Coaches voting.....but cannot vote for one of your own players.

Interesting.

I'm not sure enough coaches in a lot of regions even pay attention to the players on the other teams.

Therein lies the problem.

At the end of the year, I would dread one more meeting with all the other coaches driving to some remote place to argue with teams of all classifications over the top players...having just participated in near identical All Region, North South, and Clash of the Carolina's meetings.

If it's that much of a bother, then why do it at all? My daughter fell into a similar situation her junior year when they won state, the coach gave the 'all-star' girls the all-star awards and deservedly so, but there was certainly no spreading the wealth.

Of course, the next year the team barely finished third in that same region and got knocked out of the second round of the playoffs and in large part it was because they didn't have those 'all-stars'.

With that being said, I believe the most-deserving should get the awards. Other players have 'team awards' that they can earn if you want to spread the wealth.

Jr,

Do the coaches from your region actually meet to discuss All-Region? Do you have the ability to trumpet the cause of a player on another team?

I'm not sure that's the case with all regions in the state. I have a feeling that spots are allotted based on how a team finishes in the region standings. Then, it is solely up to the coach on who represents their school on the all-region team.

I've experienced it both via coaches voting (cannot vote for your own) as well as allotted spots based on finish. I prefer the latter.

I agree. That's how we do it in region 7-AAAA; each team has a number of slots based on region finish, and the coach fills the alloted slots with the players from his team he considers most deserving. I like this better for two reasons:

1. As was mentioned, sometimes coaches don't pay that much attention to individual players on the other region teams.

2. It makes sure that hard-working players from EVERY team are recognized. I seem to remember reading one all-region list where the entire team was from one school...not very sporting to the other teams' players who may have worked very hard for what they got.

Oh, and:

3. Since the number of slots is based on region finish, it still allows more players from higher-achieving teams to get recognition.

Chass,

"Hard-working" is at the coach's discretion. As Marcus mentioned, it doesn't prevent the coach from keeping his or her best player off of the all-region team.

I don't know what the best solution is here.

Very true...the disadvantage is that it leaves the recognition of a player entirely at the discretion of a single coach--their own. Unfortunately, I realize that there are some cases where some type of personal issue could cause a player to get left out. I guess we can just only hope that coaches would want to give recognition to the players who are most deserving, not just "favorites."

A lot of it is subjective, too...sometimes a coach may see things that others don't. For example, a player might show good individual skills on the field but may not be "coachable" to work with others...which might be a big factor in her success at the next level. "Deserving" really is open to a lot of interpretation...and I don't think there will ever be a solution that will satisfy everyone.

ive known the player in question for RH since she was knee high and she is about 6 foot know. great kid on and off the field. i think what has happened here is the perfect example of the differences in school programs across the state.some are still social clubs and others are competetive programs or ones moving that way.these social clubs may be the ones causing the "bad habits" on the field.

I perfert the total SOF, (shots on frame), + goals, minus red cards -3, yellow -2, fouls -1, + assists + injuries system, + defensive stops divided by headers missed system.

Our coach chooses all-region players by just their region performances. Same thing for all-area against teams we play from Greenville. Whenever we play in a tournament it's just those games applied to all-tournament. All-State is for the best players and they might not have been selected for the other teams. You might say a "natural selection" type of way to filter the players recognition.

Farkas, do you factor in number of gray hairs given to the coach over the course of the season?
