loss to Rollins in the NCAA tournament finished the year with a final national ranking at #23.
While I know the players would like to have achieved more (clearly many teams achieved as much or more during that period), they achieved more than most would expect of an inaugural program.
For what she established at VSU... congratulations Mel.
