Consider perhaps that W2G may be new to SCYSA or the SCHSL. There is a pretty active soccer league in their area that is not USYSA affiliated. Perhaps that league uses shirt color rather than badge color to signify ref level. Would make sense.
If nothing else, almost everyone now-a-days buys their yellow shirt first. Only the "old-timers" are sure to be carrying their black ones (or resistant to buying those new brightly colored ones), so the correlation does hold at least a little-bit of truth to it?.
