IMHO...as a person who decidedly wants Lexington to do well... - Dorman is the best 4-A team in the state until someone proves otherwise on the field.
- The Dorman coach seems to be a good coach; it's difficult to argue with the results.
- If I had to play Lexington, I'd do exactly what I've heard Dorman's coach did -- and other coaches are trying to do. Play a defensive oriented game, mark certain players, and count on Lexington carrying the ball too much rather than working more as a team. I wouldn't just hope to score in PK's, I'd hope to score on a counter as well. However, last week Lexington went from a D to a B+ or better in their execution of set plays; if the team also continues to work and improve with respect to playing simply with quick passes to open players then they'll give the best teams in the state fits, regardless of the other team's defensive strategies.

deahler, Are you really implying that soccer is the only sport in which one person steps up to the line and feels the pressure of the team on his or her shoulders? What about a freethrow at the buzzer? There is definitely a rush when a goal is scored in pk's, but there's also a rush when a keeper makes an unbelievable save. I guess it just depends on which side you're on. Hurst, In normal run of play-harder to score, in pk's harder to deny-I guess the advantage is reversed to some degree-but that's the point of penalty kicks-right?

But lets get back on track to Dorman. Do yall not agree that Dorman has some of the smartest players on the field. I compare Dormans stratagy to that of a baseball teams of what is referred to as "small ball". If smarts is what wins championships, which it does in all sports, then i can see Dorman cruising to the AAAA state title game. Dorman has a good backfield, with Zongrone, and the mid field is summed up with one name: Emplit, and Walker has great speed up front, and not to mention a pretty darn good goalie in Robinson. So this "small ball" stratagy will work for Dorman as it already has agaisnt Lex.

Whoa........ Seems my post got some fiery feedback..... I honestly never meant to take credit away from Dorman with the Eastside comment. I just wanted to answer Hurst's question about anyone going up 1-0 on Dorman... didn't mean to spark a fight! And to MASH: maybe the Viking Cup would have turned out differently if Eastside had "packed it in" on Riverside! Guess we'll never know......

I agree with Deahler there is no other sport where a CHAMPION is decided by a one on one do or die shot.
Glimmertwin - i have never seen a basketball game go in to OT and 5 players from each team go to the line to shoot one freethrow each to decide the game. If there has been a game where the result rested on a critical freethrow during the game or very close to the end like that (which i dont doubt) then it was a very very rare occurance.
The fact of the matter is NO one i mean NO one likes to lose in PK's after playing 90min (or however long) of good solid soccer. If you are on the other side and just won the game your happy that you won but in my view you did not beat the team straight up. Either way i think PK's are a part to the game so until that changes we all will have to deal with them win or lose!
To play the game is good, to win the game is great, to LOVE the game is the greatest!

I will put my input on the PK situation. PKs are what make soccer different from any sport. In basketball, the odds of a game being tied after 2 overtime periods are not very good at all. PKs make soccer a little more exciting, in a country that barely cares bout it. Any sports fan, even if they hate soccer, will watch PKs just because its different and exciting. PKs are prob one of the more unique aspects of soccer.

Dorman is good team who beat a good lexington team in PK's but don't forget that Lexington was sitting Kira Cambell and Alicia Keel a huge part of their offense. If or should I say when they see each other in the playoffs, PK's will not be necessary.

No! What makes you think that? However, I am implying that your analogies are terrible. Like this one below.
Quote:
What about a freethrow at the buzzer?
I would say that a foul called at the end of a basketball game which results in your "freethrow (sp?) at the buzzer", would be analogous to a PK being called at the end of regulation in a soccer match. I have never seen a basketball referee blow his whistle at the end of the second overtime and say, "OK, enough we're all getting pretty tired here. Let's just shoot some free throws to decide this one."
Actually, my favorite argument for PK's is JMCLEMSON's above. I am not sure I agree, but it is a great way to look at it.
Why has no one commented on my alternating corner kicks idea?
JM,
In keeping with the original intent of your post - I agree that Dorman is for real. They have proven it! Basically, I echo what Chico has already posted.

>>[JMCLEMSON] Do yall not agree that Dorman has some of the smartest players on the field.<<You're going to have to post SAT scores to get a lot of agreement on this board. >>If smarts is what wins championships, which it does in all sports, then i can see Dorman cruising to the AAAA state title game.<<I'd like at this moment to begin a new category for SCScoccer.com awards. I think I'll call it the "Karma...I don't need no stinkin' Karma!" award. There's no doubt that some Fort Mill parents took the award home last year, despite valiant efforts by Hurst66 to balance the universe in the other direction. JMCLEMSON -- you've got the lead now -- don't blow it -- tell us some more about Dorman cruising to a state championship through that weak field that is the upstate based on their superior intelligence and superhuman genetic qualities. >>Dorman has a good backfield...<<Zongrone is a very good player.
