I am interested in the rec league structure of some of the bigger clubs in the state. Our club runs two rec league seasons per year, fall and spring. The fall season ends with a tournament for the U-10, U-12 and U-14 divisions, with trophies for the winners. The spring season just ends with the last week of regular season play, and the winners are based on season records.

Most other sports have an “all-star” event after the regular season. This happens in almost every Little League baseball league, football, basketball, etc. But yet, I have never heard of this in recreational league youth soccer. I looked through the SCYSA rules for rec league teams and players, and (as usual) the rules aren’t clear enough for me to determine if we could even do something like this. Officially, rec league teams are to be open to all players. An All-Star team would be by invitation only, and thus closer to a Classic team, but that term doesn’t exist at the lower age groups.

I think that an “All Star” competition at the end of a season would be good recognition for the better players, and a decent way to introduce the prospective future classic players to a higher level of play.

Do any of the other clubs do something similar?

i think that would be a great idea, it would be a great experience for the players, and give others something to work toward!!!

I know several clubs take rec/LSYSA teams will 'cherry pick' teams to take to tournaments. I know the club I coach for asks coaches for personal evaluations of their players and from the evaluations, invitations are extended to the players to attend a couple of practices and then the tournament for the 'Academy' or 'A' team. Other than that, except for the most basic rec level of our club, we don't do all-star.
