Mann is a magnet school so they can bring outside students. This use to be a good recruiting tool that was abused so now the school board decides who is eligible instead of faculty. I would rather be a non-magnet. Non magnets are allowed certain amount of students outside the zone. There are handful of neighborhoods in the Greenville area that are soccer heavy. 5 years ago they rezoned the area and Mann ended up with those neighborhoods. These areas were zoned for riverside and Mauldin. Sucks for them.
Christ Church and St Joes take the other great soccer players. But soccer doesn't seem to be determined by size of school. Wando was just better this year (and previous years.) If you want to be the man ;you've got to beat the man.

By the way school board. When you call some school a magnet the area of expertise should be strong. Ours is math and science. Now find some decent teachers for these courses unless magnet means drawing good people away.

Hey passingthetime, maybe Wando has better teachers.

My prediction failed at the High School level.
I just feel sorry for the other players of Wando because of how your center d takes control of the other players. She has been doing that since she was 10 years old. Also, didn't she get hurt early during the Lexington game? That is the 1 that Wando lost correct. The rest of the team doesn't get to showcase there abilities as much. You do have some great other players who are held back.
As for year vs. year u14, u15, u16, etc, The ECNL girls have came out on top more often. Back then it was state cup. The problem in the upstate is that the schools are a lot smaller and the qirls while they are just as good as Wando, they are just split between many teams. NO offense meant. See you next year. I did leave out the numbers. NO sense calling players out who really don't care what we adults think.

You obviously have no clue about the kids that play for Wando. This team defeated Hilton Head (#3A); Academic Magnet (#1 1 and 2 A) late in the season and Dutch Fork (Top 5 in State); South Aiken (Top 10 in State); Lexington (Top 5 in State); and Mann (#1) in the playoffs. They were predicted by everyone to lose each of those matches.

They made the playoff run while having 3 Players out for all Playoff games (2 Starters); and losing 2 or 3 to injury during the playoff matches. Their were 6 out for the Finals and lost one early in the 2nd half. To state that one player dominated the matches to a point it is unfair to other players shows your ignorance of this team. She may be special but no more than special players on many other teams.

Every Wando Player put just as much time and effort into this season as every other player in the state. They struggled most of the season but came together as a TEAM late in the season.

If they had played their playoff matches like their mid season form they would have lost to Dutch Fork.

If numbers are such an advantage, how does Academic Magnet field such a fine dominant team? How about Riverside when at AA; then AAA and finally AAAA?

The fact is that Wando had their most difficult run through the playoffs in the past 5 years and were not as talented as past teams. Pat the Players on the back for their hard work and putting it all together at the right time. They beat a bunch of good teams. That is exactly what happened to Hanna Last season.

So please try to remember this is a game for the kids and not adults trying to rationalize a defeat they had nothing to do with other than root for their player.

Wow Wando struggled all the way to a 20-1-1 record?? And only allowed 6 goals ALL season???

Not sure how the term struggle fits into beating every team you faced but one and allowing 6 total goals. Seriously.... you had 17 shut outs... you struggled?? Cry me a freaking river... (FYI only 6 out teams in the state had 17 wins let alone 17 shut outs)

And a difficult run through the playoffs??? Seriously?? This is a parody post right??? JL Mann had a difficult run winning 3 of its games by 1 goal and only out scoring its playoff opponents 8-3 vs Wando's 16-0 (not counting state championship) Struggling is JL Mann taking 76 minutes to score the winning goal against Ft Mill.

And you had 3 players out for the playoffs and 6 out for the finals including 2 starters??

You realize that if most teams had 2 starters out they'd be done?? Because most teams don't come from a school 3300 with students to pick from. Instead schools like JL Mann have HALF as many students.

The biggest weakness on the girls side is depth, you see it on every team. How many times have you seen a game be 1-0 at half time and then 6-0 by the end of the game as the weaker team wears out and doesn't have anyone on the bench to replace the starters??

How many quality subs does a team like JL Mann or Riverside have?? I know Fort Mill had about 5 decent subs and if your 16th best field players is on the field against a good team you are in trouble. (Honestly if you have more than 2 subs on the field at one time you are trouble on most teams.)

Simple question: How many girls tried out for soccer at Wando this year?? How many were turned away from playing on either Varsity or JV??

I know at Fort Mill that we had 4 EIGHT graders on our JV teams because we didn't have enough high schoolers to fill the team. And everyone who tires out makes the team.

Finally, no one has ever said anything bad about the girls. No doubt they practice and work just as hard as the girls at any other top school. But for a parent to pretend being DOUBLE the size of the schools they are competing against has nothing to do with them winning year after year is ignorance.

BTW private schools like AM and St Joe's are a totally different ball game than the public school and their success despite small sizes is a very different thing than the biggest school in the state winning year after year. Cut your team in half and how many state championships would you be winning?

And if you want to see real struggle then look at TL Hanna.

From State Champions last year to not even winning their region this year and losing in the quarter finals.

Or Ft Mill two years ago going from Upper state champions at 3a to losing in the 2nd round of the playoffs the next year.

That is realty for most girls soccer teams. You get a group of 5-6 players together and make a run at it during their senior year and after they graduate you need a year or two to rebuild.

That is why four different teams have won the Upper State Championship in the past four years. For JL Mann even making it to the Upper State Championship next year will be an accomplishment.

Once again you do. not understand. Size does not matter. It is how The team jells. I have seen much more talented Wando teams not win because they Did not come together as a team. The 2013 squad did.

You are a stats reader and did not see the matches. The playoff matches other than the first round could have gone either way. They scored with 5 secs left against Dutch Fork. Wando managed to hang on, score goals and keep The ball out of the opponents net. Not just one special Player put them over the hump.

The first Academic Magnet match went to PKs. As to tryouts, their are 8th graders on JV just like most schools.

Please quit seeking excuses for losses and recognize that this year in particular there were 4 or 5 teams with legitimate claims as favorite to Win. Wando just happened to come out on top. It was Hanna's time last year and Mauldin in 2010.

Amen bud......but don't think your rational about teams gelling at the right time is going to change a person's mind like the one to which you are responding. Someone that has convinced themselves they can never win because of enrollment is never going to see the light. Just know that being right is good enough.

Please.... don't tell me that size doesn't matter.

The biggest school in the state just happens to have been in 7 straight State Championships...

What would happen if we combined JL Mann and River into one school??? They would still be smaller than Wando.
Or say Fort Mill and NationsFord?

Enrollment for the top girls soccer programs in the state
1. Wando 3383
2. JL Mann 1649
3. Riverside 1595
4. Blythewood 2076
5. Lexington 2855
6. South Aiken 1516
7. Dutch Fork 2048
8. TL Hanna 1789
9. Northwestern 1734
10. Mauldin 2124
11. Fort Mill 1510
12. Spring Valley 2070

So other than Lexington you are 1000 students bigger than any other school and you are twice the size of half the schools on the list. That means you have twice as many students who might player soccer. Twice as many who might show up at try outs. Twice as many that might play club.

I ask again, what would happen if your team was split in half??
