I used to help out with the spring Mt. Pleasant Piggly Wiggly tournament. Back in the day, it was totally a rec tournament & we would use quite a few young referees. In order to help with their development, for several years we contracted to have a ref assessor come out and do as many assessments as he could cram into a weekend. (This was not an inexpensive thing....I seem to remember it costing $500+). The refs wouldn't know they were being assessed so there wasn't any extra pressure on them, the assessor just blended in with the parents on the sidelines. My son got assessed 3 times at that tournament over the years and I have to think it helped.

What a great idea! There should be a way for refs to get useful advice and constructive criticism instead of complaints from parents, coaches, or players. I like the "hidden shopper" approach, because it removes the element of self-consciousness from the evaluation.

I should have said "could be possible". Just trying to offer a possible background insight with regards to W2G's question. He/she got jumped on pretty quick simply because they asked for clarification. The league I was referring to does not use ref crews (parents are most often used as linesmen) and the ref "certifications" only apply to their own group. A full ref crew wearing matching uniforms is almost unheard of.

I was at a game last night and the ref had a black shirt with red trim. After the game I asked him what the red trim signified. He told me he was a "first degree black shirt" ref.
Way2go you might be onto something.
I would say that ref had a sense of Humor...

I learned something. I thought when they had the black shirt on it meant the red shirt was dirty.

The reason I wear the various ref colors is because in 5 yrs I have never washed any of my shirts. This is a great way to keep the coaches and players at bay.
It also agitates the fans so much that they are more worried about getting too close to you, and whining and screaming about all the missed calls.

REFEREES HAVE 4 COLORS AVAILABLE WITH A 5TH BEING ADDING THIS YEAR.
GOLD, RED, BLACK, BLUE, AND NOW GREEN.
THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT BOTH TEAMS, BOTH KEEPERS, AND THE OFFICIALS SHOULD ALL HAVE ON COLORS THAT CONTRAST FROM THE OTHERS. THEREFORE, BY RULE, YOU SHOULD HAVE 5 CONTRASTING COLORS AT EACH MATCH. GOLD IS THE MOST USED DUE TO THE FACT THAT MANY TEAMS DO NOT WEAR GOLD AND ITS THE FIRST UNIFORM PURCHASED. EACH COST $50 A PIECE AND A SET OF 10 JERSEYS, BOTH LONG AND SHORT IS ROUGHLY $500. THEN ADD THE OTHER STUFF AND YOU SHOULD HAVE ABOUT $1200 WORTH OF GEAR BY THE TIME YOU ARE DONE.
BADGES ARE THE WAY TO TELL HOW MUCH TRAINING A REFEREE HAS. A BLUE BADGE SIGNIFIES A ROOKIE, OR LEAST EXPERIENCED REFEREE, AND A BLACK BADGE WITHOUT GRADE IS LABELED AN 08 GRADE. EVERYONE CAN GET AN 08 BADGE. FROM THERE IS CLIMBS 07. 06, 05, 04, 03, 02, 01. SEVENS ON DOWN RECEIVE MUCH MORE TRAINING AND ASSESSMENTS. TO EARN 07 OR HIGHER YOU MUST EARN IT. ANYONE CAN WEAR AN 08 WITH LITTLE OVERSITE.

ANOTHER POINT.
90% OF OFFICIALS ARE GRADE 08. THE REASON BEING IS THAT THE COST AND TIME OF OBTAINING HIGHER GRADES IS SOMETHING THAT MANY OFFICIALS DO NOT CARE TO ATTEMPT AND ARE HAPPY WITH THE 08 BADGE. BELOW IS AN OUTLINE OF THE GRADES.
9 - United States Soccer Federation Recreational Referee
A. Minimum Age: None
B. Badge: USSF Recreational Referee, with current year
C. Authorized Assignment Level: Referee on recreational youth games U-14 and younger
only and assistant referee on any game U-14 or below
8 - United States Soccer Federation Referee
A. Minimum Age: None
B. Badge: USSF Referee, with current year
C. Recommended Assignment Level: All youth games, assistant referee in comparable
games
7 - United States Soccer Federation Referee
A. Minimum Age: 17

The United States Soccer Federation grade and title of an official will be determined solely by the
standards and examinations issued by the U.S. Soccer Referee Committee and the United States
Soccer Federation Board of Directors. Annual re-examination is required.
A referee must officiate at the next - higher level to accumulate experience to be certified
competent at that level. Assignors must exercise care to increase the difficulty level of the game
assignments in a gradual and orderly manner for the good of the official and of the players.
*International Assistant Referees must wear USSF National Referee badge when assigned as referee
in matches.
