Perfect world secenario, we would all make what we should. Real world scenario we make what we do. There are no locks on the gates and this is still America we can find other jobs or sports.
One rule that I heard as a young man and learned as I got older is, "that in a free market no one is over or under paid". I also understand that schools are tax supported and that leads to a completely new topic.
I will say that paying people for the fine work they do is a wonderful idea. But is the well of cash that deep?
I don't often use this forum to talk about myself but I will say with what I have been paid over the last five years (talking double figures) I'm still a volunteer. I would, if need be, pay for the opportunities that I have been given at Berkeley. I often say and feel that I am overpaid. The reward of working with this new generation of young people is priceless to me.
