Actually, FM outshot Mauldin by a significant margin. Mauldin also had 5 corners to 2 for FM. They also had multiple penalty shots. They had their chances. FM had to make theirs. Mauldin shot well, with all but one resulting in saves. FM missed several; I suspect their keeper said "whew" after a few of the close ones. Nbr 12; read the Herald article for facts. Every position on both sides played hard and played well. Thanks, girls! It was great to watch! PS. FM is now 9th nationally. That reflects well on ALL SC soccer. The season is Friday; GO JACKETS!

Mauldin was given more chances in the second half, and shots favored them 7-5 in the second frame. FM had the majority of possession in the first half, however, and overall shots favored the Lady Jackets 15-11. The FM defensive line made the difference in the second half.

Good win for the Lady Jackets, West Ashley has had the benefit of playing in a lot of one-goal games recently, we needed this one.

Mauldin was very good all game, tremendous in the second half. Although they were only dangerous maybe once from the run-of-play, every free kick and every corner kick was trouble waiting to happen. The FM goalkeeper was tested and looked confident, probably playing her best game of the season.

FM goal was very nice as the freshman struck once again. The Lady Jackets played very well in the first half, but the 1-0 lead proved to be not comfortable enough. It would have been nice to have had one more, but a Mauldin defender did very well in one sequence, taking two balls of the line on consecutive shots.

Halftime was interesting as the referee told the FM coach and AD that the second half would be delayed at least another 30 minutes while they waited for lightning to pass. I wasn't privy to the conversation the ref had with the Mauldin coach but I assume he told her the same thing. FM headed up toward the locker room while Mauldin remained on the field for the 45-minute duration and warmed up. Smart move by the Lady Mavs coach and it paid off in the second half. Her team had much more energy and applied a lot of pressure.

Hurst, how about all those penalty calls? Think they held FM in check the second half just a wee bit more than Mauldin staying out in the rain? I didn't see the "more energy". FM must have done OK in the second....shutout, right? That doesn't happen against a team as good as Mauldin unless you're taking it to 'em! I'd like to hear how a real authority felt about the game...Mauldin coach available for comment??

Here is an excerpt of what a Mauldin player had to say, courtesy The Greenville News:

"The second half, when we came back out we were like, 'Well, they made us wait forever, let's just punish them, and let's take it to them,' and that's what we did," Borkey said.

The article adds (not annotated as a quote in the article), "During halftime, Mauldin stayed on the field and warmed up, while Fort Mill stayed in the locker room. The Mavericks were not happy with the delay, and they felt that Fort Mill was responsible."

Now, here is what was reported in today's Charlotte Observer about last night's storm which was right on the edge of FM. Does Mauldin REALLY think Fort Mill was controlling the weather during half-time?

"Wayne Jones of the National Weather Service's office in Greer, S.C., said forecasters still aren't certain how much rain fell Tuesday evening in southeast Mecklenburg County, which received the brunt of the storm.

"The hail that fell during the storm contaminated the radar returns," Jones said. "That made it difficult for us to do an estimate."

But forecasters suspect at least 2 inches of rain fell during a two-hour period between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.

Jones also said the weather service received several reports of large hail, mostly along the N.C. 51 corridor between Matthews and Pineville. Winds gusted to about 50 mph, but there was no widespread wind damage.

The biggest problem came from the lightning and the heavy rain."

Well that is a typical comment by the losing team, blame it on the weather. Not their lack of ability to finish the ball, or the beautiful job FM defense did of clearing the ball. Its not difficult to control the second half, when the refs gave you at least 10 penelty kicks from within 50 yards of the goal, and you place the ball in front of FM's goal the entire second half. Great job FM girls and thanks to the support of everyone who came out last night. Horribly referred game, and i wish someone from mauldin would admit that please.

South Meck's first round playoff game last night, scheduled to be played right across the border, was postponed. The ref told me that they waited 45 minutes, observed the lightning, took their check, and went home. The girls never even warmed up.

The officials at the Fort Mill-Mauldin game did a nice job waiting it out. There was no way that Mauldin was going to step off that field and run the risk of that game getting called after 40 minutes. Not being down 0-1. I'm sure they figured, "we played the first 40 minutes through flashes of distant lightning, we'll play the last 40 under the same conditions as well".

I stand corrected.
